You used to be able to fight him with no fighters at all, negating the curse.  Now you have to use fighters.

I removed the item from my inventory, and even muted the item, and still got the illusion.   It didn't go away until the last game update.

You never actually get an ability that lets you use it, you get the illusion from a step in the quest by clicking on an object, and no, you can't go back and get the illusion again.

I still think it's ridiculous to dramatically change the encounter after letting people kill him so many times before the encounter change.  It makes getting the drops for some 10x more difficult...

You just need gear/and/or proper group setup for necros to do good dps.  The necromancer in my guild is pretty consistantly in the top 5 of the parse.And those hearts really do help.
