I use both.  I am currently only lvl 24 but I do a lot of PvE, PvP both solo and in groups.  Generally I will wonder around and start fights with 1-hand and shield with a defense stance.  This is mainly so I can use shield slam to keep them stunned or to catch someone running by.  Also just incase I am attacking a bait I get some defense for the surprise attackers.  Once I get their health close to half way I switch to a high damage 2-hand and switch to offence stance, decree of dacay to drop their resist and hit them with a HT.Remember in the middle of combat you can go from 1-hand/shield to 2-hand on the fly but not the other way around.  So if you got a lot of health and need the finishing damage so they don't run away on you switch to the 2-hand.As for PvE it really is situational on which way I go.  I kill mobs fast with 2-hand but I can tank better with shield.  So depending on my role and how good my healer his depends on which I play.  I set up a tool bar that allows me to change my equipments and stance on the fly so I am always switching around on the situation.

Depends on what you are soloing, even con no arrow and under use 2 h in offence
Anything tougher I usually go def stance and 1hW shield
Named and ^^^ definately 1h and shield in Def stance

only got to 34 but:

I always us a shield and 1h in pvp, shield bash is too useful for stopping runners and getting [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn]ing mezed, and the extra defenses always niceequal pve 2h offensive

new instance 1h+shield - defensive

scarier than a green ^^ i usually equip the shield, if I don't my friend who plays a fury normally polietly reminds me by saying something subtle like "for [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn]s sake your health is going down quick" - but only because he is lazy

I had used a 2H up until 20-22. I then went to 1H w/ shield. I only solo, but found I am more effective with the 1H/shield. Maybe someday I will be smart enough to put the Defensive Stance on!! Hahahaha!

Level 70 SK here. I've experimented with this quite a lot. Taking on very tough mobs, seeing which way worked better. Sometimes I'd take on the same mob that killed me over and over till I figured out how to solo it. I can definetly state you can take on a much tougher mob solo with a shield in defensive stance.

Oh, and if I'm soloing easy mobs sometimes I do go offensive stance with a 1h axe and symbol for smite. You can shield bash with a symbol.

I personally go 1H and shield and defensive stance when I solo. Then again, I solo ^^^ when I do for xp purposes or I'm soloing 3 different groups for t7 writs so I need the extra protection. Anything else, especially if it's not ^^^ or named, I go 2H and offense.

I find that I have the best survivability when, for:Single encounters (one monster at a time, ^ or easier: One hander + shield, offensive stanceSingle encounters (^^^): One hander + shield, defensive stanceMultiple encounters (2 or more at a time, any difficulty): One hander + shield, defensive stanceAlways be sure to use your dumbire pet. It makes a WORLD of difference. The only time I ever use a two hander is when I am not the main tank in the group. Mobs tend to tear me up pretty bad when I go two hander in soloing because it drops my avoidence a good 15% to 20%, and the shield provides extra stats to help me survive. And seeing that almost all of your DPS comes from intelligence, that two-hander of yours only increases your DPS marginally. It's the offensive stance that gives you the true DPS boost, since it increases your INT a good amount.I have no PvP experience with a Shadowknight as I hate PvP, so I cannot help you there. :smileytongue:
