Hello, I recently logged in for the first time in a few years. I had payed for and activated everything up to (and including) The Shadow Oddysey. I remember having a house full of stuff. I had a genie lamp, there were creatures walking around, I had bought items with in-game currency, I had items from quest rewards... I remember there being an option to pack up belongings into a container for ease of moving, but I don't see that option anywhere now and I certainly have no clue where my housing was before. What do I do and how do I recover my items?

Also, I have red text on my screen that says my inventory is overflowing, but I opened my bags and there are many empty slots in my bags.

There was a Freeport revamp so your house door may have moved to another location. Someone more familiar with Freeport housing could try and point you to the right location. You can ask in game.  You can find out what your house address is by clicking on the Housing tab after openening the Character window.

With one of the game updates last year all gear was reset and put into your overflow inventory if you didn't have bag space. At the character window any overflowing inventory will be in a box by your character feet. Drag and move the items into your bags.

Ok, I think I figured it out, thanks. Luckily, I had some junk loot left over in my bags that I could merch and pay my upkeep. What's the deal with gear not being unlocked? I gather that in order to unlock it, one would have to purchase unlock kits from the shop, but what gear gets locked and what gear does not? Any other quirks I should know about?

Sounds like you have a silver membership which will let you play the game for free with limits of course.  You can upgrade to gold for the $15 per month and not be limited in characters/gear etc. You might want to check out some existing threads on silver accounts for more info.
