The external chat server isn't able to authenticate users via userid/password over SSL or using station SSID.

i've been getting this for last couple weeks now, and randomly it'll work.  not sure what the issue is.  i've tried clearing cookies and all that nifty stuff, 3 different browsers(IE, firefox, and chrome).  all to no avail.

They're changing the feeds that support EQ2players to a new server, that might be part of why it's not working. I've pretty much given up hope of seeing anything on EQ2Players fixed until they make that change, and only time will tell how well they support it after that.

The upside might be that supposedly the data is going to be accessable via API, meaning if EQ2players continues to receive poor support a better site might appear in it's place run by someone non-SOE.

Is someone looking into this? I hope so, I feel very out of touch with the majority of my guildies that I don't see during the day.

The status update you seek has already been given in the form of a silent answer. This broke three weeks ago, and no one has given it a second thought. At this point, they're waiting for their user base to stop caring so they can remove it entirely -- it's a "bonus" feature that they're not obligated to offer. Reasoning given for the removal will likely be along the lines of it being "too complicated" or "too time-consuming" to fix (read: not profitable enough). Just the usual sloppy work from the entire organization, nothing new to see here... please keep all arms and legs inside for the next train-wreck we'll be guided into...

I understand what you're saying, but considering we pay an extra fee per month to use it, they kind of are obligated to provide what we're paying for....unless they plan on issuing refunds, which I severely doubt.

You haven't paid an extra fee to use it for a long time now. All EQ2players features were made free a ways back, well over a year ago I'd say.

They gutted the paid services on December 17, 2009 - less than a year ago. Although getting close to a year.

Guild Chat (among many of the other paid features) didn't work reliably when it was a paid feature, and it recieved the same amount of attention and support. Which is to say, nearly none at all. Some people were never able to use it under any circumstances.

I wouldn't hold much hope of them fixing this. It was an oddball Joomla implementation to begin with.

The new data server that was talked about at FF was for game server data - player and item information, they didn't speak to whether guild chat would similiarly be overhauled, and I didn't think to ask. Since the "new" Launcher still is kind of hidden in beta, and it itself has an oddball chat implementation, I haven't seen any indication they're moving towards a new implementation.

It's possible, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath.

Seriously, this has been broken for weeks without a word on when or if its going to be fixed. If they are not going to fix it they need to at least say it

The Station forums have a post that indicates chat changes may be happening alongside the new data server.  The post is regarding Station Launcher chat but DanKinney mentions "build[ing] a new bridge to each of the other chat systems".

I might buy that except for two facts -

1) Professionals don't develop / migrate against a live system, and those brave souls who do, don't without announcing downtime.

2) The server is up and running - you can connect via the standard XMPP connection negotiation, you just can't authenticate.

It's broken.

Agreed.  More likely they are planning to replace the current system and are just leaving our broken one as is till they replace everything (which is looking more and more like a site revamp *sigh*).

Slow and steady wins the race, right?

A key prerequisite for this is to get way more information from the game team about your characters.  We finally have that system in place and are starting to get character information from EverQuest II (and Extended).

This quote is what leads me to believe that this is all being parceled together with the new game data feeds they were talking about at Fan Faire.  Pair this quote with the Fan Faire discussion with the complete silence and lack of even acknowledging the broken state of the website and it matches the previous pre-"revamp" states we've gone through before they release another overly flawed and poorly QA'd site.

Hopefully, I'm proved wrong about either a new site or its lack of quality.

Update: The server is up at the moment using userid/password authentication over SSL.

SSID token authentication (which the web based chat relies on) still seems buggered.

Super.  Switched from SSID authentication to username/password in my Android app and now chat is up and running again.

Edit: Correction, it seems to be up and down like a yo-yo at the moment.  Getting authentication errors 3 times out of 4 at least.

I'd love info on how to switch to SSL also.  Internet is out at home for the next few weeks, so the only way I can stay in touch with my guild is through chat with guild at work.

If you're using the web based chat client, you're stuck until they get token based authentication up and running, that's the only authentication system implemented for that.
