I regularly play in a level-locked trio and was wondering if we could handle some (or all) of the TSO instances. We are not raid-geared but have mostly MC/Expert gear and know how to play our trio very well. Actually, we have multiple trios so if one class combination is not sufficient for a given challenge we can swap-out a character and re-balance the team so assume that we have a good class combo.

The TSO instances scale to 90 now, so no you probably won't be able to trio them unless you get a lower-level character to start the instance 8-9 levels below you.

I know some TSO stuff has been soloable / duoable for a while but the people doing it were normally in raid gear. The stuff  that springs to minds that is easily trioable is OoA, AoB, Deep Forge. The others are probably do-able depending on skill level and how well you know the zone. (i.e NHT and the valves could be a problem for just 3 players, as could the scroll burning in Crucible etc)

I'd suggest giving it a whirl.. not sure what level you are but also remember that if you all hit 90, you can mentor to 80 and go into an instance and then unmentor and finish them at 90 (this ISN'T greying the zone out, it'll be green and therefore you aren't "trivialising" the zone / automatically mentored)

Only the instances that scale, scale to 90.  OoA for instance is super easy, but it doesn't give a mark only the shard at the end.

btw its not hard to trio the shard zones now, i duo them with a fury friend now, we have the same combined dps of a avarage grp so mobs go down easy and we both have tank specs (im a warlock) which still doesnt affect my dps to much, so i would say that trio is quite easy to do now. btw me and my fury friend do Guk:OS/LC Cruc/Scion/Ana /DF/NHT/AOB/OOA without any problems.
