I have a computer with the following specifications:

Windows 7 64-bit (clean install)

Core 2 Duo 6600 (2.4Ghz)

Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS

4GB of RAM

When playing EQ2 I get horrible FPS on Balanced or High Performance (around 5-10 FPS when moving). Even if I put the settings down to Extreme Performance I only get around 25 FPS. No matter what I do I also get a 'slideshow' effect where the game pauses slightly every bit then keeps going.

I've tried noodling with the settings a lot (but as above even everything at minimum with extreme performance doesn't get me to a very playable FPS all things considered). I read that the latest Nvidia drivers weren't OK to use so tried downgrading to 186 but this didn't change my FPS at all.

My computer is a clean install of EQ2 and Windows - the only other thing running is Antivirus which has an exclusion for the EQ2 directory (I've tried uninstalling my antivirus and seeing if that changed anything and it didn't, however).

Does anyone have any guidance as to what I can do to make my computer play EQ2 at a decent framerate? With my exact computer (except using Vista 32-bit and whatever drivers, etc were in existence like 2 years ago) I ran very smoothly on High Performance with shadows turned off without any issues so something wacky is going on.

Greetings,

Please open the options menu for the game.  In the display section under performance there will be a 'reuse vertex buffers' checkbox.  That feature was designed to correct the stuttering problem that can occur with the 8800 card you're using.  Try turning that option on and let us know if that has any effect on the problem.

Thanks very much for the response.

Checking that box did help with the stuttering significantly, which is awesome, but sadly I'm still getting 10-15 fps when not moving with dips down to 0-5 when moving even on 'very high performance'. I've gone through all the tweaking guides and nothing seems to change my fps very much but other games with similar or above computer requirements run fine at much higher detail levels.

Any idea what else I can try?

I have a Q6600 and since EQ2 only really uses one core, you will prob have to OC your CPU for better performance in EQ2. My Q6600 was running at default and i had the same lag (which is funny because i can play BFBC2 on high settings np) then i overclocked to 3.06ghz and it helped a lot. Unfortunatly almost the entire game runs on a single core, leaving your other cores and GFX card hardly used.

Thanks for the idea - I was looking into overclocking my processor and noticed that in CPU-Z it was reading as a 1.6Ghz processor on both cores. I googled around and found that if you have c1e (a cpu power management thing) enabled in the BIOS that it will essentially kneecap your processor. I turned it off and my FPS went up to 40-50 on balanced in most areas. I might try overclocking it above 3 Ghz later on but for now I'll just enjoy a normal experience.

Thanks for the help!

Ah, that definitely makes sense.  I have something similar on my system.  Generally speaking, the game will depend mostly on your CPU and RAM speed.  If you increase those then your performance should increase.  Please be careful if you decide to overclock, though, as it can cause problems if done incorrectly.  It's not something I would recommend unless you are fairly good with computers(I'm not saying you aren't.  I just can't confirm that).

Wow did that really help? I have an Intel E6700 CPU

I checked my bios I have some kind of temp saving thing on auto..I checked CPU-Z I saw it hovering between 1.5-1.8ghz even though my CPU is 2.66ghz..if this works by disabling it I'll do it..PLEASE confirm I'm really panicky about touching my CPU settings....lol

I'm having a huge problem running anywhere in Odus, especially Toxxulia Forest.  Before I could sort've run okay around Ruins of Old Paineel, Lowlands, Eye of Dartain, Kerra Isle, but now it's become worse.  I'm hitting slideshow in Toxxulia, near slideshow in Paineel.

I have to drop down to Extreme Performance to move.  No particle effects.  But particles are needed for the crafting faction quest because of the feathers and sheaths on Kerra Isle, and the places to set the wards in Quel'Ule.  And even with EP running, I still have very slow movement.

I can't craft.  There's a two or three second delay soon as I start a recipe.  When I hit the button to counter, it'll take 2-3 secs to go off and I'll either get lucky and it takes or I utterly miss.  This happens in Paineel and in Quel'Ule.

Here's my dxdiag.

Yes, it totally fixed my issue - I can run the game at extreme quality now with a couple of tweaks with no problem. It's just a power saving setting so you're not really messing anything up by turning it off.
