All I can say is WOW!!!

There's so many things that have changed in the time I've been gone playing other games, while always chasing the next-best-thing(tm).

Here's some random thoughts about things I love in EQ2 from a returning player, in no particular order, that will have me resub'n once my 'wb' time is up.

  • Depth - just nothing else I've played recently has different games within a game that EQ2 does.  This is taken directly from EQ1 (and others to be sure) but has been extended and polished nicely.
  • Solo-friendly play - I know this really gets under the skin of the 'MMORPG's are meant for grouping' types but I can't play 24x7 and really I wouldn't want to.  EQ2 is now a much friendlier solo player experience for when I get home from work, tired, and am looking for some distraction.  Sure I miss that Nektulos isn't the spirit shard infested death walk it used to be but the atmosphere and nature of the zone are still intact.  I just love that place and it really seems like one of the better designed lowbie zones in the game.  My friend that I got to subscribe to EQ2 recently and I were also able to do our SK armor quests without too much of a hassle and got the gear when we actually could use it rather than when the whole line was grey and of no use to us anymore.
  • Expansion content is unbelievable!  I wouldn't have seen this stuff if they hadn't given me the full package to play with for this promo, but I got to tell you places like Maj'dul are just amazing and I can't wait to be able to adventure and take part of the quests in those areas later.  Same for TD etc., just amazing.
  • Players - was guilded almost immediately after logging in a new toon and am lucky to have fallen in with a non-powergamer/non-elite casual gaming type guil of people willing to help each other and to have fun.
  • Crafting system (see Depth) - I've never liked to craft in MMORPG's, just isn't my cup of tea.  A guildie took the time on Saturday to show me to the tradeskill tutor and got me started and I had a blast yesterday making stuff and trying to get crit successes and mitigate problems and it was a freakin' blast!  Although I'm only a L12 crafter, I think with some of the tradeskill xp pots I was given, I'll burn those to help me get to 19 where I think I can pick a subclass?

If it comes off like I'm pumped about playing EQ2 again, then mission accomplished! SMILEY

I don't think its that people think that MMO's are about grouping per se. But, more about interaction. Where it gets under people's skins is when people suggest changes to the game which distance players from each other more and more. Adding more solo content is fine. But, it is a MMO after all, so when people start asking for more solo content instead of group content, then you'll see some feathers get ruffled. Another example is that more people want to be able to hermit out in their homes and craft rather than rubbing elbows with their peers and interacting. But, meh. You get the idea. SMILEY

Gah.. don't burn your potions on lower levels! You'll kick yourself in the later levels when experience comes much more slowly. Most people level 12-19 during a lunch break. Those potions are one time use. Stow it away like Frodo did with that bottle of light for those "dark places". SMILEY

/em does his best Mr. Burns impression... "Excellent!"  SMILEY

I'm back for the summer myself, tho' I never really "quit".

And bleap,  no one is saying that there aren't issues... this is an MMORPG, there're ALWAYS issues!

But EQ2 is still one of the most polished, quality MMO game experiences out there.

I agree, it's the most polished game on the market.....and for a game that is losing market share hand over fist and has problems with devs giving out info to guilds that would typically constitute cheating, it's doing remarkably mediocre.....When will the server mergers take place...I would like to be able to get a group again....

Sheeze all these jaded people who just have to throw cold water on a returnee's enthusiasm.

EQ2 IS much better then it used to be.  I played a pally to 42 when it first released (much more of an accomplishment then then it is now) and left when my entire guild left because soloing wasn't an option and I didn't feel like doing the LFG/PUG route anymore.

I came back because one weekend I was feeling particularly bored.  (I had an active WoW subscription but hadn't felt like playing it for months)  I always did love the EQ2 graphics and figured it would be fun to see it again.  Then I got on, decided that my favorite race from EQ1 (Iksar) weren't entirely messed up in EQ2.  While the male looked horrible the female looked pretty cool.  So now I'm playijng a female for the first time ever in any MMORPG.

I figured I"d play to 20 or whenever the game broke down for me (i.e. required grouping to accomplish anything).  I made it a month to month subscription because I figured I'd be gone in a month.    So far I've been back five months and am still going strong.  The WoW subscription has been canceled.

I love all the new areas.  I started in Darklight Woods, moved to Timorous Deep, and only started in zones I remembered from before with Thundering Steppes and Nektulos.  Even though I could have gone to Butcherblock (not sure why i didn't).  I LOVED Desert of Flames.  If I could have stayed there until 80 I would have.

Yep, the game is definately better now.

The "you have to group in MMORPGs" mentality is still strong with some people, but for many of us this way is MUCH better.  Grouping is fun and I'm always happy to join a group, but it shouldn't be required to get anything done like it used to be.  MMORPGs should have other ways for players to interact.  Forced grouping makes things too rigid and the game too brittle.  If you have a regular group and loose your healer or your MT everyone else is hosed.  EQ1 got away with it because the whole MMORPG concept was new and it had no real competition.  It was literally their way or the highway.  Therefore, people were willing to put up with more since basically they had no choice if they wanted to play an MMORPG.  I remember melees waiting for HOURS by Karnors trying to get a group and unable to do anything without a group.  That was not fun.  I wouldn't tolerate it now.

Yes, the game has problems.  I've got a news flash for people harping on that.  ALL GAMES HAVE PROBLEMS.  Every single MMORPG I've EVER played had balance issues and broken features.  Every single one.  It comes with the territory.  Heh, the classes I'm playing now (bruiser and monk) are notorious for issues (especially bruiser) but I'm still enjoying them.  I concentrate on the things I enjoy, not the things I don't.

Way to take a crap on someone's good time. I don't get people like you... why be here and spend your money if you're this miserable? Ok, I need to chime in. I really love it here. I've been playing steadily for 2 years. I beta'd here and didn't care for the game. I honestly can't think of any MMO that I liked in beta testing. I'm definitely one who likes a more polished game. That being said, I still can't make myself like WoW, polished though it is. I "want" to like it. I have alot of friends who play. I just can't get into it. I tried AoC over the last week. It's in beta so maybe that's why I didn't like it, but the things that turned me off aren't really bug issues, but actual gameplay issues that are meant to be the way they are. I hate the night questing thing. What a turn off. There's just something about that game that doesn't sit well with me. It's "clunky" for want of a better word. That's one of the things I love about EQ2... it's streamlined, linear, goal oriented, and "clean". I don't mean clean of bugs, just clean in how quests are presented, crafting, graphics, etc.anyway... glad you're back! SMILEY

I dry off rather quickly! I haven't played an MMORPG title yet that didn't have it's various issues and imbalances etc, EQ2 is no exception. Being most recently a returned SWG player (from WoW etc) I spent the last 2 years basically playing a game that is not really expanding or evolving and is in maintenance mode and recycling old content due to a hamstrung budget most likely.

I just have to go on about what is cool about EQ2 since it's an invograting change after past experiences I guess.  In 30 levels I'm still having a great time and have just discovered that tradeskilling can also be a blast.

Thanks for the replies one and all SMILEY

I am glad you're having fun.  That's all that really truly matters, that you find the fun in the game you're playing.  It's nice that you're trying to infect others with your newly found fun.If the annoyance level gets higher than the fun level, it's time to either take a break or leave all together. Those who harp on -alledged- acts of a few months ago (the only "proof" was from a single source and not independantly verifiable and was fueled by speculation from many voices from that single source) should take a long look at their annoyance vs fun levels.  If their fun is lower, they shouldn't spend their every waking day trying to bring down the fun of everyone around them.  If their fun is higher, if they didn't dwell on the negatives it could probably go higher yet.

I'm going to chime in here too...I do love this game.  I try not to get into all of the headache of worrying about what changes are made that may impact my class in what some perceive to be a negative way...The way some people on these boards dissect it, it seems it has become more of a job to them than a game.If a class I am playing becomes boring, or not what I enjoy anymore...I roll a different one.  There are so many zones and I have not encountered every zone with every toon, so, when I roll a new one, I try something different and go to places I have not been much before.I can honestly say, after playing EQ1, Guild Wars, SWG and EQ2, this is my favorite.

EQ2 rocks!  I have to agree with the OP.  I been here since release almost.  And it has morphed alot over these past 4 plus years.  But there still is no other game around that offers so much to do, and is nearly as polished as this one.  And welcome back to those who have left and recently come back.  I suspect the game will be almost hard for you to recognize in alot of ways now.

I still think EQ2 has some of the best graphics when settings are on max everything. And this game is 4 years old! Now if only they would upgrade the engine to take use of new technologies so TONS more people can enjoy EQ2 in all its glory.Other than that, just about everything else in the game is far superior to all other MMO's. There are some players who will try and tell you otherwise, yet they are still playing aren't they? SMILEY SOE must be doing something right. ( <- My opinions remember, I've tried almost every MMO to at least see their pathetic attempt to top EQ2 fail miserably.)So in reply to the OP,I <3 EQ2 too!P.S. /feedback Bring back the horse mounting animatioN!!!!!

I have come in for the promotion as well and have found this game to be a breath of fresh air.  I have had the game since shortly after launch but have not played much.  Now that I have gotten to travel a little bit of it I have to say that this game world is amazing.  I am not a fan of the character models and use a combination of SOGA and classic but the game world looks great.
