Buy Echoes of Faydwer retail and you get all the expansion packs with it.  This will also give you access to both expansion AA lines.

Which version of the game did you purchase did it have a lady with a magic staff on the top with a evil white haired guy on the back is the original box/ a lady with a magic staff and a dude with a sword thats the Desert of Flames box/ floating Islands and dragons on the box means you picked up the original game+Kingdom of Sky+DoF/If you picked up the box with a legolas looking fellow in the center with a bow congratulations you picked up Everything you need to get all the games content right now-adventure packs. now you asked if the expansions are a must DoF not until your in the 50s KoS gets you the Class Achievement point tree which if you only have that expansion you start getting post 20 EoF gets you teh subclass achievement point tree, and now you can accumulate Achivement points starting at 10 I'd say KoS and EoF are a must at this point. buuuuuuuuuuuut if you want to wait you could just hold till november and get RoK and alllllllll the previous expansions included.

If you just bought the DoF retail box recently, yes it was sadly.  Buy the EoF retail box (or the digital download now too I believe) and you get base EQ2, Echoes of Faydwer, and Kingdom of Sky + Desert of Flames as well for free. The Adventure packs...  Splitpaw Saga is pretty weaksauce.  I don't know about the Crypts of Betrayal, but it may be useful at the high levels in EoF, as you get vampire-bane spells from doing CoB stuff, and there's a lot of vampires to kill in high-end Faydwer.  I'd also suggest getting Fallen Dynasty once you get a high enough level character to explore that place (it's 50+ish) just because the content there seems interesting. Edit:  Note that EoF and KoS are actually good at lower levels.  There are the achievements for one, which you gain points for as you kill named npcs, get certain pieces of loot, complete quests, etc, which really allow you to buff your character up.  Kingdom of Sky has class specific ones (Crusader, Warrior, Shaman, Summoner, etc), and Echoes of Faydwer has subclass specific ones (instead of Crusader, it's split into Paladin and Shadowknight for example).  Finally, Echoes of Faydwer has level 1 to 70 content.  Meaning even at low levels, it has stuff for you to do.  I strongly suggest getting at least EoF because the areas in that particular expansion pack are quite a bit more interesting to level up in than the original game's areas. Second edit:  You can see more on achievements here, though not all information is up to date.  Class specific achievements don't require specific equipment (well, most don't) anymore, for example.

First off the EoF zones are far better layed out for new players and IMO are more fun. Also without EoF or KoS you will not get the AA points wich means basicly if you wait until your caped or until RoK is released, wich also includes all prevous expantions, you will have ALOT of AA grinding to do, however if you start earning AAs as soon as you can, you will more then likly be at or near 100 AA points by the time you get to the lvl cap(wich will be raised to 80 with RoK)

My sugjestion is to either live with the fact that you will get to the point where you will have to grind AAs, and just pick up the RETAIL BOX of RoK in Nov. to get all retail expaintions OR buy EoF now either from a Retailer such as Amazon.com and Best Buy, game stores don't seem to have EoF in stock anywhere, or you can go to Direct 2 Drive and download the Everquest 2 All in One Pack wich is all the retail expaintions downloaded digitaly. Whatever you do DO NOT buy the expaintions from the station store, the are just the expaintion only and will total you about $60 to get what you currently don't have, as apposed to D2D or someone selling the Retail Box wich is $40. or like I said you can live with grinding out number more AAs and wait until Nov and RoK, but you will miss out on the great 1-70 content in EoF.

Just go get a retail copy of Echoes of Faydwer.  It contains multiple DVDs which have the core game and all expansions for about the cost of what you pay for any single part.

I would encourage you like others here to get the Retail version of EoF that has all the expansions - EoF retail pack gives you all these :     Original Everquest 2 - L1-50     Desert of Flames - L45 - 60     Kingdom of Sky - L55 -70     Echoes of Faydwer - L1 -70 It does Not give you any of the adventure packs. I would personally only bother with the Splitpaw Adventure pack and Fallen Dynasty Adventure pack. Splitpaw content scales to your Level between L20 & 60. Fallen Dynasty has content from L50 - 70 and imo is by far the best of the three expansion packs. Leveling is so fast these days that you will have probably out leveled the other adventure pack (Bloodline Chronicles) before you have completed it, as it does not scale with your level. My advice is don't wait until you hit L50 before buying the expansion. Even if you can't use all the new content of DoF , KoS, you will still gain Access to the Achievement Points system which with EoF you can start earning points from L10 Also don't fall into the trap of Just buying the Digital download of EoF, thinking you will get all the expansions you won't, and  this won't give you access to the all the AA system, only half of them.

Added some carification, SoE's DD is ONLY the expaintion and nothing else, however you can get All the Expaintions(sans adventure packs) Digitaly from Direct 2 Drive, just search for the EQ2 All in One Pack.
