Can people with this problem post their geographical location and whether they connect through a router or modem etc?

It's nothing to do with settings on the PC; using next doors wireless internet connection (not AOL) I can connect up fine.  It's looking more and more like it's AOL to me.

Well, I'm talking to this guy on AOL help, and he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.  I had to explain what a MMORPG was, and then he asked for the link to the website that I was trying to download from.  I'm having trouble getting through to him what the problem is.

So far he's blamed the DVD, the patch, the computer, and then the console I was using.  When I asked what he meant by console, he replied "the PS3 or XBox".

OMG! AOL.....I use AOL and also have a netgear router....last night we lost our connection completely and it was definately their fault. They have been making some changes for sure. I live a little west of London by the way.

got it to work. what i did in vista:right click shortcut, click compat tab. compatibility mode windows 98, and check the box to run as admin, and disable visual themes. right click icon again, click run as admin (yes, you do it twice basically).  run it, the update works. once finsihed, close out of it. right click the shortcut again, and disable ALL the compat things, and run it NOT as admin. works 100% now for me, minus anti-aliasing ans anisotropic filtering

Some useful info: I just checked my AOL email (I don't check it often, I use hotmail) and five days ago I received an e-mail from AOL that they are making changes, including:
  1. Your connectivity software will be upgraded
  2. Your connection will be moved to our new network
  3. The new network - some features that will work differently
It doesn't go into very much detail but I wouldn't be surprised if our problem was something to do with their changes.

That must be what it is.  The new network is either blocking the patch packets, or putting them to such a slow priority that blocking is effectively what's happening.

The 'help' people were completely unhelpful, both online chat help and telephone.

I know there isn't an issue with other providers, so I'm going to cancel my AOl account and go with someone else.

AOL tech support is nothing short of horrendous, I have had to contact them before and the problem is that everything is scripted so they employ people that completely non technical SMILEY

I will attempt to have a conversation with someone on Live help today as I refuse to talk to them over the phone.

Currently awaiting a call back from AOL 2nd level 2-3 hours I was told as their "tools" (I assume this means their software) isnt working at the moment.

I also have been with AOL for some 3 years now and never had this issue, I honestly dont think its an ISP issue altho it cant be ruled out are it would appear that all, or certainly a majority,  of us experiencing this issue are AOL customers.

I was, however, told today on live help that the migration to the new servers has not yet been completed so we can rule that out.

Ok a friend of mine whos good at technical stuff, is saying its probably the actual router rather than AOL. He said something about opening the ports of the router so that it can connect to EU servers. So does anyone know what the IP addresses are for the European servers of Everquest2?

(If any of that makes sense? :p )

I can understand why your friend has suggested what they have, but unless you (or me or anyone else thats using a router) has changed the settings then there is no reason for it to work 1 day and then not the next....

Anyway heres the info you requested:

EverQuest II LaunchPad and Patch Servers A TCP connection is initiated from the LaunchPad client port > 1023 to patch.station.sony.com port 7000. A UDP connection is initiated from the LaunchPad client port > 1023 to sdlaunchpad1.station.sony.com and sdlaunchpad2.station.sony.com port range 3016-3021 and 9700-9703.EverQuest II Patch:A TCP connection is initiated from the EverQuest II client port > 1023 to patch.everquest2.com, abepatch.everquest2.com, laepatch.everquest2.com, or amspatch.everquest2.com at port 7010. Some of the above patchers resolve to multiple IP addresses, so if you have a strict outbound firewalling policy, be sure to check for all IP addresses using a DNS lookup tool.EverQuest II Game Client:UDP connections are initiated from the EverQuest II client port >1023 to servers on UDP ports 9100, and UDP ports in the range 32800-33000. Additionally, ICMP messages type 0 (echo reply), 3 (unreachable), 8 (echo request) and 11 (expired) should be permitted bi-directionally between the client PC and the EverQuest II servers.EverQuest II Servers Subnets:There are multiple IP addresses for the Patch and LaunchPad clusters, and they may change as the network demands, so check often using a DNS lookup tool if you provide a specific firewall rule for these services. The EverQuest II server IP addresses are currently in these subnets: 64.37.158.*, 199.108.11.*, 199.108.12.*, 199.108.13.*, 199.108.202.*, 199.108.203.*, 195.33.135.*

AOL have confirmed today that they have blocked several ports recently due to 'high spam usage', so I'm guessing that's the problem.  I asked them if they could unblock it and they said they'd escalate the problem to a higher tier and I'd hear back.

But regardless, I have told them I'm closing my account with them, and I've signed up for a BT homehub thingy instead.  And for the moment, I'm using next doors wireless connection.

I'm going to be changing ISP also. Have had a pretty bad connection this weekend and on Friday I didn't have one at all. Customer support were useless to me when I spoke to them about the problem with EQ2. In fact the guy said he would send me an e-mail with what I needed to do and when I left live support and went to my e-mail it turned out to be a guide on how to clear cookies and history...SMILEY

Well am with AOL as well, just had a useless session with them on LIVE Help, guys says to me any loss of connectivity outside the UK is not their problem. I should contact the server owners of the server in amsterdam that keeps losing the connectivity..Bu$%%^! Is all i have to say, the problem is on their network but they have no clue..

So after 6 years with AOL, I am going to ditch them and go to another ISP. Any suggestions? Worse thing that could have happened to AOL in the UK was to sell their network to CarPhone warehouse and TalkTalk..A company reknowned for crappy customer service.

Before I make any decisions about ISPs I would like to know if any others have issues with EQ2 or any other game for that matter. Not too sure which one to switch to so some suggestions would be good SMILEY

i am having this issue now as well. i noticed something however: when i open the launchpad, a lp_plugin.exe stops responding. might that have something do do with it?

Try this for the LP_Plugin.exe, keep in mind that this helps the MAJORITY of the people, but it may not help everyone with vista.

first, locate the following files.

LP_plugin.exeEQ2.exeEverQuest2.exe

then for each one, right click them and then choose properties. from there you should see a button to "run as administrator" or something similar, i am not at my vista machine, so i cant remember exactly. in that window, look down it, and a little ways down, you will see a checkbox that does the same thing, but when checked, it runs each time the app is run and does not require you to do it each time it is run. also, there is a checkbox for the compatibility options. check that checkbox, and then make sure it is set to windows xp SP2 in the drop down just underneath it. it defaults to xp SP2, but i am just covering all the bases. then, if there is a button at the bottom of the window that says "apply" click it, then click ok. if there is no "apply" button, then just click ok.

now, when you run from the shortcut on the desktop, you do not need to set it to run as admin every time you start it, and you should not have the LP_plugin error any longer either.

also, it is a good idea to right click the station and EQ2 folders under sony in Program Files, and make sure the folder permissions for read-only is not checked. this will allow the patcher and the launcher to write patches to the folders if patches need to be done.

AOL have confirmed that they have closed off access to a % of ports to prevent P2P software usage, I have since provided their second level team with the ports required to run EQ2, they will investigate and get back to me on wednesday to confirm/deny if these ports that are needed are indeed some of the ports that have recently been closed.

In all honesty I dont fully expect to recieve a call back but you never know, as soon as I get any more information from them I will post here.

I would love to move to a new isp but tied into a 2 year contract that got me a free laptop SMILEY so im stuck - unless I breach my contract and end up having to pay through the nose.

I wouldn't be so sure about not being able to get out of that contract.  Contact your local citizens advice bureau, but I'm pretty certain you could argue that they breached the contract first by closing off access to one of the primary things you use the internet anyway.  And even if EQ2 isn't a primary thing, they don't know that SMILEY

nothing official.  i remember once during my tenure playing eq1 i read a post from the CR guy about bandwidth and eq1.  He said ironically, that casual gamers use the least amount of bandwidth and therefore are the ones they make the money on.

perhaps this is why this issue is taking such a back burner...they are saving a bit of bandwidth on us SMILEY

I haven't got it working yet but something has changed. When I try the patcher now it no longer says download cancelled. It seems to go on forever with no bar increase and no estimated time remaining. I have been checking out other ISPs and some people from my guild recommended "Be" but I have now discovered I cannot reach their website using my AOL connection. When I connect to the neighbour's broadband the site works and it also works from school. Any advice on what I can do or is it something AOL is doing?

I dont think you can put down being unable to access the be broadband website down to AOL blocking you, I also use AOL and googled Be broadband and found numerous pages, all of which I can access np.
