Remember, remember, the fifth of November...

Join the EverQuest II Community Relations Manager, Isulith on November 5th on the Splitpaw server to celebrate Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Night, if you prefer!).

We'll meet at 9:00 PM (London time) on Splitpaw to shoot fireworks and burn the Guy on the bonfire. Bring your guildies to the Commonlands, near the center of the zone, and we'll provide the bonfire and fireworks.

See you there!

I will try to be there! Beware House of LordsSMILEY

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

"Within a few decades Gunpowder Treason Day, as it was known, became the predominant English state commemoration, but as it carried strong religious overtones it also became a focus for anti-Catholic sentiment. Puritans delivered sermons regarding the perceived dangers of popery, while during increasingly raucous celebrations common folk burnt effigies of popular hate-figures, such as the pope. Towards the end of the 18th century reports appear of children begging for money with effigies of Guy Fawkes and 5 November gradually became known as Guy Fawkes Day. Towns such as Lewes and Guildford were in the 19th century scenes of increasingly violent class-based confrontations, fostering traditions those towns celebrate still, albeit peaceably. In the 1850s changing attitudes eventually resulted in the toning down of much of the day's anti-Catholic rhetoric, and in 1859 the original 1606 legislation was repealed. Eventually, the violence was dealt with, and by the 20th century Guy Fawkes Day had become an enjoyable social commemoration, although lacking much of its original focus. The present-day Guy Fawkes Night is usually celebrated at large organised events, centred around a bonfire and extravagant firework displays.

Settlers exported Guy Fawkes Night to overseas colonies, including some in North America, where it was known as Pope Day. Those festivities died out with the onset of the American Revolution, although celebrations continue in some Commonwealth nations. Claims that Guy Fawkes Night was a Protestant replacement for older customs like Samhain are disputed, although another old celebration, Halloween, has lately increased in popularity, and according to some writers, may threaten the continued observance of 5 November."

I'm trying to convert this.  GMT has already changed their time? But the US won't have by then? So that's 6 hrs from EST, then minus another 2 for my time zone, so that's 1pm my time (unless I didn't the conversion backwards).  /snicker

Oh hey! Do we get access to the Euro servers if we are on US servers?

Hmm an icecream seller tik-tok popped up, wondering if that's it for the party? Random for Bonfire Night!

People gathered in Commonlands from about 8:30 onwards.

9pm came and went, no sign of anything,

10pm came, Isulith appeared as a scare crow, gave out goodies, ran out and disappeared again.

30 mins later Isulith reappeared, more goodies, chatted a bit, then left.

No Bonfire, No fireworks, and quite a few unhappy people on the whole.

Partially true - as are most of the posts that seem to deride SOE on these forums.

Isulith was about 45 mins late to the scene - most likely due to confusion centering around our recent time change. When she did appear - as a scarecrow - she was mobbed. She then handed out a bunch of goodies and chatted with the folks around her. She eventually ran out of things to distribute - fireworks and other goodies - and had to go gather some more. She didn't just "disappear."

It also must be noted that some folks were criticizing both Isulith and SOE for not giving out unique house items and gear - in a rather forceful manner. I thought this was quite rude and incredibly uncalled for. There were fireworks - Isulith handed them out herself. As for the bonfire, it was too bad she couldn't roast the folks who were roasting her over things that were never promised in the first place.

All in all, it was a pretty nice event - aside from the attacks on Isulith. The only thing that did not happen was an "official" bonfire.

I don't doubt the good motive behind this, but it was disappointing to have purposely gathered there for 8.45 and stayed until 9.30 with nothing having happened. They always post us the link to the time converter, so its a shame the same thing wasn't done to ensure when you say "London time" you know what London time is.
