Hey everyone, GREAT news! Mine is fixed, and hopefully this fixes yours...  I've tried probably 15+ different drivers from Nvidia, but finally now Nvidia released a new set of drivers on 10/25/2010 (this past Monday).

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-w...hql-driver.html

That link might not work for everyone, as it is to the XP64 version.  You are generally looking for the 260.xx series of drivers though.

Hopefully this will help!

Well, apparently I spoke too soon.  It did not fix the issue entirely, but it did make it dramatically easier to play.  Now it only crashes every hour or two, which I can at least live with.

EDIT: I've noticed that it gets worse as the day goes on (the longer I play).  By the end of the night I was crashing every 10-15 minutes again.

Yep, seems like this issue is not going anywhere... Anyone heard anything recently?

SOE "Tech Support" is still wasting my time looking for a problem in the wrong area entirely, and we've been getting nothing but chirping crickets here on the forums.

The problem seems to be less nasty with the most recent Nvidia drivers, but man it is hella frustrating when it does crash randomly.

http://d.imagehost.org/0891/eq2error2.jpg

wonder if this is the same problem?

at this point i was still able to use the chat, but after i clicked ok, eq2 shut down asap.

btw, there is NO updated crashlog. the last crashlog is about a Unhandled exception CUSTOM_PURE_VIRTUAL_CALL a few days ago.

edit2: and after restart i had 2D! grafikcorruption, 3D grfx was all fine.

chattext pixelised, inventoryicons gone or randompixelised.

grfxcard temperature ok.

edit3: this minigame is fun fun fun, every crash a new errormsg:

Nothing new to report on our end. We don't have an in-house repro for this problem and it doesn't appear to be affecting that many people. My guess is that its something system, driver or software related because it doesn't happen to most players. Obviously there's a problem and we're looking into it, but I don't have an ETA.

the ONLY! change to my system was a javaupdate.

*Update*

Ever since the last major patch I have been experiencing this issue with my Vista laptop which has an ATI card. Prior to this update I had no issues what so ever and I was able to run EQ2 for up to five hours on my laptop.

I have tried every fix out there but nothing has helped. The video drivers have been updated and at one point I even loaded older drivers to see if that would help but it hasnt. I downloaded DX9 from the Microsoft web site which hasn't helped either. I finally dug up my old Athlon machine which runs XP SP3 and has an nVidia video card. I was able to play for able to play for about an hour an fifteen minutes before the game crashed. I have started to notice a trend with the crashes though.

The game hasn't crashed while in a city (at least for me anyway), it always happens in a major zone, like Antonica, Frostfang Sea, Somborn Village, Thundering Steppes, Nektulos etc. I'm not sure what the correlation is but I hope this is helpful in determining what the issue is and how to fix it.

Sorry liquidtroll, but that looks like you are having a completely different issue.  Similar effect, but different type of error.  I would highly suggest that you open a new separate thread here on the support forums to see if you can get help specifically for that.

Regarding our issue, it looks like we are still stuck at square 1.

Sadly it seems you're right Elric, and i guess we're too small of a customer group for them to try and work harder on the issue than they are.  I just resubbed today as they said there was several fixes to client crashes. But i am now back to where i was once again. I don't know what to do anymore in regards to the issue. i've tried everything from reinstalling the game, reinstalling drivers, directX, removing suggested files, changing in game settings, changing catalyst settings etc etc etc etc..

But the issue persists and hardly any response from the developers. I guess i will have to ask for a refund of the money i put in today as i refuse to lose money on something that is clearly not fixed and has no priority what so ever from SOE.

It's been a month and nothing has been done to fix it, or atleast that is how it seems to me..

And its fairly simple too, if i remember correctly, we all use XP, we all run ATI cards.. SOE messed up big time in the patch for us on october 12th, but seemingly refuses to fix things. Instead just go on about saying that our systems aren't supported etc.. when they dang well worked fine before their patch messed things up.

Well a small update,

I've been able to log in for a little. and noticed when the error seems to happen the most often.

Any overland zone with alot of water seems to be the root of the problem. I went with a toon, that had not had the issue prior, to Enchanted lands. And there the screen did the usual flicker before the error.. but unfroze for about 10 seconds, where i noticed the water had turned every funky rainbow color possible.

And my other chars with similar issues, all had the problems around large bodies of water in game.. ie.. Antonica, EL, Frostfang sea and such

So i wonder if perhaps its an issue with the ATI cards and water rendering.. possibly relating back to the AA issue other ATI users are having as well.

Hello, I reinstalled EQ2 today and got exactly the same problem, my log showed the same crash error at the character selection screen (water present) I use an ACER Asipre 5740G (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 in it). Only changes I did was changing resolution to one that fits the whole screen and downloading the last Catalyst software, so far, game didn't crashed again and I've played so far in the new halas newbie area (water present again...)

Having the same problem. I get to either loading UI resources or Adding Character to Game and you can literally WATCH the poor router reset like someone toggled the power. It is also intermittent for me, but consistently denies me the ability to play. Oddly I never have the problem when I connect to WiMax from my business, only on my my Netgear CGD24G router or on the verizon router (my wife works in telecom so we need 2 routers for some reason I can't fully understand).

I am using an ASUS G73 Notebook which uses a Radeon HD5870 graphics card. I went to portforward.com which the tech guys seem to chant like a mantra to fix anything relating to router problems, ignoring the fact that the poor router worked just fined before I dutifully went. And I  couldn't understand the [Removed for Content] instructions so I paid the $30 to download the software they sell and it configured everything to the port forwarding specs necessary and that did nothing to solve the problem.

I played EQ2 when it launched and quit 5 years ago precisely because the game was great, but so buggy that it was frustrating to play. When I find myself sitting in front of my computer screaming I have to face the fact, I am not having the "fun" I am paying for. So when I returned, 5 years later, I figured the kinks would be worked out. And they seemed to be. Until this latest issue that I see now is clearly not isolated to just me. I signed up for a whole year of prepaid for the bonuses and then bought a ton more station cash. I'm in for over $450 easy and I can't play. At all.

Since I am not a tech guy I'll try a few more times to log in. If it doesn't work I'll do something else for a few days/weeks and then I'll come back. If it still doesn't work I'll just stay gone and suck up the lost money. I won't call tech support. I won't learn a whole new set of knowledge relating to port forwarding and rifling through files with jumbles of letters that quite frankly hurt my [Removed for Content] eyes. I just don't want to do that crap. It's not fun. It's not what I came in search of purchasing. I'll simply go away. And that is the manner in which businesses fail or succeed. Right now I am seeing a lot of failure.

Telecom =! IT. I don't know why you have two routers at home. Do you have a router set up behind a router? If you only have a few computers at home there should be no reason why you would have that kind of setup. If you do then it is possibly part, if not all, of your connection problem.

You being unable to load into a zone is not the same as the game 'crashing'. "Crashing" is when the game locks up, just vanishes with you staring at the desktop, and / or giving you the error message that it had crashed.

Your reply to this old thread is not the same as having the same issue. People that don't know about computers seem to want to always not concede that it is possibly not on their end.

For the "real crashes" happening within the last couple months, I already started a thread here before the holidays. It appears on my W7 64-bit 8 GB RAM system, after several hours, maybe a day+ of constant logged in, the game eats up all available 32-bit memory til there is nothing left so it crashes. It loads up about 500-800k, then over time reaches the ceiling of ~1.3 GB (with browser and other background processes taking up the rest). This is just like the behavior of Oblivion, which if you played that game extensively with mods and reading about tuning, you know about the 4 GB patch. This little program edits the header of the exe you select (little entry for the exe you specify telling it is ok to use 4 GB on a 64-bit system).

Unfortunately if you don't have a 64-bit system then this is not for you. If you have a 32-bit system you could try running Game Booster (Google it) which temporarily disables unnecessary background services, freeing up memory. It will also clear some of the unfreed memory while doing so. There are so called memory cache cleaners/defraggers out there (Download.com, Tucows, etc) that will run in the background, cleaning up memory that is available for use but has not been freed up by other programs after being done with it. Game Booster says it defrags memory but not all memory defraggers will work the same.

Until the holidays are over, you will just have to deal with it a while. SoE employees are humans too and take time off.

Telecom =! IT. I don't know why you have two routers at home. Do you have a router set up behind a router? If you only have a few computers at home there should be no reason why you would have that kind of setup. If you do then it is possibly part, if not all, of your connection problem.

She doesn't work in IT. If she worked in IT she might could fix it. She works in Telecom. The two fields are not interchangeable. She sells and installs backbone network. She needs a separate router because the Brighthouse router has issues with her companies dedicated server. I don't know what that issue is just that she has it and that you don't know the difference between two vastly different fields. Saying someone in Telecom is the same as someone working in IT is like saying someone who fixes cars is the same as someone who builds roads.

And if a cash is "to the desktop" then that is what I have because when it gets to adding character to zone the game...CRASHES TO THE DESKTOP. And also resets my router which I imagine the router finds rather annoying.

The reason I know it is not "on my end" in any meaningful way is because every other function of my computer works fine including router and internet connectivity and including the software of all other online games. And it also works fine on WiMax. The only thing that does not work with my equipment is EQ2. Every other piece of software I own works like a charm. I also know that I am not alone in this problem. Still if there is a "problem" on my end, it actually isn't my problem.

I am simply here to purchase a product. If they can't sell me a product that works with my equipment like all the other games I play regularly work with my equipment, fine. I understand that not all companies are equally good. Some are better than others at servicing their accounts. Some products perform better than others. This product does not perform well, for me, on my mass produced computer running through my mass produced router the way that it does for every other game.

At the end of the day the failure of their product to work on my equipment is not my problem. It is theirs because my playing their game is not a commercial endeavor on my part, so if I go play another game because this one won't function it isn't a problem for me. I tried it, it failed to perform, if I move on; not my problem. I'm a very casual gamer. My highest level character is 55 and that took a year of occasional play to get to. I can fart around on games that work and put my meager free time for gaming to better use.

Cheers!
