Greetings, Norrathians! We are thrilled to make the highly-anticipated announcement of the winners of our Notable Norrathians Forum Challenege! It was not easy to choose just ten out of the amazing entries we received. The talent and creativty displayed were truly wonderful and there's a certiain very-jealous dark elf in the office right now! We'd like to thank everyone who submitted an entry (the dark elf made note that she's saving a few for her own desktop wallpaper) and we invite everyone who didn't win this time to resubmit the next time we have a similar challenge. The following entries will be made into in-game paintings:

The rest of the pictures I more or less know from the forums, but could the author, or Amnerys, or someone else, tell me which Notable Norrathians are pictured in this one?

I hate to be the one to say this, but how in the world did the Bootstrutters painting not place!

That one was absolutely beautiful, colorful and creative and was REALLY looking forward to it being made into a painting.   /Sigh Oh well, maybe next time.

OH! Wonderful art!

Please please please let them be up a little longer than the last ones were and make an announcement in the welcome screen when they are placed up for sale. I know a lot of people who didn't even know about the others until they were gone.

Yes, seriously how did it not place? It's an amazing piece. I love it and it would be perfect for my characters houses. I know a lot of people really liked it ... how much work would one more be?

Big congrats to all the winners!

My personal favorite remains Tuatha's drafling. I love the unique and inspiring style.

There are certainly other entries that would have fit right in there with the top ten, but these will make nice paintings.

I second this, how on Norrath Bellacouste's Bootstrutter pic did not make top 10 is beyond me.

I'm also wondering why there has been no mention of the results on the official EQ2 Facebook page at all?

First off, a big congrats to all of the winners. I have to envy the sense of accomplishment each artist is going to feel knowing their work is going to be gracing homes all over the many servers of Norrath. This is really a fantastic thing. All of the artists deserve a round of applause for even submitting work, that's a big step, and I really hope nobody feels too bad for not making the final cut.

I have to agree with the sentiment expressed so far. While I would have chosen some different pictures myself, I am beyond flabbergasted that Bootstrutter didn't make the final cut. Absolutely no offense to any of the artists who won, but this too was an amazing piece, and I hope maybe it gets added as an eleventh picture by popular demand.

On kind of a tangent note, I hope some day SOE can embrace the notion of letting artists sell their art. Imagine if an artist could sumbit their work, and assuming it passed certain standards, it would be available for purchase via Station Cash. SOE could take 50% of the profits, and the artist would get the other 50%. That's the iTunes profit model right there. Of course, I'd hope SOE would be more generous than that, but that's neither here nor there. There's plenty of debate about the merits of buying extra game content, though I think a lot of that debate would go away when it comes to buying player-made content, and supporting artists.

Using something like PayPal to manage all these micro transactions, the payments system would be relatively easy to set up, and the real question is whether or not the game engine could support all of the art that would come flooding in as a result of this.

Anyway, yadda...

Congrats once again to the winners! I am eagerly looking forward to seeing this art hit the game!

I wondered about this as well.

I had thought it had something to do with this rule here in the original posting:

Also note, while planning your image keep in mind that the borders of the images may be cropped when they are converted to game art.

Alot of the bottom and side edges have important stuff right at the edgeline.

A note to the forum managers who read this - I think this is an absolutely fantastic idea. We get to see more cool stuff in our houses, and we get to reward the most dedicated of players in the process.

I for one would gladly dedicate a block of my time to creation of in-game paintings for sale on the Marketplace, especially if I would actually be making money, whether it was a percentage of sales, or a flat one-time payment (though the one-time payment would have to be something close to my usual commission rates).

I think opening the door to player-made content would indeed be a great use of the Marketplace venue. It would take some of the load off SOE as far as creating Marketplace content, they would still make money, and the artists would make a little money. Win-win all the way around, really.

Congrats to everyone

I also was surprised to not see the painting in there as well. I would have hated to have been a judge. lol

I think the player made content would be really cool idea.   or the artists be able to get a recipe for them to sale in game, that would be super cool. hehe

I want more then one, so now I got to go bust butt to make some status! haha

Congrats to the winners!  I do hope to see some of those that didn't get chosen come back for later challenges, I really liked way more than 10 of the entries!

I would LOVE to see a way for more player-made content to be allowed in game also.  I can see the QA for something like that to be really overwhelming tho.

I don't see why. All the art department has to do is take said image and slap it onto a frame. Shouldn't be that difficult. Of course, it would have to pass a close looking over to make sure the art isn't something that shouldn't be shown to EQ2's playerbase.

Now, if the devs would allow those who are very technical in nature to design their own armor (by putting a texture onto the oft-overused robe model, or another model currently available to players)...now that would be cool. Especially if they were allowed to have a transparent texture for parts of it.

As a real world artist and art educator I just have to make 2 comments. First, on the above, "how much work could one more be?" What if the one more were not the one you liked? Should there yet be one more and then one more? It was a contest with a certain number to be chosen as the winners. Congrats to the winners! Let's not cheapen their moment of honor with our wounded pride.

Another quote...

"On kind of a tangent note, I hope some day SOE can embrace the notion of letting artists sell their art. Imagine if an artist could sumbit their work, and assuming it passed certain standards, it would be available for purchase via Station Cash."

I think this thread, so far, explains exactly why it "ain't gonna happen."  Too many people would have their interpretation of the "certain standards" and would be screaming and crying that their work was not accepted even though it was within those standards. For every one person that got their work accepted there would be 50 who felt that their "pitcher" was every bit as good and would be at least a bit soured against SOE and EQ2.

On a side note, if you think your fantasy art is good enough to sell and you are looking for RL cash, check out some of the POD (Print On Demand) services out there on the Web for which you supply artwork to be printed on everything from T-shirts to posters and you can sell from their Web site with no monetary investment on your part.

Since we haven't had a "major" GU since the winners were announced, it's a safe bet that they aren't in game yet.

Probably some time next month, would be my guess.  SMILEY

Yeah, I was just assuming that the Bootstrutter's one would make it in. It was easily one of the top 5.

I really hope these are going to be both house and guild hall placeable this time.

Where do you see this as a 'house-only' challenge? This was an art contest, it had nothing to do with decorating or anything of that nature.

Personally, I think the paintings should be house or guild hall placeable. Several of the winners that I know personally are members of guilds who are very proud of them, and would like to display their members' works in their guild hall. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this, and would sincerely hope this is allowed.

Out of curiosity, has any idea been given of roughly when we may expect GU 57?

If I'm calculating correctly, around the end of August seems likely... but hey, I'm only human on this side of the screen, and my "internal calculator" sometimes hiccups.

So a rough guesstimate would help with combatting the suspense, if one could be offered from someone official.

So, with GU 57 happening somewhat soon... where will we find these new in-game paintings, please? SMILEY

I've nosed about a bit on Test, but I didn't find them.

I may have been looking in the incorrect places, so a nudge about where to look would be helpful!

Thanks for your time. SMILEY
