So I've decided to try level locking, and have some questions. I've been reading about it, and there's a lot of contradictory opinions out there, so I though I'd ask my questions directly. If it matters, I'm starting an Erudite Coercer in Freeport on a PvP server.

1) When should I level lock? I've heard lvl1, lvl9, lvl12.... although I guess each may have it's merits, I'm not sure what they are.

2) Do I disable combat XP, quest XP, or both?

3) I generally solo, and only group when several people are going after the same mob. I try to clear out all the quests in a given area before I move on to the next. Should I alter my playstyle at all?

Again, I know these have been asked a million times, but I want to make sure I'm 'doing it right'. Thanks!

Hi, Golgothan - you don't begin to accumulate AA points until you are level ten, so that would be the soonest you would want to - and I usually lock both Quest AND Combat to be able to complete the most quests, and I usually wait until level 12, 22, 32, etc. because that is when you get your upgrades in armour and spells. You can always temporarily unlock if you want to level a bit. Don't forget to unlock when you are crafting! Your playstyle will be just great for level-locking, when you do so you get to complete a LOT more quests before they grey out... Hope you enjoy this style of play as much as the rest of us! Good hunting!

What does locking xp have to do with crafting.

When you hand in a rush order you dont get any ts xp if you have quest xp turned off, so make sure you do have that enabled when you turn it in. Disable both combat and quest xp as otherwise you will still lvl pretty fast. As for at what lvl you should lock it, well 12, 22, 32 is indeed pretty smart, i would throw in two extra between them so you can do the content gradually, so 15 and 19 for example.

I also depends on how heavily you want to lock.

To some people successfully locking their character means doing every quest they can possibly find before moving on.  To others people they want a specific adventure level to AA comparison... like 2 AA for every 1 adventure level.

From what I understand, pvp doesn't start until level 10, and in order to "stand a chance" you will want to have AD3 for EVERYTHING and also be sure you've premade a complete suit of the level 12 mastercrafted gear (armor AND jewelry), so..... you level lock at 9 so you can harvest everything you need, then craft it up on your main and some crafting alts (that are aslo lowbies) then level ASAP to 12 where you lock again, but now in your "best gear."  Then you accumulate your 18 AA's you can get at level 12, then unlock until... whenever you want.

But I don't play PvP so I'm not really 100% sure of that.

Aside from writs (already mentioned), disabling bonus XP for having one or more level 80s will disable it for both adventure and tradeskill. Not an issue for someone just starting the game from scratch, but it is worth remembering down the road.
