Excavator's Cap and Lighting question

I got the DIRTY Excavator's cap while the event was live, but some friends of mine did not get it and have been doing the quests in Sol's Eye to earn the tinkered version. I was able to get a LOT of light from my original Excavator's cap, but now it seems neither of them will give off the light I am looking for (for very dark tunnels and such). Can anybody tell me what to do? I seem to remember that it had to be in the Appearance slot to get this effect, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Did it get changed? Any help greatly appreciated!

Are you by any chance wearing something else that gives off light? There are other items that give light such as the Earring of Solstice....

Ack! I can be so...inattentive, at times I guess. All the while I was convinced I had used it in the Apprearance tab, and once I got over that and tried it in the Equipment tab, it worked just fine. Sometimes I am my own worst road-block! And I had never noticed that the EoS also gave off light, so that's one less piece of equipment that I need to carry with me now (unless I'm looking for purple shinies)! Thanks for the tip and the reply!
