By the Wings of Dragons – Part IV

"He didn't raise." Eylee glanced up and over at Kaltuk. The dwarf's eyes were dark and saggy. The whole of the group stood around, watching him. The Feir'dal had explained what was going on when she reached the rest of the group, and though there had been some semblance of trying to keep at their work, most had been glancing at him so often that they finally just stopped. Most didn't react to the news. There had been too much, too fast today and everyone was so drained that one more should-be-crushing revelation couldn't affect them. Asharae, however, cursed audibly, and Illisia actually turned and embraced Bayle, burying her head against his chest. He stroked at her head dully and rested his chin against her head, staring forward.

So, there ... that's how Trakanon got Eylee's scrolls in his possession. Queen Elizerain got them and left the bag with Trakanon.

And I'm guess we're going to be picking up from this point forward.

Wonderfully done!  No answers about Roadyle, but that's as it should be, I think.  And now we get to continue the story ourselves!

My only major disappointment is, unless we meet an old mage named Aiven somewhere in the moors, The Third Key isn't related to the shadowmen after all.

Good stuff.

Whoever Roadyle turns out to be, he seems to imply that he has made sacrifices himself to save Norrath.

Is there a chance he was a Good void entity in the form of a high elf? So far I have yet to encouter a faction that did not have a spliter version working against them.

And so begins our journey, to find out what happened to the Ethernauts. And to stop the invasion from overrunning Norrath.

Obviously, some have had to survive, or at least Bayle would have had to have returned, as we know from our history lessons what part he plays on Norrath.

Well there we have it. We won't officially know who Roadyle is, but now that the whole "Cold to the touch" thing with his skin was not just an environmental or situational condition (Eylee did take quite some damage in the crash after all), I'll subscribe to the notion that it could be Mayong.

Roadyle blinked and looked at her as if he had no idea what she was talking about. Quickly, though, his expression shifted and he nodded to her, "Oh yes, definitely."

This pretty much confirm's Roadyle isn't Feir'dal and is using an illusion of some sort.

These stories have really done well in getting me pumped for TSO. I really hope this spark's a trend for more lore stories in the future, it add's to the immersion of the game nicely. Great job MDC!

*sniffles* and *dabs at tears leaking*

Oh my!  That was an amazing collection of stories!  I loved every single one of them.

I'm so glad you came to EQ2, DoomCookie.   ...

I always thought we'd be missing something when Vhalen left but, imho, I think you actually surpass him for bringing a story to life.

*goes to splash cold water on her red eyes*  .. I'm so sappy!

Thank you!

Aren't these the final stories wrote by Vhalen? I remember many people dubbing this expansion as his final gift to us.

Not being a raider I would love a tradeskill method of encountering the scrolls, in game, perhap Trakky needs some loot made???? Perhaps he wants some of his rougher ultra-rares made into untra-rare hoard wallow?

Hmm the fate of the Ethernaughts seems to be unknown, perhaps they still live in the void.

I've been writing the stories. Both Vhalen and I regretted we couldn't work together longer because we were a good partnership. He could focus on the greater tapestry of Norrath lore, and I could use my writing background to translate it into tales. We all worked on the story of the expansion and of the Ethernauts, taking ownership over it in different ways.

Anyway, I am glad you've all enjoyed them. I really fell in love with all the characters, and I'm glad you enjoyed reading about them.

Koada'dal.  Feir'Dal is a wood elf.  Roadyle was described as a high elf.

I really would like to see mythicals drop from TSO raid mobs for every character's weapons.  i.e. Kaltuk's Censor, Bayle's Sword, Illisia's Bow, Asharae's book of arcane teachings (symbol slot), Kruzz's cleaver, Eylee's drum (bard symbol slot item), Twiddy's sketch book (tradeskill charm), Fiddlewizz's bag of tools(tradeskill charm).  I love unique items!

An excellent idea, although I would be tempted to make such items Artifacts, given their importance.

Kultak, the dwarven templar...I was excited when I heard Kultak was in Ykesha's Stronghold.

But after raiding it myself, it was a gross old troll with the same name.... I was hoping to SEE some ethernaut action.

OK, so I'm sure I have huge holes in my ideas (my thoughts would look like swiss cheese if they were to manifest themselves), but let me see if I have some of this straight.

Illisia is the Hound of Zek from the Erollisi story.  There is some questioning whether or not the the artifact that the lovers/Illisia interact with in the Erollisi story has something to do with Mayong.  If that is true (that the artifact does indeed have something to do with Mayong) then I could see it being perfectly possible that Roadyle may be a time traveling Mayong, since his Phylactery already exists in this time (The Erollosi events occured before Wings of the Dragon and Plains of Karana stories).  If it's not then it could be someone/something else.

So, I guess I have a few questions that I'm hoping the real experts can help me answer.  Is the Bayle that's center to this story the one that becomes Antonius Bayle founder of Qeynos?  If so, then we know he survives the trek, but I'm not sure about the rest.  I assume no one ever really goes into the void, but do we know that for sure?

I also have one theory to get shot down.  I am thinking that while the party was successful in stopping the void, and sealing it up, because they were missing a rune it wasn't perfectly sealed (I believe part 2 or 3 said something about the staff getting damaged).  That seal worked pretty well until the gods left, and then either Luclin blowing up allowed the void to re-open causing the rending, or just plainly, the seal finally re-opened and caused the rending with its power, and no gods to put a check on the voids power (then Luclin blew up in a mostly unrelated event).  I can't remember which happened first off the top of my head (The rending or Luclin blowing up).

I believe it was said that the prophecies that came to Queen Elizerain also came to selected individuals around Norrath, a dragon is counted among those few, so it is assumed that Trakanon is possibly that dragon. The prophecies weren't exclusive to the elven queen - she just happened to store the Sunder prophecy in her throne room in Felwithe.

In the Ethernauts story, Eylee had a vision of the elven queen visiting the dragon with Eylee's satchel in her possession. That's how the stories came to be in Trakanon's Lair and when he was defeated recently, the stories finally were being told to the rest of world.

Though, we don't know if there are anything else being discussed between Elizerain and Trakanon beside the delivery of the scrolls.

Other topics ...

Mayong is not a Lich. Miragul was. The Eternal Prism in the poem can be found in Miragul's Menagerie right now (in beta for few more days). My opinion is that the dark visitor from the poem is Miragul himself. Of course, there are an agrument of "If he travel in time, why didn't he tell his future self not to botch the Lich spell?" You got to ask Miragul about that. The dialogue about Menagerie implied that Illisia and other two could had encountered Miragul, but it's hard to decide as a lot of time had passed and no one is around or alive to confirm the theory.

The Bayle of the Ethernauts was more like the prime ancestor of the Bayle family lineage. I suspect Illisia was as well. They both were getting cozy with each other during their adventures. So those two must had survived the Void and returned to Norrath. Twiddy Bobick may had gotten back too if he is a direct ancestor of Fiddy. As for the rest, it's questionable if they survived or not. The Ethernauts did enter the Void and stopped the first invasion, otherwise Norrath won't exist the way it is now.

The Rending happened first, then the Shattering ... i.e. Luclin blew up. It could be said that everything that happened in the last 500 years led to the weakening of the barrier/the seal to the Void. Gods leaving, the Rending, the Shattering, and all of that. The Rending seemed to cause damages to the Planes, not just Norrath - so it could affect the Void somehow. So I won't be surprised if the past events contributed to the latest invasion from the Void.

It is a decent working theory that the Rending may have been caused by the shadowmen or given them an opportunity to increase their influence on Norrath. Its also possible that the Shattering could of done the same thing. Is anyone aware of when Rivervale was invaided? Was it post-shattering or pre-shattering? I'm leaning towards post-shattering but I don't have anything to back that up.

I'm thinking we'll probably get more Lore connected to one event or the other as we explore TSO. This void story was created with EQ2, so it should explain at least one of the two major events. Hopefully it doesn't explain both! I would like to think there are some major events that happened in EQ2 that the Void isn't involved in...

I have great respect for Vhalen's works..but honestly, as much as I enjoyed them, I felt like I had to force myself to read them.

MDC's works on the other hand I just could not wait to start each new chapter of the story! Thankyou very much for these, and I eagerly await any more you choose to grace us with in the future.

gosh it's done? I'm sad I liked the story SMILEY

hope we get to learn more about what happened to them in the expension. Especially Asharae, since she's my favorite SMILEY

and yeah Roadyle isn't an efl, otherwise he wouldn't have reacted that way. We will certainly learn who he is in the expension. Did he betray them?

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading these stories. I recently had to play catch-up over the last two days, but getting to read them back to back was rather enjoyable.

The whole reason I got into Everquest the way I am today was for the stories like this. Specifically, the story of the creation of Norrath and it's history, as told by Vanusk and recorded by a member of Evil's Bane, in the Ruins of Kunark manual. That, along with the story of Venril Sathir having Danak kidnap Firiona Vie, really got me into the world.

Reading these stories have reminded me of those days. Even though I didn't really like the direction it was going, I did enjoy the stories similar to this that were added in EQ1 for the whole Wayfarers' storyline.

I think it would be cool if, like EQ1, there was a way to access all past and present stories of this nature in game, and I do hope that the future holds more of them as well.

In the book "On the Origins of the Phylactery", Miragul himself says he's the one who fights Illisia and later masquerades as Roadyle.
