Being the evil SK that I am, I like the faction quests where I can work on two factions at the same time, playing both off each other. Good example is the first part of the Thuuga quest is KP. Qyenos vs Freeport and playing the off each other.

![]() So when it comes to questing, what do you prefer? I chose exploration quests on the poll because first time through they are my favorite, but for replayability the kill x mobs are prolly my faves. I'll echo the I-Hate-No-Quest-Update-Messages sentiment expressed by others, though. Could you really care less if a quest asked you to do more than kill X mobs? Yes. It certainly makes it more engaging if it's more than just filling a grocery list. Do you pay attention to text? Usually, though during the ROK climb to 80 I got to where I'd just power click through the boxes... quest overload. :p Do you like interacting with the world? In the sense of altering terrain as a part of the quest? or? Generically, I'd say yes. Does a dynamic quality to quests really spark your attention (IE, something changes in the world, at least to you, once its done)? Very, very, very much so. I loved the tradeskill quest in Sinking Sands where you give the NPC the plague and build her a tent and the other consequences. That was very cool. Do you like humor in quests or would you rather quests remain serious? The humor is fun so long as they aren't all silly. |

The way you did the quest series in RoK is a perfect example of using multiple quests to present a story. Each area and faction had multiple NPCs that used multiple quest types (kill, hunt, explore, negotiate) to tell a story and teach lore. Continue that practice. a VERY important point - please allow quest series to be either Solo or Heroic. Some people like group play, and others like to solo. There is a lack of heroic quests - especially ones that take you into dungeons and instances - and what quests there are tend to be random "kill x inside this dungeon" or are the final stage of a long quest series. Use the quest series concept like you did with all the overland quests in RoK, but for heroic instances and dungeons. Make it possible so a player can advance in adventure level AND AA experience level either with solo quests or heroic quests. Both need to be viable and fair. |

my 2c from a quester who is very burned out right now:Kill quest - Kill me X orcs because I want to blood spillllled! These are not that bad, but they get boring if its repeatable.Gather quest - I need X samples of relics from those ruins, STAT!I do enjoy these in relax zen rock garden game mode though sometimes they will involve killing to get mobs out of the way. They are usually pretty easy quests I can do with any class without much trouble.Bauble quest - Spray X burynai with these raptor pheramones and see what happens!I hate these. Or maybe I just hate the ones where you have to leash 6 things and take them 1 at a time back to the quest giver. I guess if its not a leash a mob one they are cool.Story/Diplomatic quest - Negotiate with X and Y to achieve a treaty and bring a signed document to Z.I enjoy these also but they aren't my favorite.Exploration quest - Run around scouting a new area and get updates as you pass different points.Another one I enjoy when I want to relax and not worry much about mobs, I also love these for alts.conclusion:Variety is good. I like a mix, and I hate repeating quests, even on alts that grow up later.

![]() I like quests that have humor and change the world in some way. I especially like the live event ones like building the gates. But you need to do announcemnts that the events are happening like you do LoN events. That being said, I hate endless sameness quests that start out solo and end up heroic ( I want solo all thru or heroic all thru) travel for time sink I would like some clarity on some quest discriptions. Also a list of all the step ahead of time...not a displayed step thinking it's the last step to discover there is more, and more, and more. I hate 'forever' spawn time on mobs you need to complete quests. Also 'no quest items found' types that take forever get down right frustrating after a while. So many quests that require you have an object in inventory to activate...too many of those, and they get confusing which ones to use. I also accidently deleted one thinking I didn't need it anymore, and couldn't get it back to complete the quest line. sigh* just had to delete the quest and forget it. This happened on 2 quests in RoK. A suggestion, if the item has been 'used' and no longer needed, make it disappear out of inventory, so only the ones you still need are left.

Another vote for a bunch of small quests that contribute to a story arc. Think Soulfire or even the story arch lines from City of Heroes.

![]() i really like them all... i think the best experience i had in recent memory was with the first set of quests from RoK that really had you move from "quest hub" to "quest hub"..... i think others have commented that getting to know a zone this way is fun and entertaining as opposed to 5 quests for one huge zone that are pretty much all over the place in the zone. as for the kill x number of a mob quests...
for example - if i need 20 spider venom sacs, maybe i can purchase those from a Alchemist shop in town OR kill them, whatever my preference is, maybe an NPC barter in the zone - say - barter 5 of those wierd useless vendor trash items for the 20 venom sacs.... Older Quest lines: i also like suggestions about revamping some of the older epic quest lines (moa, claymore, SoD) - i don't know about making them non raid as i wouldn't want the reward itself to be nerfed, but doing something fun and different so that 3/4 ppl can group to get the update - MAYBE, just MAYBE - be able to hire (or unlock with a subquest) a level appropriate NPC raid force or group that can help you complete the quest line without trying to beg in channel chat for a full raid force to come along that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours to try and put together, only to find that folks who originally agreed to come along are now sick of waiting two hours and you have to start all over again with the channel chat spam? My hated quest: now - for the my single most hated quest in the entire game - I don't remember off the top of my hand what it's called, and i'm at work now... but there is a quest in sinking sands where you have to herd beetles... for some reason - i thought the reward was like an extra doohickey like brocks thermal shocker - SOOOOOO - i suffered through the something like 20 iterations of this quest ONLY to get some little lvl 20 something weapon that does ... well ... ALMOST NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean - this quest has you gather 3 beetles, turn in, then 5 beetles, then 6, then - OMG - i don't know how many times you go back and forth herding beetles that OTHER ppl are either trying to kill or trying to herd, and there is almost no darn reason for the quest that i can remember... it doesn't lead to another series of quests, or an access to something, or even a nice little extra damage reward like thermal shocker - i have to say - it is my one and only single most hated quest in the game |

The beetle herding quest lets you buy the ( rather decent at the time ) plate armor from her for like a copper each.

![]() MOST HATED QUEST The quests where you have to get the NPC Quest Giver to spawn. The ones in the Hidden Refuge really suck as the Froglok NPC quest givers vanish and you either have to free them ( repeatedly) just to turn in a quest or get a quest. This gets old after a while -- there should be a time period in which they will run back on their own. There are no longer enough people in this zone to make this a meaningful quest. Please fix it so the quest givers are permanently placed -- find another froglok to free. |

![]() My favorite are the HQ style quests. They follow a storyline, include lore, require collecting and killing and in some cases crafting. Of course these quests require the most time and thought to develop and implement. I would like to see a signature style quest for each of the character types which results in a lore reward of some type. Overall, I pretty pleased with the variety of quests already in EQ2.

![]() They are all ok, but after 4 years, I am about down to my remaining few wits on kill quests. I like the little series where things to do are varied. I am unduly tickled by quest dialogues that end with "..." Always cracks me up. |

I am a lore addict as well as an obsessive quester - I'd do them all, repeatedly and across multiple toons, if given the opportunity.I found the latest tradeskill quests to be some of the best questing in game. The dialogue with the NPC in Sinking Sands had me in stitches, and the references to the old Solstice earring gave me goosebumbs - as most of the Heritage quests did. The epic weapon quests were a very nice addition to the game as well. There are however a bunch of them I would never be caught dead doing: most quests involving hunting in T3 zones. I have scarcely seen as poor a drop/update rate anywhere else in game than in TS/Nek. The lower level zones had a very nice revamping, and the later end of the game was reasonably well designed from the get-go, so I would very much enjoy seeing the rest of "old world" tiers 3 through 5 get a shuffle. My most hated type of quest, and this might strike a chord in a few other people here, is books quests requiring "kill 10 X, read a page, repeat". A while back we saw a few new book quests being introduced that had put a spin on that horrible concept and made them enjoyable (none of them come to mind right now however).Would shiny hunting count as questing as well? In that case Nek forest would seriously need an increase in shiny spawns~

*Skips everyone's posts due to walls of text* =P sorry guys.I'm all over the place so I'll put it in pointsa) Kill x mobs with them being rare mobs. Hopefully that's been done away with since they redid the books, though I still have most of the series 1 ones *groannsss*b) Rare mob updates. Unless I'm looking for something uniquely special in that mob (Like, say, a perfect stomach with no flaws for a necromancer) I see absolutely no reason for this. If I can nab OTHER quests that have me killing more numbers of the same mob for a regular update, that may be more bearable. As is, the rare updates in Seb are annoying the heck out of me (though running COA every day helps...) c) I ADORE quests which are well-thought out and have a good reason for being there. Case in points are mainly the epic line quests - prismatic, the Ring of Destiny, Claymore, Godking, and SoD had amazingly well thought out plotlines which I love to follow. We *need* to have more lore in this game so that people don't just go "oh skip the dialogue" and are engaged enough to want to read it. d) I HATE running all over the place. Quests that send me five zones away just to get an update... and then run all the way back... are NOT fun. Timesink != making me run all over. There's plenty of interesting ways to make timesinks, such as adding steps to quests, but running is not one of them.e) Consider who ELSE will do a quest. Being a questaholic, I do every d a m n quest I can get my mitts on. I've gone back to TD to do those, and the most annoying ones were getting the mobs below 20%. I had to literally unequip ALL my armor and weapons because of all the procs they had, and even then I'd miss because my AA line gives my fists an inherent proc. =P True, the argument is that the quest wasn't made for level 80's, and it works fine as is, but devs might wish to consider who else is likely to do them.f) I detest quests which ask me to "kill X mobs" as I've said before, and would honestly like to see them limited in number. Anything more than 10 is going to find me getting pretty annoyed. And that's only if the mob is common. If the mob is rare.. see point one.

So when it comes to questing, what do you prefer? I am pretty happy with all quests except the kill 10, read book, kill ten, read book, especially when I am killing a group and the tenth is part of the group and I need to read the book before the next one dies so I can get the update for the next batch of ten!Could you really care less if a quest asked you to do more than kill X mobs? Depends on whether or not there are mobs to kill for it and whether they give updates, like Efreeti L&L for instance. I have 2 level 80 toons and neither has gotten that L&L finished because there are just not enough L&L pieces dropping from the very few mobs that are ingame (like less than a dozen in total?). I hate this L&L simply because no matter how much I farm there I cannot get the pieces, and I go back there at least once a month and kill all day long, you would think after this many years I would have gotten the pieces but judging by the prices on the broker I am not the only one who finds them incredibly rare. I have not and will not do this quest with any of my alts. Do you pay attention to text? Do you like interacting with the world? Yes I do, I am not a lore junkie but I do like the stories, my hunny reads all the dialog and gives me cliff notes, but I DO enjoy the story! I especially liked the TS epic dialog, it was very funny and entertaining, and it didn't require me to know any past lore to understand it. Not that that is a bad thing, I can always ask hunny what is up with stuff =)Does a dynamic quality to quests really spark your attention (IE, something changes in the world, at least to you, once its done)? Yes and no. I like good changes, the TS epic comes to mind again, and the guy in TD that has you bring him all those plants and he has them all around him like a garden you helped to create. But I HATE HATE HATE negative changes like the bells that forever change to popup menus after you do the boat ride access quests that we had to do in the beginning (I have played since launch so I had to do them, they were not optional as they are now), instead of simply being able to zone into Lavastorm, Feerrott, Everfrost, Enchanted Lands and Zek by just clicking the bell like any other toon that hasn't done the quest we are stuck with a pop up menu asking us to choose the zone or the boat ride! After so many years of this is it very old and a constant reminder that Older players are being forgotten, I find it hard to believe that any dev plays a toon that has to hassle with those popup menus like we do, otherwise it would have been fixed long ago. Basically fun is good, hassle is not.Do you like humor in quests or would you rather quests remain serious? Love Humor, gimme more and more please!!!On the same note I would like to agree that the shiny rate in Nek is abysmal, Nek pine needles anyone? This is another quest that I haven't finished on my two level 80's or any other toon because the needles are so incredibly rare, it is bad enough that the shiny rate is so much less than other zones but you get mostly shiny shards when you are lucky enough to find a shiny. I am in Nek quite often and I rarely see shinies in that zone, other zones are fine but this one seems to have been passed over by the Shiny Fairy =(I dont' mind farming for drops, even if it takes me a day or two to get enough, but months or even years? That is too much, way too much time to sink into a quest. Make it so they can at least be finished in a reasonable amount of time and it woudl make things much better.

![]() I choose exploration quests, but like to add that i would love to see them improved with some form of leaderboards. I loved the JBoots HQ and always wondered if anyone was faster than me. I think it would be cool to give a temporary title to the one who does all the rounds the fastest, or maybe a 'courier of Antonica' for the one who did Antonica the fastest etc.. This title would be lost if someone ran faster. This should offcourse mean that the quest would be repeatable. It would also be nice if there was a place (preferably inside and out side of game) just like the PvP leaderboards, but also something like the slayerstatus or the gigglegibler books could be used. On the boards there should also be things like the fastest person per class and maybe per level. I would also like the leaderboards to be used with more quests. I think it would even be cool to kill 100 gnolls (gnolls gave forkwatch faction in EQOA |

![]() Quest stuff I enjoy... Love quest chains - peacock and claymore jump to mind. I also want to mention the commanlands quest line, thats starts with Gerun Pontian - they are really good. Kanolth mentioned earlier about having the ability to do these in any order. Would be very sweet - really group friendly, which helps guilds/casual players. Also I'd personally prefer them to be all like swords of destiny, were you can actually get a non-raid reward. Changing the world, definately! Loved the Darklight Woods mushrooms, and the Mok Island quests where the plants you collected appeared. One I hated was the court of blades line, where someone you killed was still there... On my screen, he should be different Multiple paths to success, something I personally first saw in KotOR. If fred wants Gnolls/orcs/reet gone 'cos they trample his farm, you either kill X number of gnolls OR do the diplomacy bit. Means I can there and then dynamically choose what I do. Huge ammount with factions/roleplay you could do here. Finally, number of Quests giving a title, first mentioned in this post by summer... would be very nice. |

I voted "love em all", but I really don't read the text that carefully, just the objective. I believe a good many people are probably doing the same thing as 'having fun' is perceived as less down time and more active/action time. I have to admit that on occasions I'll just cycle through the Chat Bubbles, get the quest, then just read the objective. If I'm playing a new character in a new area I will most likely read through the quest with that first character, then just cycle through the Chat Bubbles with another character. This leads me to the Chat Bubbles, a minor irritation for me are the NPC's that move, bobble or gesticulate as you're attempting to click on a Bubble. I often times have to re-hail the NPC because I miss-clicked due to them and the Chat Bubbles moving.
I've always enjoyed the EQ quest system as its another element to the game world. What I'm finding now is that playing a newbie in TD is a lot more efficient than starting one in Antonica or Freeport. As you level in the old world you select a quest, zone, change zones, zone to another zone, search etc. Its not a major issue as its part of the immersion, however I can go to TD (newbie areas) and get quest all within the same zone and not suffer zone/change zone fatigue.
The kill X amount of Mobs can get tedious if its more than say 10, it may be a challenge to find that 'comfort' number that won't cause people to lose attention, however I know from hearing guild mates in Vent they will often times suggest not to get a certain quest due to the number of Mobs you'd have to kill repetitively. The “you do not find” would kind of fit in line with the X amount, so if you have a quest that has you kill 4 Orcs, however you're getting a “you do not find” kind of defeats the purpose of having a set number, in retrospect.
I do empathize with the Dev's in their effort to make quest enjoyable and compelling, the age of 'immersion' is changing and it seems that MMO's are moving to an instant gratification so as to keep people's attention and keep things moving in the game. The risk/reward system has always been my favorite from the old EQ days, but if you tried to implement that system and the old text/type system in todays MMO's most people wouldn't even consider playing it. |

Here is my wall of words. :PSo when it comes to questing, what do you prefer?I don't generally prefer one kind over the other. I've seen good and bad examples of each type of quest.Could you really care less if a quest asked you to do more than kill X mobs?I don't mind a 'kill X mobs quest' but I want some story around the quest. Even if it is just body parts for a stew, person wants revenge for the mobs eating their crops, or I need to do it to prove I'm tough enough to them. Sure maybe I don't read it every single time but if it wasn't there I'd be dissapointed. You need to at least try to sell me on the world and immersion though.Do you pay attention to text?It depends on my goals for the night when I log in. If I'm in a group, generally no I'll click through as fast as I can. If I'm soloing or not in a rush, then it makes a big difference and I'll read the text.As well, if it is a little 'single' quest then often I wont read it. If its a longer quest or quest line then I'll spend the time to read it as well.Does a dynamic quality to quests really spark your attention (IE, something changes in the world, at least to you, once its done)?Absolutely. EQ had the ring quest where the giants came and fought the dwarves and if you failed the town was dead for three days. I loved this. Sure it anoyed me every time someone failed and the town was empty but the fun outweighed the anoyance. Plus once I went and did the quest, I had hanging over my head the threat of failure and everyone knowing we failed cause the town was empty. But it doesn't need to be on a grand scale as that was either. I like it when the NPCs we are chatting with do something more than just say something. Have them move around and interacte with their environment. Imagine a quest where you get components to summon a demon for an NPC, he summons him, and then you have to kill the demon. Simple and standard. But if you actually see the guy wander around his lab preparing the spell, muttering about stuff, the demon appear in a protection circle, the NPC's pet cat come into the room and chase a rat across the circle, and then the demon breaks free...the quest is now at a whole different level and a whole lot more fun.Do you like humor in quests or would you rather quests remain serious?Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It really depends on the author who wrote the quest and how good a job they did with it. There is also the 'in game' humor vrs 'external reference' humor. Eternal references can be fun, but they shouldn't be over done. Under 1% of the quests should be these external reference ones.A few other thoughts....I don't like the quests where all you do is go talk to someone else right next to the quest giver. Across the zone, fine, but none of these trivial little quests. At least make it a step in a bigger quest.XP and AA balance of quests. The rewards for quests should be balanced better. Some simple quests where you just go talk to someone often seem to give more XP or AA than go kill X mobs then kill X more then kill X of those over there. If a quest is harder, is should give better rewards.More tradeskill quests. Not writs, I want quests to give me tradeskill stuff. How about a repeatable tradeskill quest to give you a rare for that tier? Craft me 100 of X items and you get a rare or something. Or give me more tradeskill stuff for my house.I don't mind the 'collect X drops quests'...except when I'm in a group and have to do it 5 more times for everyone else too. We each need 13 kolbold paws...ugh. It's not so bad when it is one update for the group. One update per person is rough.I dislike the quests that give rewards for all classes...but plate. Or have one of everything...but cloth.I have tons of old quest items in my inventory for quests I don't think I have anymore. If I delete the quest, delete the quests item too. I'm pretty sure I have these little clockwork robots in my inventory I got to do for a quest but don't have anymore. Or if the quest doesn't remove them, have the UI say 'You are not on this quest'. Please!I like longer quest lines and more complicated quests. The single non repeatable 'kill X mobs' aren't as interesting. Quest lines with the different types of quests are very good. A little running around, some killing, some collecting. All good.More 'group' quests. We have heroic dungeons, give us some heroic quests to go with them. Most heroic dungeons seem very light on quests. And make them hard. For group quests, how about more escort quests or some 'must keep mob X alive against waves of monsters...or defend point B against waves of monsters'. As well more group ring events. While they aren't technically quests, they fill the same void to me as a group quest. And for escort quests, have one update for the whole group. And since you often have to clear to get to the mobs, don't go out the same way you came in. Make it tough! Make sure mobs are in the way. Some of the Heritage quests also disapointed me. I just expected more interaction and dynamic things to happen. These were supposed to be the 'big quests'. That doesn't just mean fighting hard mobs. Thanks for reading,Fendaria

I'll take a quest that makes reading the quest dialogue worthwhile any day over the mind numbing "Go kill XX widget monsters."The ones that make you think about the story are the best, IMO.But yes, I enjoy them all.<==Recovering OCD quester.

I really like 'em all. If there were a preponderance of one type, questing would be very monotonous.
Regarding the types mentioned, I thought I'd provide some feedback. Kill Quests I like kill quests, but only ones that common updates. Rare updates are very frustrating. Sometimes you can kill dozens of mobs to get one rare update, and that's just not fun. One type of uncommon update I like particularly is the ones from RoK where the mobs actually drop as loot the NO-TRADE, NO-VALUE quest item... where you have to loot their corpse and you can see it. It feels a bit more substantial than just a "Oh, I'll say that you found an item this time." I also prefer common update scenarios to straight kill X mobs. It just seems more fun when there's something I'm actually looking for. Gather Quests I wouldn't want every quest to be a gather quest, but these can be fun and a break between the other types. Bauble Quests (use item on X mobs) I kinda like these quests. I mean it is a little more annoying to have to put a different item on my hotbar just for this quest (or else open my bags every time I need to use the item). But overall they can be really fun, especially when you are using the items to pacify or incapacitate mobs that would normally eat you for lunch (like in the Tradeskill Epic -- that was a lot of fun). Story/Diplomatic Quests Pass the Buck kinda quests are kinda like Gather quests. They can break up the monotony of doing straight kills, but if they were more than occasional, the amount of travel required for most of them starts to detract from the fun. Exploration Quests I view exploration quests as a quests to get up front in a zone so I can complete it while doing normal travel through a zone for other quests (Like Bootstrutter's). It's a really nice bonus when you travel somewhere for a quest and you also get a travel quest update unintentionally. But if you pick up Bootstrutters after you've already quested the zone out pretty well, it's an annoyance to complete. The timed exploration quests can be fun as well (JBoots), but sometimes the naming of locations on the map differs from the name given in the quest and it can be hard to complete them. Overall, I have liked most of the exploration quests. Other As far as other aspects. I usually click through most quests. Quests that seem particularly interesting or that have nice rewards, I will read. I LOVE humor in the quests. I just flat out crack up at some things. Everytime I go into Court of Coin and the guy waves his fist at me, I chuckle.

I tend to like questlines like Watch your steps in the TS and the Peacock Club. Quests that are dovetailed together to tell a story.(about the overland zones: Plaease return Mob groups to the zones. Heroic or Solo I don't care. But too many toons have encounter only abilities, designed to strike multiple targets, that are essentially worthless in such zones. Not to mention AOEs. If you are going to provide solo content, then provide interesting, meaningful and challenging solo content.)

If it's a solo quest, don't overwhelm classes that were never designed to handle group encounters. Don't make solo quests impossible for some classes, because they aren't "interesting" enough for a few other classes. I like most quests, but there's a few exceptions. I don't like rare updates, finding scarce varieties of mobs (especially ones with placeholders that tend to be hunted for extinction, requiring you to kill placeholders repeatedly to spawn the right mob type), and I don't like the use-the-bauble quests on mobs below X health. It can be a major pain to knock mobs to an exact percentage of health without killing them for some classes. I hate that enormously.

They may be the least creative, but I really prefer the kill X mobs quests. I see questing first as a source of exp, second as lore that I can enjoy. And of the quest types listed, killing is the only one that gets me exp both while I am doing the quest, and then more when I get my reward.

![]() I like combinations. Go to X and have to use something to talk to them, then they give a sub quest of kill/gather/location of ABC and then come back and advance the quest. The use item to klil them is interesting but they need spell out below what percent the items must be used IMO. The least favorites are like the quest in Fens where you have to have a specific faction that can't be reached doing the normal non repeatable questline for that faction. I still have not finished the Bellywhumper quest due to way under the faction required. I also agree with the earlier post about making old questlines not require raids anymore. At least make them X2's at white/yellow Con with them being one groupable at low green almost grey level. |
