I'm trying to decide which class to play and could use a little help... I typically play Paladin types as I tend to enjoy survivability (and the honor/valor) but I'm trying to play something different for a change of pace. I'll be playing on a PvE server and duoing with my fiance (who is considering Mystic) -- we'll probably not make it to end game.

I'm an experienced gamer so I'm not intimidated by a complex or twitchy class. To avoid being long winded I'll just make a list of what I like (or have liked in the past):

  • Swords
  • Melee
  • Bulky (or just cool looking) Armor
  • Survivability through versatility
  • Jack of all trades.
  • Tricks up my sleeve.
  • Being placed in a leadership role (MT in the past)

At the moment I'm considering

  • Berserker: For plate and dual swords (Can they dual wield effectively?)
  • Swashbuckler: Description sounded like a combat trickster.
  • Troub/Dirge: Jack-of-all trades, tricks, Melee, swords. I'll be duoing most of the time so will my "party buffs" be effective? Also, whats the core difference between the two pre-endgame?
  • Paladin: It's suited me in the past, but looking to try something new.
  • Other?

Any help would be appreciated and thanks for reading!

Try to play a Ratonga, any class will be fun then SMILEYPerhaps you can try a Shadowknight and your fiance can try a Defiler, if you don't like to fight for Lucan "Overlord" D'Lere you can always betray but then you will end up as a Paladin and Mystic. Squeek! SMILEY

I can only really comment on Dirge. They have swords and therefore are melee based. No real bulky armour but i quite liked the dirge eof set armour both legendary and fabled.Survivability through versatility is a definite, sword and board through AA lines is great for soloing combined with the dirges debuffs and lifetaps.  Their speed makes speedy getaways if things go south nice and easy and evac for when the brown stuff really hits the fan.  Lots of tricks up their sleeves with numerous buff layouts dependant upon who you're grouping with, rez and group rez at higher levels plus nice group savers like the AA skill magnetic note if some DPS class gets over enthusiastic and the tank loses it.  If you dont want sword and board you can always switch out to dual wield and be more a dps class.Leadership is more a personal quality more than class based if you ask me so thats all down to you.

Heh, Ratonga is a little to quirky for me. SMILEY I'm currently thinking Wood Elf, as it is nostalgic for me as I played an EQ1 Wood Elf Bard to 45 before Kunark. Then a new one to 43 Before Velious. Then a new one to 42 on Sullon Zek. I liked bard SMILEY but my friends couldn't stop rerolling or dragging me to other games SMILEY.

Glad to hear all of the above, I'm leaning towards Dirge atm, but would still like to hear from/about the other classes I had mentioned. I do have a question for you though:

If I 'spec' sword and board, does that prevent me from Dual Wielding effectively?

Nope not at all, actually if you take the STA line 4-4-8-8 You get great double attack plus bonuses for solo and when switching to dual wield youll still have 10% double attack.  All 1h weapons are DW now just some have mainhand requirements so just pick a good pairing.

Paladin or Shadowknight seem like they would be good classes for you.

Good choices.... and I might add one more!

I base this on your fiance's thought of a Mystic...  try a Swashbuckler for your self!  It has everything you listed, but not the plate armor.  Swashies can tank in a small group or duo with the healer... have many "tricks" up their sleeves..... honor and valor and STYLE... and kill swiftly.  THe Mystic has debuffs, heals, and if melee speced, good abilities that way...

Would be a fun team to play SMILEY

Just a thought....

1) I'd go guardian instead. SoE seem to love them, they got bether aggro, peole will rpefer them over a zerker usualy in a PuG and they can easely match zerker DPS vs single encounter. And well zerker whine a lot on their forums.

2) troub/ dirge aren,t jack of trade (they are not EQ1 bard). They are actualy rogues with lower self DPS but betther group buff. (while swash/brigand are more debuff orianted)

3) Their is no real jack of all trade in EQ2. its maybe bcuz the original everquest creator is working on vanguard (he created it also). VG is the real EQ2 and the EQ2 we are playing is another game. In fact SoE work really hard to make it different from everquest 1.

Their is 12class in EQ2 wich have been splited into 24class.

If the troub/ dirge would have been merged together to make a single clas called bard. You would had a jack of all trade.

CC is not as viable as it was in EQ1 this is alsoa  reason why many of use feel liek their is no utility beyong healing/ tanking.

 As for class choice.

1) everyone can look cool witht he apearence slot

2) Assassin, Brigand, Swashy can DW sword as well as Zekrer and guardian when theya ren,t tanking hard stuff.

3) in those assassin, brigand and swashy have the best survavibility. Brigand winning due to their various stuns. assassin beeing worst bcuz they solo fight from the front while most of their attack from the rear.

4) leadership role goes to anyone. unlike in EQ1 where your puller needed to elad your group/ raid.

P.S. I am brigand. I very rarely die, with my various stuns I can land all of my back/side attack while soloing. With all those stuns I can off-tank easely (and main tank b4 end game instance). My personal DPS is behind swashy/assassin one in a group. but my various debuff to mobs avoidance make the whole group/ raid DPS higher with me then with any of those.

(but the swashy make healing the MT easier).
