I played eq2 a bit a long time ago and have just decided to return to the game. But as what class?? Played Druid in wow and loved it as i like the combination of decent melee and spells. What should be my choice here?

well the closest thing would be to take a Warden and spec him towards melee fighting.

Note however unlike WoW we realy don't have a caster class who can alter his combat side on a whim )become tank or rogue etc)

you need to be more specific if you want to cast or melee =)

The wow druid is pretty different from any class here.  Many classes have spells and some melee ability.

I would suggest you take a look at the 3 priests that can specialize in melee for their dps.  This is the Warden (druid), Mystic (shaman), and Inquisitor (cleric).

Each of those 3 classes can heal well but they it in very different ways, druids use regenerative spells, shamans use wards, and clerics use reactive heals.  You'd be better off looking on the forums for more info on that.

As for dps between these 3 the inquisitor is the strongest, the other two have some other benefits in the melee line to make up for the inquisitors extra dps.

Ultimately you should keep in mind that every class in this game is useful and that as long as you like the concept of your class you will likely enjoy playing the class.

If you like to heal and do damage, I definitely suggest Inquisitor(but then I am a bit biased SMILEY).  With the ability to wear plate, do decent damage and yes-heal, it is a great class.  As you level up and get some AA points you can spec out a couple of the AA lines and get some great ability upgrades-100% melee crit and a heal crit boost and in groups they will love you as you can achieve a 50% unstifled melee speed boost for the group.

On the other hand as was mentioned, SK is a great class also-major DPS and lifetaps makes for great grouping or soloing.  My SK is lvl 37 now and is a blast to play.
