In the warlock Achievement tree, the upgrade to Gas Cloud confuses me.  I can understand increasing base dmg, but how does the radius of an encounter AoE get bigger?!  I thought it hit the encounter regardless of positioning.  Can someone pls clarify for me?

Yes, what it means is the radius is extended where you are the center of that radius.  Any enemies that are within that range will get hit, encompassing 360 degrees around you. You aren't actually targetting an enemy. agressiv

Is there a change in the spell with higher lvl versions?  My tooltip on Gas Cloud lvl 8 states:

Deals instant poison dmg to target enemy and surrounding encounter members, and leaving them stunned for a short duration.

It does list a radius of 10m though.  So would that indicate that an enemy of the encounter at 11m would not be inside the effect, and a non encounter mob(like a rat or something) 3m from the target would similarly not be effected?  Thats how it reads to me now.  Thanks for your help.

Gas cloud = Nebula

Poison Cloud = Chaostorm

The range increase is good for both, and for gas cloud it means that members of the encounter can stand farther apart and still be hit by your spell. As in; You are 15 meters away from your tank, and pull aggro on 1 of 3 mobs. You then cast gas cloud on that one mob. Without the AA extended range, your gas cloud only hits the mob hitting you. With the AA it hits all 3 mobs. If you are casting Gas cloud on the pull while soloing and the group of mobs are wandering around spread out, casting on the mob in the middle with the increased range of the AA means you can hit them all, when you would otherwise miss one or 2.

Yeah the first two posters were confusing gas cloud with a different spell. Think of gas cloud as you nuking your target, and then it infects any nearby encounter members. If two mobs are linked and very far apart, gas cloud will only hit the mob you have targeted. With the range enhancement, it can hit two enemies that are farther apart. Of course, most of the time linked mobs start out right next two each other, so the radius increase isn't a huge deal. In solo/group play, the radius increase is only good if you want to AE nuke a group right off the bat, but you want to start targeting a mob that's on the sides instead of in the middle. It's more useful in raids when you mobs often peel and run long distances from the tank, and also for split tank situations.

I hate the upgrade on poison cloud. Range upgrade on an AoE-type spell is not a good thing.

The radius gets so large that I am considering pulling poison cloud off my bar. The other day, I was in a hall leading up to a room, cast the poison cloud, and pulled a set of mobs in the room past the one we were entering.

It's rough for solo and group play in cramped quarters, but the increased range is necessary for raiding and not an issue in most solo/group grinding locations. I also like using it randomly in zones like unrest when the monotony puts me to sleep. I'd also reccomend getting a Sack of Marbles from Nek3 for use in the hedge maze of unrest if you like to keep your tanks on their toes.

It's still a smaller range than Rift (lvl65) even with max aa's in it, and a sizable portion of your dps.
