AAARGH!!!   I'm getting the following error after installing the echoes of faydwer dvd (which includes installing the original game and all other expansions on the dvds): "the options definition file failed to load. this generally indicates that your patch was corrupted for some reason. try a complete scan and if that doesn't help the you may need to reinstall." I've followed these instructions, and have done the complete file test, to no avail, and have also re-installed it 3 times, and keep getting this message everytime I try to start the game for the first time-  and everytime i reload the game after getting this message, the launcher starts downloading (what looks like) the entire game all over again. I've uninstalled the whole game, reinstalled it.  three times now. I've cleared up my startup files on my computer, turned my virus check off and even firewall to help, with no better results. I've sent an email off to support too, but thought someone here might have experienced a similar problem.

soooooo tired..... I tried it all again, even reinstalled to C: instead of my F: as i've heard eq2 likes c drive better. waited 4 hours for latest downloads. hit play. blank.... then the same error message.  I thought I would be angrier....I just felt kind of numb. i've been reading lots on these forums, and a lot of people who have bought the echoes dvd, like me, are experiencing similar problems. What error message is it showing?  Is there any chance you might be able to do a screen shot of it?

It was in the first message: "the options definition file failed to load. this generally indicates that your patch was corrupted for some reason. try a complete scan and if that doesn't help the you may need to reinstall." This just happens when I try to log into Test server after the recent patch. I can log onto the Unrest server with no problems. I deleted all my test server files, copied my other game folder files to test server folder and patched again. Still get the same error message.

I would really appreciate some help from the support guys.  thanks. i'm hesitant to just let it keep downloading the latest stuff again and again, as I paid $24 yesterday to add 5GB to my broadband limit....eq2 had downloaded the same stuff so many times that my broadband was all used up. please...

OMG!! I got it working. When I deleted the game some .dll files did not delete. I went into registry and deleted anything that had to do with EQ2. Then I went back to my folders and deleted any file that did not delete earlier.  Then I did a clean re-install not using any copied files. Took a while with the downloads but I can now get on the test server using my desktop!!! I think it was the registry things. I want to thank the person that suggested that!! *hugs* Geth

sigh.... mine is alas, still borked. everytime I load the game, it just goes back into loading all of the stuff again....the icon files....then the map of queynos etc....and this takes like 4 or 5 hours...(which just leads toe same error when I hit 'play&#39SMILEY so i just log out. poor widdle me. i'll try your idea gethani, but i don't get how it can work, as the eq2 files weren't on my computer when I first installed the original eq2 dvd...so i don't see why deleting them in the registry will make any difference now. sniff.

I'm going to try it again.   deleted any mentions of eq2 in the registry, and i've also disabled a couple of mentions of my AVG virus check in my system.  I had turned it off by removing it from my system startup, but it was still on.  hopefully this is the reason for the corrupt options definitions file. fingers crossed. 1hr 18 to go.....

ok.  The download finished, and the button 'play' was there, all shiny and ready to be pressed. Instead of pressing it straight away, and getting that same old error, I thought i'd exit and do a restart I restart, hit the eq2 icon, and guess what.  It does a quick scan, then goes back to loading the patch from icon_asd1 AAAAARRRRGGHHHH!!!! I'm getting seriously annoyed- what on earth is wrong with this patcher?? I would appreciate a response from TSR pretty soon.  It's been 4 days now.

by the, as turning off the 'read only' box, the main eq2 folder has read only checked as on, and i can't turn it off.  If i do, it just goes back to on when i look again. the files inside the folder however have 'read only' as off.

Sorry I wish I could be of more help. I had the same issue you did after downloading the patch on the test server, so it went over an already installed game.

Do you have either a software firewall or a hardware router?

I've been waiting for four days....please, could I have some sort of confirmation that something is being worked on from the TSR team? that would satisfy me for a while. Right now, i've spent $90 on the original everquest2 and $70 on the expansion 'echoes' and I can't even play the game!!! Very sorry to rant, but i'm starting to lose my patience. Others are having their queries responded to, that have not been waiting as long as I have.

Just a thought, but have you tried switching from US to EU servers? No idea if it makes any difference to the patcher, but I thought I'd ask.

Yes, I have.  It just downloads the patch content again, then does the error.

Given some more advice from friends about uninstalling virus scanners to help the launcher, i excitedly uninstalled AVG, checked in xp security....completely gone.   I even disabled my firewall, and then started the launcher again, to download the latest patch, starting with the mp3 files etc in order to maybe, finally, play the game I bought 4 days ago. it finished, and they 'play' buttom appeared again. baited breath..... ..... same error. blaaaarghh...... I await gareth and his band of merry men/ladies to help me out of my predicament.

Couple of things

1. can you detail out your system, processor, memory, hard drive, operating system, video, do you overclock aqnything in the system?

2. have you run a exhasutive(SP?) chkdsk on the drive? When was the last time you defraged the drive?

3. download memtest from http://www.memtest.org/ create a bootable cd rom of the application and run it

4. verify that the date and time is correct in your BIOS and in windows

Without posting your MSINFO and DXDIAG info its hard to help you. You do not need to post all the information from those reports. You are supposed to just post certain information from them. Just cut and paste into several different posts the sections that atre needed.
