"handcrafted" is made from common resources.  Mastercrafted is made from rare resources.  The pristine is the best form of each type.  In other words you can have pristine handcrafted and pristine mastercrafted.

Master-crafted is when its made with rare materials (like blackened iron, steel, feysteel, and whatever the other rare ores are SMILEY)

There's a good chart on EQ2Traders that shows you what "mastercrafted" items you can get made from what rares you find in each tier.

What to do with your rares

Also just generally handy, this guide to what harvest comes from where will show you what the common and rare harvest is for each type of node in each tier.

Crafters can buy recipe books for making "common" recipes from NPCs so every crafter should be able to make the pristine "common" stuff.  The recipes for making mastercrafted items are loot drops from mobs however, so the crafter will either need to get lucky out hunting, or buy them from other players via the broker.  The books for mastercrafted stuff are called "advanced", so for example a level 22 armorer would buy "armorer essentials volume 22" from an NPC, but would need to find "advanced armorer volume 22" from the broker or a monster.  Level 22 monsters drop (or have a chance to drop) the level 22 crafting books, level 23 monsters have a chance to drop the level 23 crafting books, etc.  Some of these books are harder to find than others so crafters can sometimes have a hard time getting certain mastercrafted recipes.
