Since last night, I have gotten an error during zoning.

The loading screen goes white, then one of two things happen.  Either a fatal error that shuts eq down or, once I am zoned, an error writing to the character ui file.

The yellow message box that shows your zone or area on the screen turns into yellow bars instead of text.  All menus have a white backround and yellow lettering.  Any time I do something after this happens, I get an error writing file message.  Cannot write to the character UI.ini file.

It happens randomly and if eq doesnt crash with a fatal error, a rebooting fixes it, till it happens again.

I have deleted the UI.ini files on the chance they are corrupted and will see if this problem reoccurs.

Post here if you have gotten these errors.

Something like this happened to me yesterday.I finished some quests with Kella, then /camped to character select.  When I logged in with Nimari, a few things -- like the popup for "can't see target," which was the first one I noticed -- were garbled bars instead of text.  An error showed up that told me there wsa a problem with Nim's *.ini file, and that my settings couldn't be saved.   All my UI windows popped back to default and then the game crashed.  Since I'd been logged in for a while and EQ2 is a memory hog, I rebooted my PC.  I haven't had any trouble since but I also haven't tried to play Nim. yet today, heh.

This happened to me yesterday as well while I was on Keekee. I had also been logged in for a long time. The pop up messages turned black/white garble. Then when I zoned, her loading screen turned into a black, yellow, red and white checkerboard that looked like a television broadcast testing screen. Then, I got the error that it couldn't write to the ui.ini file. I'm guessing this is a problem caused by leaving your toon logged in way too long. :smileysurprised:

Anyway, I logged out and rebooted. Haven't had the problem again.

Osen was getting the little-blocks-instead-of-letters-in-the-pop-up-messages also.  She always just logged and came back and it would clear.  But she did stay on one time and got the UI error writing message.  One of my alts got the error message, but he did not get the blocks-'stead-of-letters thing.

Had this happen once to me as well. From the way it behaved it looked a lot like something in the UI running out of resources, failing to allocate memory. This could happen during the process that writes things to file giving this message. Quite possible that this has nothing to do with the file itself. : More info. Shortly after this problem occured with a character I zoned to do a tour at the inn in East Freeport and my complete screen went white followed by this message in an unrecoverable error box: D:liveeq2frameworkcoreutilsrcFiller.cpp (1691): pfFile After which the program shut down.

Just got this error on Chii, in Nek Castle, in Elises Room.  Killed a Patchwork Soldier.  this is what the error says The file 'Test_Chii_eq2_unsettings.ini' could not be written to, your UI settings cannot be saved. I didn't do any ui changes.  I can't read the quest text in the chat boxes now.  It's all blacked out.  I can read mine, but not the npcs

Got it last night and again this morning.   What was happening was too many memory leaks lagging me fiercely before it happened.  Frostfell memory leaks?? or something else, I am not sure.

Ok, I said in the first post I would try deleting the character UI file.  I did this right after posting.  I havent had an error since then on that character.  Now, whether this actually cured it or I have just gotten lucky; I have no idea.
