(I'm posting this in both Ranger and Assassin forums.) I am a level 17 Wood Elf Predator, and I am pretty sure if I wanted to right now I could betray and become an Assassin rather than be a Ranger. I have looked over both ability skills on eq2player.com and I just can't decide. My question to Rangers is - do the arrow making abilities you get do you well enough or are you forced to fletch/buy arrows for anything worthwhile? Also, are you able to actually start attacking something with a bow and finish them off that way, being a true ranger, or are you forced at some point to melee if you want the battle to end within the hour?My question to Assassins is - How effective are all the stealth bonuses you get, do they have any incredible advantage over others, like a completely undetectable form? Do you get better melee and melee abilities as an assassin, and are there any other incredible advantages and coolnesses that come with being an Assassin that I can't read off a stat sheet?

well watching the damage i can do at my level still makes me smile. you will find that most scout achrtype mobs will be able to see through our sneaks however. i can honestly say that i love being an assassin and right now there isnt another class that i would rather be SMILEY

First of all id like to say that like you im a lvl 18 pred. With the bow..you cant solo and use it at the same time...This is because you have to be far from the mob to hit it with the bow. You cant be too close. SO, in turn you couldnt solo a mob with a bow unless you had a group. then you could sit back and rain arrows all day long. Even though most mobs can see through my "sneaks"... i figure it is because its only app2. If you get an adept invis skill, things change greatly. At level 18 i believe i got another Steath skill which at ap1 is better than sneak ap2.  I happen to think that assasin types look more interesting. Id much rather prefer being upclose and just causeing as much damage as i could. However I do love using the 2 bow skills i already have.  I use them when my melee skills are on the timer. Hopefully this post helped you out a little. Its my first post on these forums =D

I love being an assassin. Played quite a few classes over the years and I feel more at home with this class than any other but that's a lot of personal preference. Our stealth is really good, I think. You do need to upgrade it. Right now my best is probably Slip Away Adept 1. I got a new stealth skill last night but have not tried it out yet (lvl 31). But yeah, scout type mobs and mobs that are much higher level than me can see through it. But you can't have everything. SMILEY I don't find that it hampers me too much. Most crap I need to get by, I am successful in doing so.

At first I loved my Assassin....  great damage, fun specials... but as I neared the end of the long grind I realized there is nothing absolutley special about it.  Once you get into the groove its the same series of attacks everytime. Granted this the case with nearly every other proffession... but its more so as an [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot]master.  Dont get me wrong it will always be my proffession of choice... but I am having more fun with my 19 Enchanter then I am my assassin.  Crowd control is always dynamic and new.... With my tank Im able to move around and bring agro to the group or force my group to crawl not camp... and with my healer its similar to Enchanter as in things can shift and heals need to me mitigated all around.

With the Assassin, especially since 85% of the game plays Evercamp not Everquest, I sat in one spot made 5 macros... and 90% of the time fired em off mixing in some evades as I watched TV :smileyindifferent:.  For some people this is enjoyable even tolerable... but for me it forced me to take a much needed break from my main toon and find some enjoyment elsewhere.

i can say this is the most fun class i have played (my 4th toon and i see no reason to go back to or try anyother now) my DPS is nice! i can solo yellows, i have enough ranged power to attack from afar and kill with bows.  i recently proved this by soloing a double blue up mightygriffon in TS me being a 28 assasin at the time (note you can do this but it eats up a massive amount of arrows) for stealth i have no less than what 4 ways to go into stealth 3 i use all the time more stealth attacks than i can shake a stick at and since i chose alchy as my trade skill am having a great time figuring out which salves and poisons help out which groups the most. so which is better? i dunno i would say assasin is better cause im partial to it but as i seem to pick up alot of quests in antonica being closer to them would be nice -shrug-

The best way to determine the difference is this. Ranger is to an Assassin what a Paladin is to a Shadow Knight. As far as Scouts go Assassin's have the least amount of Utilies to lend to a group other than the basics Scout ablity of evac, disarm, and spinning HOs. Bards and Dirges offer the most Utilities and Brigands and Swashbucklers are the inbetween road. Don't get me wrong all scouts can do heavy damage but some tend to have more damaging abilites. For example grouping with Bards and Brigands I can honestly say a Bard buffing the group causes the entire group damage to go up. A Brigand's ruse is devastating. Still if I had to reroll my char I would do Assassin all over again. Why would I take this over a ranger even though they are the same thing? Because I would prefer to be next to the enemy with my blade in his skin instead of five feet away raining death upon it.

Use Ensnare.  You can effectively kite mobs this way, but it's a hideous waste of ammo.

[edit]

I enjoy playing my assassin.  The challenge is finding new ways to optimize dps.  Sure, you can come up with a few macros for the generic damage combos, however group encounters are more dynamic and require a some attention if you want to do more with your character.

Besides, it's pretty cool finishing off a red con'd target with 75% of your health and power left.

My disappointments really comes down to the fact...that I have to be good to be a ranger, theres no dark ranger, an assassin is not a ranger....and second of all that SOE has pretty much made bow imo a very very situational tool and makes the ranger rely on melee alot. I know bows are difficult, however It just seems to be that rangers are not overly that great a class IMO, sitting at 2nd spot in dps is bs, I think dps should be even across the board.

The ranger should be allowed to be evil as well =P Oh well.

I can say without a doubt that the Assassin is my favorite class.  I've played a number of other classes but theres no character I'd rather play then my assassin.  I love being able to go where ever I want and scout ahead.  We get bow skills that I just adore and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.  I love not having to stare at a chest until my hp's are full and full of dread having to open a chest.  I really like freeport even though Qeynos as about 3x as many quests and are always willing to give you good items for free.

Quest:  Bring me a cupcake, vanilla frosting, and fairy sprinkles and combine them in this box.
Reward: Nice sparkly dagger.
