He didn't break, he just decided to use the power that he had been sitting on (Throat Punch is heavenly) to heal himself to full before he came back into the arena where I could stun/mez/fear/stifle him.

Jez knows his Bruiser strategy that's for sure.

Mesmerise and fear are the keys to defeating this encounter.  Unfortunately the Champion often roams under fear outside the area of the arena - basically through the walls.  So it can be difficult to maintain a melee attack when the mob is feared.

Basically Intimidate (Mes) followed by Crushing Fury/Hundred Blows from behind.  Then Boast (fear) and continue attacks from behind on the fleeing mob.

As power falls I just maintain an Intimidate-Crushing Fury-Boast routine.  I suspect those with a 60 second timer on their self heal will find this encounter easier.  Near the end of the fight it gets close, for me at least.

I won my first two encounters and then lost the last because I forgot to turn of auto attack before I used Intimidate.

Basically the end of the fight is about buying time until your next self heal.

By comparison the Group Arena is far easier IMHO.

Finally got him @ lvl 48.

Was a bit easier with a 2 hander, a Lambent Imbued tunic, Ignore Agony, and a ruin imbued hex doll.

Although I was still basically out of power by time mob was 20-30% life... and as it was said above, turned into a "fear him until mend is ready again" type of fight.

I finally defeated the easy version at level 27!  He got me to 27% and had to heal twice.  Jeer and Intimidate were key.  Plus, I just ding'd 27 so I got Fierce Punch (decrease in attack by 2% and stuns), and Bob and Weave - can't thank these two spells enough.  Plus, Rapid Swings during Intimidate was a great relief.  The first time I tried him using these tactics, I never used Jeer.  Now that I did to bide time between heals - it paid off in a big way!

Used the tactics that Jez recommended.  Thank you so much!!!

I have all Adept I spells, except wild swing (App IV), FD (App IV), and Focus Strike (App I).  I'm going to upgrade my spell line as much as possible within the end of this week and try him again.  See how that goes.

I have lost at least two fights because my imbued leggings go off when one of DoT's hits me while he is Intimidated.  :smileymad:  I learned quickly to throw on my Squiggly leggings during this fight!

Good info here people. I'll have to try that Fear/Mez combo when I get home from work. Questions:

It seems that sometimes the champ will continue to cast while he is running around from Jeer. Is this normal or does an attack after Jeer cause him to start casting on me?

Also, I am fairly new to the Bruiser. Does attacking from behind increase damage with Rapid Swings line or does it increase chance to hit?

Thanks

It is normal for a mob to cast at you when he is jeered..have not figured out why though..

It increses your chance to hit.

Thanks

It's always been like that for whatever reason, very often when you use Boast/Abuse/Jeer/the training option, npcs will take one hit or cast one spell on you before running off. Or even walk a bit, stop and cast then run off. (Twilight zone music goes here)

NPCs and Players both have a ~180(*) degree Defensive Arc to the front in which they are allowed to use their Defensive skills such as Dodge, Block, and Parry(Riposte). If you hit from the flank, or rear you will bypass those checks. *It may not be a true 180 degree arc, but close enough.

I tried the Fear/Mez chaining and still ended up dying because he continued to cast on me. Even when I was able to get off 2 heals in the fight he still hit way too hard. (and my gear isn't weak either) Finally had to resort with mentoring lower levels. I continued to die until finally I mentored a level 27 (i am level 31) This trivialized the first rat mob and made everything else green and blue. I was able to fight the champ toe to toe for most of the fight mainly because thats the only way I could keep up with his damage. I used a couple Fears and Mezs in the fight and took him down. The final chest mob was trivialized and didn't spawn so I didn't get loot. Nevertheless I got my quest update and a glowing shard which is the only thing I wanted. SMILEY

Maybe I need to learn to play bruiser more because it doesn't seem right for me to have to mentor down that low. I dunno, but it's a good feeling knowing I can stop screwing around with that instance and do what it is i'm supposed to do, DPS.

Megatraum,

Don't be disparaged if you find the Pit Champion difficult - he is.  I have gone 2/2 with him so far.

I think I got complacent in my latter fights.

I mentor quite a lot and I am not sure how well our abilities scale down.  By that I mean I think a L50 Bruiser can take a L50 Pit Champion down better that a L25 Bruiser can take down a L25 Pit Champion.

Likewise if I didn't choose the L40 60 second self heal, it would be a lot tougher.

On a related note:

Anyone ever get a master chest drop off the solo arena, or anything particularly interesting in the loot table?

well.. as a 50 bruiser heres how i handled em SMILEY

started out with a slow from the hex doll, boast em soon as he gets outta the gate then just beat on em till it wears off then he starts to cast then i just slam a hammer fist on em then soon as boast gets to 15 seconds till recast i throw an intimidate em on and move back and wait for that to wear off then usaullay he starts to cast when that wears off so i hit em with crusher and another boast and heal/stun as needed.. usaually just use which ever stun is up atm SMILEY but interrupting those casts really helps in this fight

normal: me,3
             him, 2
tough: me, 2
           him, 0
very tough: me, 3
                   him, 2

real easy after ya kno what your doin, the very tough deaths i blame on lag btw SMILEY

Well it seems I am a real slacker.  I tried the solo arena twice. The last time I did it I got owned by the dwarf and the 2 slaves.  However the time before that I just started getting into it I wanted to experiment with the fear/mez thing.  So out comes yellowtooth.  Mezzed him and got behind him and wacked him good with the ability that hits him 4 times.  Now here is where I run into a problem I use Jeer and fear him and he promptly runs through the fence right into a pit guard and is killed!!!!.  Obviously this is not the champ but I assume he will act similar. How can I avoid this??? PS when this happens the instance is bugged.  You can not proceed with next battle and you can not leave the arena because you are in the midst of a fight.  The gnoll will not allow you to exit.

I've tried the fight using different strategies, just for my own entertainment.  At lvl 50, they seemed to follow a pattern: - Simple/Not-so-skilled Method: No Mez or Fear.  No tricky jumping behind to get a flank attack.  Basically approach the fight as if you were tanking for an XP group (minus the taunts heh).  Result:  Close fight, but you'll be lucky to win. - Add Mez:  Close fight, but it makes the difference in being able to mez and wait for you heal to pop again.  Don't blow mez or heals at the wrong time and you'll win. - Add Fear:  You should start to see a much bigger margin for error.  You should win easily. Bring some stat potions and healing potion too, if you'd like.  Oh, and a Royal Great Flail too SMILEY

RGF makes a huge difference.. went from being OOP and low health with Heirocrook  on the easy champ to schooling the medium champ with 40% power and hp left.  Haven't tried hard yet

edit: lol, just tried hard champ.. got it to 50% no prob all was going well, I feared it and the encounter broke. So I ran into the tunnel to FD, hoping it would reset the encounter.  Nope... Champ went nuts, jumped into the stands and started fighting spectators, they owned him fast. rofl

I was level 48, and took down a level 50 Arena Champion. The key, with all of that intimate/boast/using wild swing and taunt to get ho's off is.. Moving around. Don't stand there and wait for him to hit you. Straight up he'll tear you apart. Oh well, he did with me. I moved around some, like I was dueling in EQ1. Less hits on me, more time for me to get my self heal back up, and to boast him. And don't forget, when you boast him, throw things at him.

Fledgling Bruiser here - only level 25 with AQ armour and non-legendary Bo. No potions, no imbued items.

Beat the Champ first time on the 'easy' setting - using as many stuns and interrupts as possible and managing to get 2 Ignore Pains (App IV) off during the fight. Much easier than with my Level 50 monk.

Anyway, Owain 1       Pit Champ 0

Don't neglect potions during this fight. There are usually + 17 or 14  Agi, Str, and Sta potions on the market for 1 gp or less, which can make a world of difference in these close fights. Also, make sure you have Staggering Stance up before you go in (or on the mushroom pet, which I believe you get from winning this battle). This will also increase your avoidance and make things a lot more managable. Good luck!
