I'd like to calculate how protection value translates into block for my thread on avoidance mechanics, and would like the help of some plate tanks. Here's what I need from you:

1)Equip a shield equal to your level

2)open your persona window, and mouse over your avoidance stat. This should show your parry, defense, and block. I need to know your block

3)on your persona window, right next to toughness(NOT in the avoidance mouseover), is a stat called block chance. I need to know your block chance

4)Inspect your shield. It has a stat called "protection" on it. I need to know your protection

That's all I need to know! I would really appreciate it if some plate tanks wouldn't mind giving me some data points, I'd like to generate a graph that will show you how much base block you'll get from equipping a shield.

Data from clerics/scouts with bucklers would be welcome too!

Steel since you make such pretty graphs do you have the formula and graph to show Brawler block?

It's just their base block x (1+BlockChance).

Though when it comes to Deflection (or Parry/AGI/Defense) it's quite a bit more complicated.

I only have a few data points to compare that graph to, but it seems to match the data I have for my friend's shields, at least.

Ima yoink your formula Steelbadger to put in the avoidance thread. Let me know if thats not okay.

It's Minimum Deflection Chance x (1+ Blockchance/100)

Most brawlers that are specced properly will have 27 minimum deflection chance (what you called "base" block). Say a brawler has 50 block chance--your formula would predict 27*51=1377 block, in reality its 27*1.5=40.5 block. Even this formula isn't quite perfect, a lot of brawlers are reporting this equation to give us a value that's off by a few tenths of a percent, which seems to be related to our agility, but the difference is really very small.

Edit: forgot parenthesis in my equation.

I think one of my greatest joys in EQII is figuring out the mechanics of stuff.

No worries.

I've had it worked out for a while, I only took 5 or so data points cos they were lining up so neatly. Seems a fairly simple graph, hopefully not much I could have got wrong

So 50/100 is 50%, or 0.5.

And yeah, I'd heard brawlers Uncontested avoid wasn't quite adding up but it's really a fairly small difference.

Yeah, but you have to remember the audience that we're making this for. But in the interest of math integrity, I suppose I can just leave a footnote for those individuals that suck at math, heh.
