<DIV>Alright, I'm a 20 ranger and I found this on one of the trainers in Elddar Grove and scribed it.  I can summon the hawk but it will not attack or do anything besides fly around me.  Anyone figured this thing out?</DIV>

<DIV>Yep, it's a fluff spell.  It's made for fun.  A ranger with a hawk.  </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Running barefoot through the woods, bow in hand, chasing a deer.  Leaping over streams and splashing through puddles, hawk flying high overhead, leading you to your quarry.  Amazing!</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>How could that not be enough for you? <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>PS: Why is your name purple and your title "Scholar" ?  just curious</DIV><p>Message Edited by blitz on <span class=date_text>11-15-2004</span> <span class=time_text>03:30 PM</span>

<DIV>the hawk sucks, it doesn't do anything, it's JUST fluff. It doesn't attack, it doesn't aid you in any way, it doesn't add to anything except to the ubah factor. It impresses the hell outta n00bs till they find out it dont' do jack</DIV>

<DIV>I don't have a hawk yet although I have read this from someone who had one:  If you are stealthed and have your hawk up and go by a kos mob the hawk will get attacked (it acts as a group member).  I assume it will fight back and in effect tank?  This would in theory allow you to use your specials from behind before you get aggro while soloing.  Also would be able to get some special arrow shots off.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>If anyone has experienced this please post.</DIV>

would be nice if they could make it like a tracking buff or archery range maybe, but it doesnt bother me so much, i plan to get it for the cool factor 20% away from lvl 20 right now, back to soloing

<DIV>The pet should do SOMETHING, I mean give a bonus to something... attack something... I think it's just pointless to have a spell that does nothing but look good. </DIV>

<DIV>KK less its changed from beta there is a way to get your Hawk to attack, be warned this only ever worked for me around 30 percent of the times i tried it.</DIV> <DIV>Get your fun pet to follow you towards a mob. Try and position the hawk so that he is between you and the target, pull mob with stalk and hope to golly the mob hits your hawk first! This worked for me in EL and OW at lvl 28 in beta and he actually tanked ok and is a war type ( wild swing casting )! When hawks health got low i used large hitting attack to re take aggro and HO things down. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>( i also remeber going nuts that me pet wasnt working ! I didnt realise it was a fun spell!)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

As much as it would be enjoyable to have a pet that could attack, I must admit it would be rather unbalancing. Soloing would be oh too easy, and rangers would become the flavor of the week and then that's all you'd see.

<DIV>You have to be kidding me.  Your upset because the hawk doesnt do damage?  How much damage did your hawk do in EQ1?  Oh yeah that's right nada we didn't get one.  The fact that I can call a hawk to my side just for eyecandy is off the hook.  How cool is that and seperates us more from the other Scout classes like Rogue, bard.  Unless a rogue gets a pet rat or the bard gets a mime for a pet and I didn't see it. lol</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>If you dont like it dont buy it.  And as far as it doing damage who really cares.  If they remove it from the game it won't help ya damage wise will it nah, but then you'll be like I want my little hawk back heh.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Verikor</DIV> <DIV>20th Ranger - Guk</DIV> <DIV>Kerran </DIV>

<DIV>KK i have posted how to get your hawk to work, Again be warned its a fluff item. At lvl 28 he was lvl 27 and a war type. Now If we had a 27 lvl war pet with our dps at that lvl well as pointed out itd be VERY unbalanced. Try the Dodge in my previous post, it does work. Other than that leave our pet hawk alone! <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

<DIV>About  not getting the pet at level 20....</DIV> <DIV>At the level's you get 2 abilities, you get one when you level up to that lvl, and one halfway to next level just about. This happends to abilities before lvl 20 as well, so I'm not sure why you people thought of that.</DIV> <DIV>BUT, I'm not sure if this is the case with this hawk. I just leveled to 20 myself and only have 1 bubble of XP. But I will try to find out this actually, cause I'm not in a urge to try out the pet. Although how awesome it is, I'll just wait it out. Will try to get XP to see if it is true tonight though <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /></DIV>

I can't believe people are actually defending the hawk bug saying how cool it is to have a hawk that does nothing. You people are freaking crazy. Some of us don't give a frick about fluff, roleplaying, or impressing noobies. I want something that actually does something. I swear there are some people that will defend this game with their life no matter how buggy the issue is.

<DIV>Aye, would be cool if it had some effect like regen to power, bonus to tracking and/ or pathfinding.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>But every class get's a fluff skill like this it seem. Ranger's get this hawk that doesn't seem to do any, Conjuror's get an illusion fire elemental that looks awesome!, Paladin's and SK's I presume get a horse that does nothing much but look cool, some of the shaman and druid sub-classes get an feline form and bear form.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I'm sure all other classes have similar stuff as well, so I can see why our hawk might do nothing.</DIV>

<P>I think there should be a special ability that Rangers get at some point where the hawk can be used to distract, in the same fashion as Cheap Shot. Give it a recast timer of like 600 seconds or something.   Or a Tracking/Threat level buff or something.</P> <P>Meh, I am happy to have my hawk. I am the first Ranger on Everfrost to have it ^^ I got so many tells from people as I was running through Qeynos. And if you don't like the hawk, don't buy it. <DIV>I think they should turn us into beastlords, and have us be able to heal our pets, then lower our melee damage or something =)  That would be cooler. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The pet in my opinion WAS a waste of money, it isnt that hard to get 15 silver, but its something id want to spend on a new weapon or something.  </DIV> <DIV>It is a kickass fluff though, I want to get a horse, so I could have a horse AND the hawk..and they need to make him fly a little higher =P  He is like eating the ground basically...doesnt look good with me as a Kerran =P  </DIV> <DIV>I use him to take aggro when my group gets in trouble...hes like on autofollow for you, so he is always behind you =D  so you can u se him as a decoy then, never tried useing the sneak thing, it worked once, but then i got aggro back by all my kick-**ZOMG** damage attacks =D</DIV>

<DIV>I know what you mean, the hawk pet, in my mind, should at least give a bonus, like tracking would be roleplay enough.  I agree that it would overpower the ranger to let it attack, as we are not a pet class.  However... if we DID get a lion pet someday... I would disagree, as having a lion just stand there watching its master fight and perhaps die would be way uncool.  Lions like to fight.  O.o</DIV>

I swear there are some people that will defend this game with their life no matter how buggy the issue is.<BR> <HR> </BLOCKQUOTE> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>1)  You are laboring under the false impression that the fact that the hawk does not attack is a bug.  What evidence do you have for that?  What in the class description suggests that we are a "Creature Handler"?  What in our class description suggests that we are a summoner?  It describes us as being stealthy and able to do a lot of opportunistic damage, but nowhere does it even suggest that we are able to call the creatures of the field to our aid.  Is it because the pet interface has attack and guard commands that do not work?  That is just an indication that they chose not to create a separate interface for us or other classes that have "companion" animals and just reused the interface from the classes that can command their pet to attack.  So they got lazy and did not grey out the unused buttons and chose instead to have it say, "I cannot do that."  That does not mean it is a bug.  In fact, it is not a bug; it is by design.  Therefore, your characterization of being crazy for "defending the hawk bug" is incorrect.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>2)  Check the Prima guide.  You will find that not only we, but several classes get creatures that have no purpose other than the entertainment value.  In fact, you will find that the hawk spell in that guide has an "(E)" next to it indicating that it is an entertainment spell, not a combat art.  The fact that "Some of us don't give a frick about fluff" and that you "want something that actually does something" is, frankly, irrelative.  Is it your opinion that if you do not want it that no one else should get to have it either?  They are not going to unbalance the profession by giving us a pet that can be commanded to fight for us or even tank for us.  Get over the idea that it ever will.  Therefore, if you do not want the fluff, then do not buy it.  It is not like they are taking away a skill to give us that.  It is just there for the entertainment.  But this is an MMORPG, and the RPG stands for "Role Playing Game."  If you do not wish to roleplay, then do not.  But do not put down those who do wish to do so simply because it does not fit your play style.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>3)  Even if it is there only for the entertainment value, the hawk can be useful.  As has been mentioned elsewhere, the hawk can take the aggro.  Last night, I was out with a couple of friends, and I had my hawk out.  While in battle with our target, a spawn of 5 more enemies decided to join in unexpectedly.  We retreated.  The target we were fighting followed one of my companions, the five followed me.  I had taken quite a beating before breaking, so I was running for my life.  Eventually, I noticed that they were no longer following me but were attacking my hawk.  They killed him and then left me alone.  After I could call him again, I did, and another incident happened.  I had just finished a hard battle, and while I was recovering, a one of those granitescale lizards (level 20) came wandering over the hill and jumped me.  I had to run again.  Eventually, the lizard turned on my hawk which, since I had not engaged the lizard yet, allowed me to recoup enough health and power to go back and kill the beast.  Both my hawk and I survived this and I got credit for the kill.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>So, they are intended to be fluff.  It is okay that they are fluff even if they do not do anything.  Not every aspect of the game has to make you more ubber.  However, they can be helpful at times, as indicated above and as has been mentioned in other posts.  Therefore, stop the criticism, please.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>* Note *  Some of us have noted that the hawk can end up engaged in battle under certain circumstances.  Obviously, people will figure out ways to "arrange" these circumstances on a regular basis.  Since the hawk is intended as a companion, if people start developing effective techniques to get the hawk to tank for you and start posting those and tanking hawks become common place, you can bet that SOE will take steps to nerf it so that MoBs will <EM>never</EM> pull the aggro.  Therefore, if you want the hawk to be able to save your hide from time to time, I would suggest that you not advertize wasy to turn this pet into what would effectively be a "commandable" creature.</DIV>

<DIV>Well, I have read all the post and have not found any mention of the command menu that appears when you summon the hawk.  I get this menu all the time.  It's comprised of six small icons much like the ones we have on our hot key bars but smaller.  If i remember correctly, they are:  Stay, Follow me, Guard this place (something like that), Guard Me, Attack, and Dismiss.  The only thing is if you click on Attack or Guard, the hawk replies: "Sorry master, i can't do that." </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It seems to me that these other commands may become available as you and your hawk level up.  This command menu, that contains the six icons, are not there for fluff, but for a future purpose perhaps.  It seems like the only thing that makes sense. As it was said before by others, the hawk does protect you when you're on the run.  </DIV>

<DIV>Is this Hawk pet similar to the Gee WIz no use Lv 20 spells I have heard many classes get? Do you get a Pet Control panel for it? </DIV>

<DIV>You do get a pet control panel for it. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Yes it is just a flavor spell, basically to make you ranger look a bit cooler.  I for one am happy with it. It would be really unfair to get a pet that could attack.  Very cool, but very unfair.</DIV>

<DIV>The hawk does attack in battle but we can not command it to do so.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>It seems that AE from mobs do trigger this....or I belive but have no proof yet that large group heals also trigger him to fight.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>the hawk takes buffs like a group member...I can see the spell wrap around him...so my theory is this..He has to get on the hate list of the mob........some how........ I have tried pounce and that did not work.......there does not seem to be much ryme or reason as to when he will come to our aid.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>He has gave his life for me a couple times now....I have seen him battle quite a few times...and during those times I was in a group.......</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>I do not know if him not attacking on comand is a bug or not...just because the buttons are there does not mean they have a use. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>every ranger who has a hawk should keep him up offten and start watching what is going on when he does attack.  I have yet to get him to attack something when I have been alone...running has not done it, breaking encounter has not done it...pounce has not done it... it has been in group settings where he has come into the battle only.  I have yet to try beetles in TS like that one poster. I think we should all try out and record when he comes to our aid. </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>Last night while finishing up some quests in antonica I took on a pack of 6 wolves to knock out a quest. After polishing off the fifth one I found my Hawk tankin one of the wolves and ownin him. So I used this opportunity to go in to Hunt and Shadowblade him to death. This was my first experience since I had just bought him but he does fight.</DIV>

<DIV>For those looking to buy the spell for the hawk, the trainer that sell it is not one of the three in the circle in Elddar Grove.  He is actually in North Qeynos near the Elddar Grove exit.  Since there is contrary information on these boards and I actually bought it last night, I thought you might like to know.</DIV>
