Let's not use "Mr. Valk" if we could, please... I've had enough going on w/o the image of MTFL... wearing my wedding dress & holding bunch flowers at the church alter, in my head. (He's a bit furry, so bad, bad image.)

Unfortunately I've been down hard w/ a massive ear infection. I know sounds like something that makes a lil kid cranky, but to put the massive in context...details made Niko queasy, so I will spare the rest of you...but my balance, and ability to hear has been trashed... which has made it very hard to do much of anything, esp think/write.

MTFL & gnomelings are out of town for week, so I'm gonna rest up (hopefully find my misplaced flashdrive) and get myself on even ground again.

Wouldn't bother me any, I assure you.

There isn't a single bodily fluid I haven't been covered in, or had to clean, at some point in being a medic.

Get feeling better, valk.  I miss my favorite stalker. SMILEY

you do realise that it has been 2 months. 2 months with no sisters to keep me sane. I think that even without said thumb drive bwing relocated you should still have to story in your mind. So time to get cracking again.

/snorts her soda, through her nose all over the cpu screen. Tries not to cuss, while the tiny lil Coca-cola bubbles attack her nose, and she partially chokes while ROFLMAOs at Niko's statement.

/whipes nose, wincing. "Can't blame your lack of sanity on me, Dar-lynn... You were long gone before I ever even started stalking Ekuth's first thread, probably before I started playing EQ1."

And you have NO CLUE how my mind works....I'm totally RAM (random-access memory) based. I get one pass at most ideas & if it doesn't get record, idea is gone...poof. That & the next chapter is a cameo of one of my favs... I refuse to skip it, can't rewrite it, so I'm gonna have to find the flash & that's it.

I still think that you need to finsh this tale up. For the love of Tunare I need my tenbeers. Besides if I'm gunna run the tenbeers clan in my storyline you can atleast finish that part out and give me some closure.

/twitch

Dang it woman I need my fix

Since I foresee my self writting on the RotDH in a way to feed my muse's bloodlust during Ekuthh's absence. The tie in with the sisters should not go unnoticed by the newer members to Travlers. I mean we are a small nitch group of an ever shrinking community.

I stumbled onto this story quite by accident this morning... then spent most of my free day reading it. Awesome story. Hope to see more. SMILEY

I also sit in patient optimism for when this tale continues.

First off... let me make it very very clear... I do NOT intend to pick the story back up. There is always the 'never say never' thing, but I really do NOT want to write where the story is taking itself. I've also reallized the the most fitting end to a tale about military folks is to never really know what happened to them. I have easily hundreds of people I count as friends who I have 'misplaced' over the years... so Zazha and company are going into that catagory... folks you wonder about, and hope they are well, but never really know. Now with the legal disclaimer aside... I was doing cpu maintenace and stumbled across an old file. Apparently I had save this one chapter, but not the rest, before I lost the flash-drive. As this was a cameo for one of my favorite authors (though he seems to have left as well), I though I'd post it as the final chapter of The Sisters.

Right in the middle of Morning muster, an unliving ran into the camp, smashed into the Liege as he stood addressing us, and careened off, bounced off the griffin tower then fell into the river.

“Lrak Ftur’nal!” swore Lieutenant Kaneth as he attempted to wipe the gooey grime left from the collision, from his uniform. “Someone get me a cleaning rag and the rest of you, go fish Larry out of the river before the feeders get sick.”

As I handed over a couple of the armour polishing rags, I realized the liege had been literal in his cursing… ‘Lrak Fur’nal’ can euphemistically be translated as bear-spoor, and that was what was smeared on the officer’s armour.

Valiantly, the Liege attempted to reestablish order as I un-geared him and the others brought a soaked, agitated and ill-formed undead back into the camp and tried to restrain it.

“LARRY!” The undead stopped and focused on the officer. Once it was still, I could see that it was an arcane helper, but that it moved so badly because it somehow had its feet on backwards. “Were you hunting bears again?” The grim being began to get agitated again, starting to lurch in place, having trouble standing upright as it failed to balance on the oddly-aligned limbs. “LARRY! Stop it.” The helper refocused on the liege and calmed itself. “You did your job, we’ll go out and find him for you, but you need to ‘stay’ till we can bring him back to you.”

“You three, get the small stowage in the tower cleaned out, just set the gear off to the side and lock it in there. for you new transfers… meet Larry. His arcanist seems to have the worst luck with bears… unfortunately, Gnasch Kassabba and Larry can’t seem to avoid the cursed things. So for anyone who thought they could avoid watching Overlord’s Children by taking orders to the Nek…I hate to disappoint you, but you will be assisting and flat out rescuing the so-called adventures out here too.”

“As soon as the camp gets cleaned up, everyone get out on your assigned patrols. If there are bears in the area you are patrolling, keep an eye out for the necromancer. He’s probably injured or near-dead, do what you can to get him back to camp…” a loud banging started as the restrained Larry began a clumsy attempt to break out of its prison… “ so we can get Larry returned to his master immediately.”

“And yes, before you even bother to ask, one of the areas we pass will have a fair amount of bears, so watch for the necromancer.” We started out of the camp, my CommSpec in front, about 50 paces ahead of me.  While lighter on my feet then a heavy, I was trying to get use to not stepping on the layer of twigs that littered the Nek ground. Kazar instructed me to walk behind him. I was close enough to get in a fight quickly, if he needed my help, but far enough back that I wouldn’t startle a target before he had a chance to observe them.

Aside from the search and recover op for the missing necrologist, we were to observe the Thexian activity to the East of the base-camp. Periodically the Erudian would motion me up, and we would quickly converse in hand signs.

I have never heard a bard who made so little noise. Then again, every bard I knew was like Caraw or the Tenbeers clan…loud, happy, ready to riot, flirty as Jade Inn ‘dancer.’  Kazar was as still, dark and oppressive as Nek itself. It was no wonder they were called ‘Death-singers,’ I could feel the life leeching out of me just being near him.

Not to say a death-singer isn’t handy in a fight, as I found when we had to prune back a bit of the local plant-life. We stayed on the South-most path between the two rivers. Usually the path is fairly safe. The Militia has placed a bounty on certain Nek critters that adventuring citizens cull in effort to curry favor with the Militia. However, that day, it appeared the adventures had been hunting elsewhere.

Kazar motioned me forward again, and signed that he would conceal himself. I should lure a few of the animated plants to the middle of the road, then he would assist me in destroying them. We would need to clear a bit of the roadside as they had overgrown an area between the pathway and the den of a local bear variant.

I started slow, pulling just one of the treelings at a time to the road, trying to get a feel of how to attack them. It would be easy if I fought with weapons, a big swing from an axe seems like a pretty effective tactic. Striking in the trunk with my hands proved ineffective, but I found I could wait till they attacked, swinging their limbs to hit me, then I could catch the limb like I would catch a person in an armlock… just like dislocating a shoulder… only with more splinters.

As Kazar joined in, I realized the plants fought less aggressively. They still attacked, but it seemed they were slower and hit with less force when they did connect. If they had been truly living, I would have thought they had grown exhausted, like a sparing partner in a long fight.  Kazar maybe one morbid son of an Orc, but he know his ‘lrak ‘nal.’

It proved to be a very literal day… Kazar did know his ‘lrak ‘nal,’ ‘Ftur’ and otherwise.

After we had cleared the plants and a few of the more aggressive bears, Kazar was able to find a few of the beasts’ droppings.

“Cel” he motioned me closer. I approached wondering if I was to get training on bear digestions… little did I know. “Hold out you hand.” I did and was quite surprised when he started sniffing it. I was starting to wonder what kind of freak I was partnered with, when he explained. “You helped the Liege clean his armour, so the smell of the spoor is still on your hands. Sniff your hand, then the local sample.”

I can’t say I could tell much difference between the two smells… both stunk and I was disgusted that I had been in enough of a hurry to get on patrol that I had forgot to wash up. “I’m surprised you were smart enough not to wash, get the Nek smell on you to cover the city stink of your gear.”

‘Ah, sure, let’s pretend that’s why I smell like bear waste.

I tried to pay attention as he explained the diet habits of the mutated owl-bears we had just killed, carnivorous and also likely to feed on the large spiders in the area, so the spoor had a scent of rotten meat and acrid chemical smell, like the tang of an alchemist’s lab. My ‘sample’ had a ‘sweeter’ smell, indicating that creature ate more plant matter, berries and the like, maybe fish. ‘I guess if you are going to run around with ‘lrak ‘nal’ on your hands all day, it’s better to have the ‘sweet’ kind.

He pulled out a velum scrap with rough landmarks of the forest drawn on it. Showing where we had come, he indicated an area just north of where our patrol should end. “This is where the kodiaks make their dens. Armbreaker has the dens area proper, so we should head to here,” pointed to the edge of our patrol, “and make sure Larry’s necrologist didn’t get himself south of the dens.”

I followed the bard, trying my best to keep silent as we moved through the forest. ‘Zoffie had let me feel the pack-mind before, but it always surprises me how much the wolf’s spirit wants to fight for the body it inhabits. Even with the spirit partially controlling my actions, I still feel clumsy as I try to step lightly over the ground-cover, but the wolf wants me to run. It knows that Kazar is my liege, that he is running full speed, I must keep pace, I must stay with the pack leader. I start to smell the forest scent change. Sprinting along the river bank, I lift my hand for a quick sniff. ‘Yes, a new plant, our bears must have ate some.’

Kazar stopped just before the bridge. I stopped a step behind him, tracking along his line of sight. ‘There… on the path…’ I flashed the sign for “friendly trooper” at Kazar. I immediately added details to the report, “Ogre, Halasian, Human, death-stink, but all lived,” and finally indicated “our bears.” Using the wolf-spirit to aid my own sense of smell, the wind was a complete sit-rep of Armbreaker’s patrol.

We moved out on to the path, to be visible before the troopers crossed the bridge. The Halasian set the unconscious Human on the bridge and started signing to Kazar. The stink of mana-ozone, death, Lrak Ftur’nal rolled off the arcanist. He didn’t appear in great shape, but at least we should be able to get him back to camp and the clergy. Arm watched the North leg of the path and I the West, as Kazar softly sang a comforting song. That and the alchemist draught the others had already given the magi would allow them to safely transport him.

They moved back to camp with the necrologist slung over the tracker’s shoulder, and our report on the increased critters, to pass to the camp. Kazar and I turned northwest on the trail of the Thexians. As I reviewed the patrol so-far, one thought stood out the clearest, ‘Remember, add a few healing draughts to your patrol gear, never know when you’ll find some ‘High-Liege kid’ even out here.’
