Vegarlson Stones of Thudos

I have noticed that there are Stones of Thudos in the various Vegarlson zones. They seem to do some damage if you stand too close to them, and you can kill them. What I have not seen is any lore explaining what they are or why they're hostile, or if we should destroy them at all. Have I missed some font of lore?

It's Vegarlson's way of telling you you're not wanted, puny mortal! And they'll heal the inhabitants of the plane as well.
