MMOs have never been hard. They've just gotten less tedious and time-consuming over the years. You really want to claim that EQ1 was challenging? They didn't have scripts, every MOB was just a bag of hit points with some melee attacks and perhaps an AoE. Melee characters maybe had 1-3 buttons to press outside of autoattack, and casters could only memorize 8 spells simultaneously. Playing EQ1 didn't take any special amount of skill or system mastery, it was just a matter of slogging through the seemingly-endless grinding, being willing to spend 10+ hours at a time camping a single spawn, and dealing with the unnecessarily punishing mechanics. Basically, EQ1 wasn't hard, it was just packed with Fake Longevity to the point where many people lacked the patience to reach the end-game.

Which is as juicy a rationalization as I've read in some time. Kudos!

Maybe it would just be simpler to make an Overland Heroic version of every overland zone. From West Freeport one would have the option to zone to

Commonlands for Chumps

or

Heroic Commonlands

Bump every mob in the heroic version version up to appropriate strength. Give them all mini script-like abilities like SS trash.  Bring back the flying fish of death in Neriak the Dark: Heroic.

so your point is because your brother was in the air force and plays WoW the whole genre and all games in general since WoW didn't become shallow and uninteresting?

name 1 game that came out in the last 8 years that was deep, had good graphics and was fun to play. One that improved upon what was already there. eq2 improved on many things, alot of thought was put into this game and since RoK that unique game that eq2 was became more and more a clone of WoW. Look at this last RPG that R.A. Salvatore wrote the story for, WoW clone but offline. Warhammer online? WoW graphics and simplified DAOC gameplay. Rift, WoW clone with a few good ideas. Vanguard, WoW clone but at least no instances. Leage of Legends, WoW graphics. Secret World, single player overland content and instances, at least they tried something slightly different but it's a WoW clone at its core - was it 8 or 10 abilities max on the hotbar lol, swtor - WoW clone.eq2's social aspect was big, that was what made the game fun, your abilities helped your group you had to group to see content and you could group anywhere everything was one big dungeon with stories, now it's solo quest to max level because you can. boring dull tedious. and it's getting worse with each expansion. ok the reach quest was good and 90 minute lockouts, but that's because there is so little content.

idk if bringing back overland heroics would change anything it would probably only make powerleveling faster. but hey if it helps why not and while you're at it remove exp penalty in groups.

Everything was pretty much on except the Vanguard statement - Vanguard was several years in the making and several more behind schedule when it launched all borked and broken with alrge empty areas.  Loved the Hill giant and the blood mage though.  Still play from time to time but do the same with EQ1.

Your brother probably wouldn't have made the logical mistakes with the previous statement that you did. (Also, that "sentence" makes no sense.)

Playing WoW doesn't make you an imbecile kid, but WoW did help change the market shift toward making it attractive to promote (I wanted to say advertise, but that doesn't happen around here) your game to imbecile kids.

(Thanks to your brother for his service in any case. He likes a boring game, but still has my respect.)
