I'm guessing I missed the memo.   How do I stop getting the message in the title?

I know I'm not in a mail transaction, and haven't been for weeks.   I get this message sort of randomly, when zoning, reviving, or most anything that reinitializes something.  I get it on multiple characters, on multiple computers.

As a 2nd question, why does the message even exist?   Why bad thing might I be doing would merit me getting it ever?

Baffles me.  If the game knows you're not in a mail transaction, how is it so difficult not to display the message?

I get this exact same thing, generaly every time I zone with any character, it's an annoyance more than anything but it has been going on for a few weeks.

We've been asking for years for them to give us more information more quickly.

...and now we complain SMILEY

Been doing this since they allowed us to access mail boxes without being at a mailbox, so i think they created a bug by adding a feature.

Yes, I know.

It's happened long enough that I thought to see if it would go away on it's own, or if others had it and knew hot to turn it off.   Perhaps I'd  missed how to turn it off on some update notes.

You are all wrong. This has not been happening for years and it has nothing to do with accessing mail from the EQ2 menu.

This was a hastily prepared fix for folks who had problems  because of a bug that said you were in a mail transaction when you weren't.  It is annoying, but it solved a problem many folks were having. If this forum's search function was working I would provide a link to the original threads.

It's still bugged and it started when they added instant access for those that didn't want to use the maliboxes.  I didn't mind using a mailbox and hate getting spammed every tmie I zone.  Two more changes that further reduce my game immersion.

Regardless of why this message existed originally, it doesn't change the fact that it only started appearing for everyone when they added the ability to check your mail without a mailbox. Telling people that they're completely wrong, and one thing has nothing to do with the other is rather silly in light of that information. Trust me when I say this. A fix for an old bug can create a new bug later on down the line if anything relating to that fix is changed later on.

I put those type of messages in a tab away from my regularly viewed chat.   Now the message still occurs, but I don't see it unless I click on that tab to read something else.

You are not correct. Not "everyone" began seeing those messages after the change to view mail via the menu. I and many others were seeing this message well before that change was made. The message is not a bug, it is a bug fix for folks who were getting stuck in a bogus mail transaction a while back. I did not have the original bug and don't remember the exact problem caused by being stuck in a mail transaction.

My take:

1.  It's one line, typically when you zone.  It's not like we're getting inundated with spam.  I consider it more a quirk.

2.  Much of their codebase has probably passed the 10 year mark (figure it was under development for a few years before release).  Throughout that time it's been heavily modified by numerous programmers, often under tight deadlines, which means there was probably a strong incentive to do it fast rather then right. How many threads have you seen over the years demanding they release this or that thing NOW?  All those quick changes have a last bad effect on large codebases.

3.  It's been my unfortunate experience that codebases like that can turn into a real mess to work on (I have the dubious pleasure of dealing with one right now at work).   If it just shows a quirky one line message every now and then I'll be happy.  Hopefully it won't sieze up completely.

So I figure it's just a quirk of an aging code base.  The thing's getting old.  It shows.

I started seeing this bug after the mail service was changed to being able to read it anywhere.  I've never seen that bug before then.  Many others have said in chat they see it now all the time when they zone.

I agree, it was an odd way to fix the problem and it doesn't really affect game play. Its just wierd and annoying.

It might not be new with the new mail system, but it clearly has become more regular for more players since that time...likely because you have the ability to be in a mail transaction at any time now.

I can't say that I never saw it before the change. If I did, it was so random that I didn't notice or care enough to remember. Since the change, it pops up every single time I zone. It's a minor annoyance at best though...and I really hope that they have better things to work on. It's not going to stop me from joking about it with guildmates though.

It was someones 'quick fix' for a mail issue after the read your mail anywhere feature was introduced.

A few people were unable to read mail at all after this change, and the quick fix solved that problem but also started this message everytime you zone.

Has anyone has this pop up when zoning since the update Thursday, April 26? I sneaked in a fix but it didn't make the patch notes and some extra logging to help track it down if it is still happening.

If it has happened to you could you post the character name, server and approximate time it happened?

I'm not sure whether this was before or after when the patch hit Test but:

(1335480577)[Thu Apr 26 17:49:37 2012] You are currently not in a mail transaction.

Server: Test

Character: Ohoh Skedios

What time zone would that be, Hordolin? Just posting a time without where you live doesnt say much since the clock is based on your machine SMILEY

By golly I just checked zoning into and out of a dojo in S. Qeynos and then zoning from S. Qeynos to the Harbor and NO MESSAGE!  yeay!!!!!

Now, if only someone would look at the gamebreaking dungeon maker problem.

The message is also gone for me.

Now if someone can fix the message I get when logging in, "Unable to enter 'Guilds.6100': You do not have the required priviledges."

That looks like an invalid chat channel attempt, which is more to do with character UI settings (which includes chat channels) than anything on EQ2's end. In short, problem is on your end.

Nope. I've deleted the UI files and done a complete reinstall of the game with no joy.

I get it even if I do a /leaveall and then reboot.

I think it has something to do with having a character deleted and then restored.

Could you PM me your character name, server name? This is probably specific to your character. Has this character ever done a server transfer via token or merge?

EDIT:

Probably from the delete restore. Normally the "Unable to enter..." message is a problem with UI settings etc, but in this case, with a guild channel being specified, it is likely your character or something like that.

Not sure what he refers to but there is definitely a problem with certain rooms (especially corridors) not recognizing buffing objects when you place them. They don't get counted if you place them down in the room which can be really annoying if you want rougher mobs in them and can't buff them. I've had this happen in just about every dungeon. Also some dungeons get placed in the wrong categories. I have one Crushbone map placed in mistmoore, and the new desert themed one is also placed in the wrong one since it doesn't have a category of it's own...
