saw char named: Tillikum

if you're going to invest the time and money into playing this game, why is it so hard to come up with a non-offensive name?

Just to spite SOE, 3 friends and myself did /who (class) 10, all the way to 50, and came up with 136 names that violated name policy.  We were just waiting on a named to spawn.  I sent them all in one big petition.  I wanted to send them a message, and let them know that I pay 15 dollars, AND follow the rules.  These people have to do so as well.

Yeah there were lots of stupid names a couple weeks ago like Deathknight, askjd and so on.. Now there's less of these names, but still some. What i saw was this whole group named like n00bs: Sunshinefighter, Rainbow, Greenleaf, GodofWizard... God this annoys me. All of those were on lvl 27 and was grouped.. Dunno know what goes in those heads, but those names just suck. Greenleaf isnt that bad, but still... People who doesnt have the imagination to invent name should just use the gen. Names like many of you before me presented just suck. Though i havent petitioned any names so far, but almost have some of 'em. Oh i did see Drizz one day in FP. Though it isnt excatly the name, but its intended as close as possible. I did see Zifnab once. Havent seen after that.. Ok this post is getting worse by every word SMILEY All of those names were on Lavastorm server. Yeah... over and out.

Ya know whats even more sad than those names? All you whiney c*nts took the time to post on the subject. Sorry but even as unoriginal as Human, XYZ, etc... may be whining about it is even more unoriginal imo. WHY? Because certian people have to complain about something its just their nature and for there to be a 7 page thread about how you dislike soandso's name is just pretty lame!

My main's name is Mierin Eronaile.

Only 1 person (other than my friends) recognized where the name came from, as the name is fairly obscure, but the charcter from the story isn't.

Mierin Eronaile was Lanfear's real name from Wheel of Time.  My character is a betrayer...I thought it was fitting :smileyhappy:

It's not really "tattling" to /petition names that are against the policy. We all agree to the name policy, finding a sneaky way to get your name through it doesn't make you cool and it doesn't make it funny. I hate seeing awful names like "XxxangelxxX" "Endosmoke" "Bigpimpin" "Iamrobot" "Iamcomputer" and the slew of LOTR rip offs, etc. The same goes for any game though - City of Heroes was filled with knock offs (and look what happened to them SMILEY). There's nothing wrong with reporting them over it - they're the one in violation, not you. There's no real way for the guides/GMs to police every single name on a constant basis unless they queued up every name/surname coming through to be manually approved. (read - long waits on character creation or picking a last name) Same goes for guild names though, there's a lot of them that don't fit into the roleplay or even name policy either. Other than /petitioning the people, the only other thing really I can do is /ignore them (and that list is getting long) and just not group with them.. Definite /agree to the poster who said "stupid names, stupid people".

I created a kerra alt named Sirmeowmixalot just to test something, but I promptly deleted him--my normal names are all RP friendly. I'm all for RP names, but I find many of the silly names very ammusing and I don't understand the people who get off on petitioning other players names. Comming from other MMOs (and still playing them), I've noticed that the EQ community has a large amount of fun police who seem to delight in petitioning other players for minor infractions. Try to relax a bit and be more tolerent of others; everyone's playstyle is different.I'm sorry, but seeing a name like "Bilbo Bagpipes" is no more ruinous to the immersion of the game then seeing names float above everyone's head is or using a keyboard is. You might as well /petition people everytime they say "ding," "lol," "k," or "add" because this is a form of leet speak that has zero basis in the popular fantasy worlds that EQ is based on. Remember, no matter how badly you think seeing a name you don't like will effect your gameplay, petitioning someone and forcing them to change their name affects their game play much more.

OMG I can't believe this thread is still going. Don't you people have anything better to do...like actually PLAYING? (and before you ask...no I don't have anything better to do myself, i'm at work with nothing going on and I can't play right now)What kills me the most about this thread is the snap judgements you people make about characters with silly names. You automatically assume he/she is an "idiot", "stupid", "rude" without even bothering to get to know them. Someone above mentioned Drizz on the the Lavastorm server, he's got the whole thing going, Dark Elf Predator, betrayed to Qeynos and on his way to Ranger...well guess what, I've grouped with him and not only is he a decent player but he's a nice guy to boot. One of my friends...SirSmashalot, he's a good guy and a decent player he just doesn't take the game so seriously or get his panties in a twist over some silly name. Another one... PhatFreddy, decent player and individual. Yet you freaks would castrate anyone of those three over a stupid character name and yet ignore the dweeb with an "appropriate name" get away with being a rude jerk who can't play worth a [expletive ninja'd by Faarbot]. You people seriously have your priorities screwed up, get a life, get over it and go outside and take in some sunshine once and awhile. It's a freakin game not a career.Deshnok - 21 Ratonga Warden

The best name violation I ever saw was in DAOC: "Muck Fythic" .... I wonder if someone will do an EQ2 variant.

I'm at work, too. So, like you: No, I don't have anything better to do than complain about other people. Kinda like what you're doing right now.Back to the subject:Saw my old friend "Ummm" again. Now he has a last name: "Errr" Plus he has a buddy with him! Name: "Yeah Right"New stupid name I saw: "Oldfart Longtime."I just gotta start to petition these things.

Lame kinda like how someone takes the time to read the thread and then respond negatively to it, calling others "lame"? Like the time it took to write the above whiney post?Like that? The trouble I've found when I've been unfortunate enough to get into a group with one of these filter-dodgers is that they don't take the game seriously, they often put the group into a situation that someone paying attention wouldn't do and generally make the game less pleasant to play and distract from the quality of the experience.Yep..and before you say it: Now that I've come to that conclusion I avoid groups where members have offensive or inane names. And I'm not referencing the less-creative variety (like some mentioned earlier; e.g. "Greenleaf") but the variety that actually took the time to be offensive and disruptive like "Ummm" and "Oldfart". Save those names for the PlayStation2 forums, kids.

I went thorugh my screenshots and saw a few more funny names:FluffytomahawkHildalgoFelatoa huge male barbarian named Analpoundera green ogre named Hulksmasha ratonga named Squeakya half elf named DarkelffEverquest, like all other games, has a naming policy so they can deal with legitimately problematic names, not so they can micromanage every character's name choice. I'm all for enforcing the naming policy on racist/sexist/homophobic/vulgar names, but just because a name is funny doesn't make it bad. Even SOE sometimes uses silly names--look at "Sergeant Quackers," the NPC duck in Queynos Harbot that leads a flock of ducks around in formation. That is far more distracting then seeing a ratonga named "Squeaky."Think of the naming policy like the spead limit--we need it to keep people from going 120 mph, but that doesn't mean that police should be dogmatic about it and write you a ticket if you go 66 in a 65 zone.
