![]() Yeah... but realistically should we be able to lift 2000 weight? I mean I admit it's handy but carrying 2000 lbs and not even being encumbered seems extreme to me... even for fantasy... for a super hero game... sure... but for this genre it seems outta whack. Using 1 thing that is a bit whacked to justify another one doesn't really do it for me.I mean you guys can like it and all... and I do have my little light-saber thing as a weap... but that doesn't mean we haven't tipped into WoW graphics to match the WoW mechanics that have been leaking into the game for over a year now. |

![]() I'm glad I can still enjoy sword graphics without overanalyzing the impact it may have on my perception of fantasy games. Message Edited by Renzai on 12-01-2006 10:49 AM

![]() I actually don't find it looks all that impractical or unreallistic at all, assuming we accept the excistence of Ogre-type humanoids. It would not be practical for a human, nor would it be wielded using the same form as a standard two-handed sword, but I could see it being used by an Ogre or Bugbear quite easily. Let's look at the properties of the weapon. It's obviously a heavy weapon, and likely has a great deal of weight near the end of the blade. It's also a single-edged sword, with a curved blade similar to a katana or scimitar. It's clearly not a weapon conducive to a lengthy finesse-style fight, but how would it work for a brute-force approach used by a humanoid much bigger and stronger than any living human? I would picture a fighting style that opens with the sword being held vertically, either overhead or at the shoulder. Strikes would be either on a downward plane letting gravity assist the wielder, or letting the blade dip horrizontally and exploding into a strike using quick hip rotation to generate force. The follow through would lead to a slow recovery, so the fighting style would rely on forcing opponents off-balance or killing them quickly. Also, with the momentum generated by the sword, the curved shape of the blade should be extremely effective at splitting a wooden shield or slicing through armour. So while an elven ranger could avoid the strike quite easily, a typical soldier in chainmail with a broadsword and shield may have a difficult time defending against such an attack. Of course, this weapons would not be particularly practical for defending, but the fighting style would be about using size and reach to keep distance between the attacker and his opponent, and using force to keep the opponent off balance and kill swiftly. It doesn't have to be an ideal weapon to be realistic - after all, we're talking about blades designed by Ogres and Orcs - it just needs to kill.

I love the detail on many of the weapons in this game, that sword is pretty badass... wish they got that creative with plate armor.

That's a VERY lovely sword graphic! :smileyvery-happy:As for its viability in combat, let me explain something to all the nay-sayers out here. Swords are made to be used. In fact, your typical greatsword - roughly as long as the average human is tall - weighs in just slightly over six pounds. The only thing stopping someone from wielding it with one hand is the center of balance requiring a large grip. Even then, someone with large hands (i.e. an ogre) could easily get around this through size and sheer brute force. So, I think it's rather silly the kinda stigma these lovely weapons get from people who scream 'realism' at the top of their lungs when they have absolutely no idea as to what 'realistic' is. *Sigh*

I'm sure I am not alone in enjoying items that look "different" than the standard longsword. So for that...I say kudos !

![]() right now im laughing at you all when you say the sword looks....."unrealistic". you really dont see ogres walking around in our world either which is even more unrealistic. so everone just cool it, and for yalls info this is a "fanstasy" game. and if u dont like it go play something else cuz no one wants to hear you complain. because if you dont like the game you need to realize that there is no point in trying to convince everyone else that it "sucks" and that "SOE is stupid".
wow finally got that out |
