Character Traits and Mercs

After going through page after page of every forum I could find, I decided to finally post some questions. Keep in mind this will be my first real character. (I've had this account since release, but I went back to EQ1 after a week) I want my Necro to be able solo/molo as much content as possible.

I take it that Character Traits and Necromancer Training is a one shot deal with no respecs. If anyone could give me some tips or even a step by step rundown of how to pick these, that would be amazing. I'd like to do it right the first time.

When should I start using a mercenary and which one is best for lvling, running dungeons, and any other solo situations?

When should I start worrying about upgrading my spells?

Any help would be appreciated and feel free to recommend any other necro specific tips or links to info. I am having a hard time finding up to date information, but it still isn't as bad as it was getting back into EQ1 last year. lol
