This is an amazing charity, very close to me and I hadn't seen much announcing this. It sounds very cool and St. Judes is a very worthwhile charity.

Cancer survival rates since St. Judes opened:

FACT: Eighty-four cents of every dollar received by St. Jude goes directly to research and treatment.

FACT:

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization.

FACT:
All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay. St. Jude covers all costs of treatment at St. Jude beyond those reimbursed by third-party insurers, and total costs at St. Jude when no insurance is available. St. Jude also provides assistance with transportation costs and local living expenses during treatments as found on their website.

Kate- Northeast Central Region
6 years old
Intrinsic Brain Stem Glioma

After years of trying to have children, Colleen and Brian were excited to learn they were having twins. Their life became a happy whirlwind of cartoons and play dates—and then their world turned upside-down.

"Kate was having headaches that were very alarming," says Colleen. "She would cry and scream of pain, and then she would be okay." The doctor conducted tests but found nothing. When the headaches became more severe and frequent, Colleen asked that Kate undergo an MRI. "I knew at that point it wasn't good," she says. Kate's doctors diagnosed brain stem glioma, and held out little hope for her.

They found St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on Christmas Eve, which is why Colleen calls the hospital "a gift from God." She sent an e-mail about Kate's condition and titled it "Desperate for Help." A St. Jude doctor called on Christmas Day and arranged to have the family flown to Memphis two days later. "They really took care of us," says a grateful Colleen.

Expecting sadness at St. Jude, Colleen and Brian instead found joy. "This is an amazing place for kids," says Colleen. "It's fun and vibrant. Kids like it here." They also found doctors who were committed to helping Kate. She underwent 33 treatments of radiation targeted directly at her cancer cells, a St. Jude innovation that helps preserve quality of life in brain tumor patients. They also put her on an investigational drug unavailable in other hospitals. "You're able to give your child the best care, everything that she needs," says Colleen.

Back home now, Kate visits the hospital monthly for follow-up treatment. She loves her anesthesiologist Dr. Bikhazi, who gives her hugs and calls her "Kate the Great!" "We've met so many wonderful people here," says Colleen. "You start to care about the other families and what will happen to them. There's so much hope here." Kate says that she wants to be a St. Jude doctor when she grows up. Colleen and Brian—with the help of St. Jude—will move heaven and earth to see that she gets that chance.
