question about EQ2 and Steam

You can buy the game there, get your code and that sort of thing but the patching is done by SOE. All you get is the game download, then SOE patches it. You log in via SOE as usual.

That is correct.  I believe the Steam download will simply install the station launcher and add the account key to your account.
