![]() I need to roll a tank to play with a group of friends. I want to play a monk well just cause monks are cool. The thing is my friend has some sort of hint book and it says that the monk CAN perform the roll as a tank but is a hybrid damage dealer. It says at high levels, a more true tank like paladin is a necessity to tank for high level mobs. Is this a bunch of bs? I just wanted to know how you guys think your monks stack up to the other tanks in the game.

Thats ok, I understand that people here will have a slight bias tward their class and I am taking that into account. I know I should play what would be fun for me, but humor me please.

![]() Gage: Step away from the reply button... it's not worth it man! :smileytongue: Hint to original poster: Try reading some threads in the monk forum. Questions like this have been posted MANY times. Besides, if you want to be a monk, you might as well learn a bit about this community and get some nice tips while you're at it. Short answer: Monks are tanks, first and foremost. Longer Answer: Our damage dealing ability is not on par with scouts and mages, but it is quite respectable when that's our only job. However, to be a good tank we sacrifice damage output in order to control aggro better and increase defense. (buffs, taunts, defensive stances, etc.) Edit: Oh and to directly answer one of your questions, yes they stack up quite well vs. plate tanks. The only real difference lies in skill sets. Monk's fortes are: Damage, Self Buff, Multiple Damage Types, and Interruption. Not necessarily in that order. Message Edited by RadricTycho on 01-11-2005 01:16 PM |

ok will do thanks I have been reading the posts on these boards. Most of what I have read is that the monk class can tank just as well as the others with deflection agility abilities and can do more damage than most tanks and they seem to have some good dots as well. |

Yeah I think this is the one to go with for sure since me and my friends only make a group of four. I picked a wood elf he looks cool with a giant tat on his face.
Thanks for the help

![]() Monks are fine, they can do the job as well as any other, course if your healing friend is going to be a shammy then even better. If you are a small group like only 3 or 4 of you the extra damage you do as a monk instead of a pally or other plate tanks will be a big help too.

I have a 21 Monk and a 17 Crusader... I can tell you without hesitation that the monk is WAY more fun to play and can tank just as well if not better.I duo with my wife who generally plays the healer role... She has a 21 Warden and a 16 Cleric. In most battles we have found that the Warden/Monk combo works best for our way of playing than the Cleric/Crusader one does. It is more of a subjective thing but the Monk seems to be able to kill faster and take less of a beating. Mind you this is usually fighting groups of greens or blues no ^^ mobs here. The Crusader is a nice meat shield and he has much higher AC and HP but the actual battles just seem to last longer and they just don't seem as spirited. I often scroll back to third person view to watch the Monk fight, and I have had several other players stop to watch us fight and comment on the 'Nice Moves' of the Monk. Playing the Cusader I find I only scroll back to third person view to keep an eye on multiple mobs to ensure I have the aggro.Besides.. it is sooo much fun to FD around other players.. I can't tell you how many times people have tried healing/rezing me because they dont know what FD is...
