I dumped my Ranger - main for 6 years b/c of the screw over SOE gave us in SF. Came back and am having a ton of fun playing and SK and leading groups. SO much easier to get the quest updates you need when you are the tank rather than a tag along DPS (but that is besides the story)

Right now I have a combo of SF T2 and TSO T2. My mit is 65%, my avoid is 55%. However, my crit mit is horrible 15% and I think that is one of my biggest problems right now. Also, I don't have my epic since I can't solo it yet with my gear at 90.

What are the zones I should be running and what gear should I be looking for. Mainly, armor and a weapon. Right now I am using JoJo's which I don't like very much.

Thanks for the advice.

Are you planning on raiding with him? If no, your mit/avoid/crit mit are fine really. Your AA choices (and amount of them) will make the largest difference imo.

There are a few good instance pieces around, molded infernium helm, ydalium bloodmetal greaves, your epic/enervated sword...there are tons of decent charms...get your new legendary items yellow adorned (if they have the slot for it), get your regular white adorns....hop into a WOE raid and get your old T2 updraded to T3 in the meantime too ( if you aren't finding anything better).

not planning on raiding. Did that with my ranger and got burned out. What I am missing are crit mit pieces? Where are they in SF? Should I be worried about crit mit running SF instances. I have tanked Reasearch Halls successfully in my current make-up and I think that is a moderate zone, correct? How much crit mit do I need to eventually tank the vigilant zones?

I can honestly say.. I have no idea what gear you should be seeking.

I'm only wearing one piece of level 90 armor (the crafted T2 shoulders), and have tanked every heroic instance in SF.  When I look at other sets such as the rest of the legendary SF gear and the battlegrounds gear, I see better resists and some interesting procs, but much worse mitigation due to the loss of the T3 WoE set bonuses.  It may be that the new sets would perform better, but so far I've been unwilling to put the work in to obtain them and risk that they won't.

It's been a very confusing expansion.

The SF jewelry, on the other hand, is amazing.  I got a wrist item off Perah'Celsis that has inspired me to start collecting Stonewill procs.  It's now about 50% of my self-heals, with Reaver a distant second.  The damage procs and potency on a lot of the other jewelry has been a major upgrade on what I had from TSO, so that's where I've been focusing my efforts.

I hesitated to upgrade my T3 WoE gear also but when I started getting comparable Mitigation Increase stuff I did upgrade. Then I noticed that my mitigation numbers was a bit lower but my mitigation % was much hogher. The T3 WoE gear is level 80 and the new stuff is level 90 so you get more benefit from it.

At 80 I was 70%+ mitigation solo. In the same gear at 90 I was ~62% Mitigation solo. In level 90 gear I'm back up to 68% solo but I made some dps focused choices for my Guardian.

When I would swap out an 80 WoE armor piece for a legendary 90 item, dropping below a set-piece buff limit.. it would seemingly cancel out the gains in mitigation from wearing even level armor.  It seemed like a lot of work just to stay even from gear I've been wearing for awhile, but perhaps I should revisit the decision.  I can certainly find a level 90 forearm piece to replace the T4 item from the one-groupable named in ToMC, it isn't contributing anything to my mitigation beyond its direct value.

I do, however, always test gear with my regular full group, rather than solo.  Solo might be more helpful for forum comparisons, but I like to know what it's going to be when I'm really getting hit.

Mitigation on higher level gear provides more benefit than on lower level gear. They even spell this out in that recent dev post about combat mechanics.  I actually wore my KoS class set well into my 80s due to not finding anything new but eventually I had to start giving up pices for higher level stuff. I did not notice any losses from not having the set bonus.

They 'spell this out'?  I haven't seen the details.. just generalities similar to what you noted.

I tested it one more time with our group tonight in Abandoned Labs and yet again.. losing the 5-piece set bonus from WoE in exchange for level 90 legendary lowered my mitigation percentage.   Swapping out the TSO T4 bracers for level 90 legendary lowered my mitigation percentage.

I'd love to see the formula.

Here in this threads is what you are looking for:http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?start=30&topic_id=481259

Here is the quote

"Does the level of my armor matter?"

  • Yes. Resists and Mitigation is 'worth more' on a higher level item. If an item is level 80 with 500 mitigation, a level 90 item with the same mitigation will provide a bigger damage reduction. We are looking into making this more intuitive.
You lose mitigation as a raw number in your personal window but your level 90 armor mit is better than your level 80.

No, that's the same general description already mentioned in this thread.

Higher Tier gear has always provided a magical protection over lower tier gear.

IF

"Does the level of my armor matter?"

  • Yes. Resists and Mitigation is 'worth more' on a higher level item.
Doesn't tell you that then I don't know what will.

Thats the thing though, the previous tier armor had additional bonuses like mitigation increase and already had a pretty nice chunk of mit. The odds of finding a piece with the exact same mit on it is unlikely, and for that reason it's left up to "get it and find out" but that would likely be a waste of marks.

'Worth more' but how much more is the real question being asked.

Deleted, because the previous poster stated the true issue quite accurately.
