In a Zam interview about the new LoN accessed EQ2 instance, it was mentioned that people should keep their eyes open around Halloween because mobs could be dropping Void Shards.

Has this ever been clarified yet?  Is there a specific time frame window?  Will these shards be body drops or chest drops?  Are only certain zones (overland and instanced) going to drop these bonus shards?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I got the following email today from SOE (I am told it is also in the MOTD);

Kick off the Halloween weekend with boosted void shard drops all over Norrath!

Increased void shard drops begin Friday, October 30th at 2:00 PM PDT and continue until 10:00 AM PDT Monday November 2nd.

Anyone know how this will work?

I'm quite interested in how this will work aswell. What lvl mobs will they drop off? what are the odds of them dropping? what zones will they drop in?

The /motd just says:

The Nights of the Dead continues to invade Norrath as void shards begin to drop everywhere!  From 2pm PDT on Friday October 30th until 10am PST on November 2nd, void shards will have a chance to drop in random chests all across Norrath

Now whether this means actually "anywhere", or just additional in areas that already drop shards, who knows SMILEY.  I guess we'll find out in a few hours!

For the heck of it tried mentoring down to 20 and wiped out a low level dungeon - farmed tons of chests including about 10 ornate. That did not seem to work...

But it was fun.

People are getting them, they just seem fairly rare.

Sound that time wise you are better off just doing shard instances to get them then trying to farm them from regular mobs.

So wooo *twiddles finger*

I was hoping this would be a valid way to get some void shards. But so far It's just a colossal waste of effort SMILEY Disappointing :/

Yeah, after two 30 minute shard runs and a botched DD run, netting 6 shards total, taking 2 hours.

Two hours farming mobs in Moors = 0 shards.

Yeah, this event is dumb.

I was pulling for over an hour in the Moors, and got nothing.  Unless they change it, it's a waste of my time.

Just had my first chest. Three boxing in Sanctuary of the Scaleborn. Had a chst drop off a Scaleborn Reaver. Each toon got a void shard.  However had been there for two hours plus done over an hour in Court of Inovation.  Looks like the drops are extremly rare.

I ended up playing for about 5 hours tonight (mind you, not consistant fighting since I was also running around turning in/getting quests) out in Kunzar and I got one shard. It is definitely the LoN promo drop rate, which isn't very fun since shards are not tradeable like LoN cards are.

Boosting the rate some would be awesome, but I doubt it'll happen. Ah well, was nice in theory.

It's sad imo, this was an awsome idea that could have been really cool, but failed to deliver. Would have been VERY nice to be able to just kill stuff for shards instead of running instances that I've run so many times they make my eyes bleed.

I played till 1 am last night - then have been logged on for hour this morning. That around 12 hours of gameplay 85% killing mobs.

Shard count 0

THis was horrid. They should have never announced this. Sometimes it feels the devs do this out of spite. It seems they have an us agenst them attitude.

LIke they got together and said hey lets add this and announce it our boss will think we are really trying to help bond ties with the community. Then they make the drop so stupid rare and laugh all the way home about those loser gamers.

Now I dont think thats all of them, I mean I could never imagin Kander being that way. But without nameing names I am sure everyones knows who they could see like that...its so sad. Everquest could have been so much bigger and better then anythhing out. I just feel so sad from let down after let down me and my signifficant other have been playing eq/eq2 since 2000.

Maybe its just time we grew up and left games behind. We are so tired of disappointment.

This is my impression.  I spent about an hour and forty-five minutes this morning mass-killing in Darklight Wood, and got one void shard.  I got probably twenty or so regular chests in that time period.  At this point, I'm going to say that it's entirely more time-efficient to just do shard instances.  You've dropped the ball, SOE.  Again.

Hours spent killing on my L80 Paladin going from City of Mist, definite non-trivial mobs there to Sebilis as we helped a guildee get her Ranger epic furthered.  Definitely non-trivial mobs in Seb around the hidden library, blue to white to yellow, mostly double and triple ups.

Hours spent on my L18 roaming Antonica, killing white and yellow mobs, definitely non trivial, as I ran quests from Windstalker Village.  Killing the mobs in Shattered Vale.  Running thru Black Burrow, killed yellow heroics down in the blightfang area, killed the double ups in the brewery, on up to the oracles.  Yellow to white to blue to green, all heroic tagged, single to double to triple ups.

Nothing.

Not one shard.

Grats to those who were lucky enough to find shards.

I have to agree, it's rather a non-event event...the hype gives the impression that the shards will be far more common than they truly are.

"...boosted void shards..."

Right.

Yeah, this is a rather bitter post, but it's "oo lookie lookie /point" only to find empty goodie bags.

IMHO, definite Trick without the Treat.

I know, the weekend's not over yet...but given how today went, where I played for hours, I can't say that I expect anything to change come Monday when the "event" is done.

When this was announced, and then I got the email hyping it too, I couldn't help but think this was going to be alot like LON card drops in frequency, and it sounds like that is probably the same drop rate they have been given.  It's unfortunate, because If I go run a quick instance I can get 2 shards in 30 minutes or less.

I hardly see what would be wrong with upping the drop rate to be equivilent to 2 an hour off random mobs.  Then people can spend this weekend doing other content and not worrying about needing to run TSO instances to get shards.

What do you say?  Someone want to drive into the office and make this event a little more in the spirit of halloween?  If my kids were getting 1 piece of candy every 250 houses they trick or treated, they'd go home and do something else.

For this event to be a success, the frequency of void shard chest drops, on average, should be the same as the average time needed to complete a solo quest.

Look at the target audience for this event, casual players.

Look at the number of void shards needed to get even a single nice item, lots. One void shard is not really good for much.

Look at how much longer until the void shards are going to be irrelevant, four months or so, correct? With the release of the next major expansion, void shards will be obsolete, along with what was purchased with them. Even gaining 100 void shards, or more, through this event would not imbalance the game at this point; it seems gaining even one void shard, by the target audience, through this event requires quite a bit of luck.

What the community needs is an apology from the game's producer, the drop rate raised to be comparable to the time needed complete an average solo quest, and the void shard weekend duplicated next weekend.

An apology?  An apology requires acknowledging you were wrong.  Anyone who plays this game knows that isn't ever going to happen on anything done in this game world. If we are going to ask for an apology, this doesn't even make the top 25 on the list.

They will stonewall it as usual. They've been perfecting that technique since 1999.

I guess ill repost this here cuz i hope devs read this and pass on the info .. about this event, and the headless horsman.

JUST like the Headless horseman event .. the void shard bonus is ridiculous.

First off the Headless horseman should have NOT been a Contested mob .. as only 1 or 2 guilds per server have camped him constant.. .leaving most ppl  never a chance to enjoy the event.  That sucks.

The void shard thing is a joke and a half.  I got approx. 25 to 30 boxes yesterday in Kunzar and kylong .. AND NOT ONE Void shard so dont kid yourself.. these are as rare as a T8 mahogany or silicate loam.

WHICH Is also a big beef to myself and many others .. the rate of spawn on those need to be increased.. ITs Agonizing to work for 2 weeks and not get one. ..

Alot of people say soe is driving us away.. well the only thing that keeps me in this game is housing. IF wow or any other game had the kind of housing eq2 does id be gone, just cuz the way the events are run.  While some are cool or fun.. they last maybe 15 min for you to finish and the ones with the REALLY good prizes they make contested???????? !!!!!!

There isnt any games out on horizon really close to opening worth anything. Only thing i can look toward is star trek but no great fantasy games ... If wow gets housing id go back there. But if it doesnt never play wow again.

I find alot to do in eq2 but i am many days so disappointed in events. I hope they change how events are developed.
