I am trying to get my husband to start playing EQ2, and as such,  I am trying to buy a decent laptop for $800 or less that will run EQ2.  Any suggestions?  Any of the online stores will work..

This is one we were playing around with,  but not sure.  Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.   Price is $724.00

First I thought you were offering a trade....

With that said, check out some of the deals on Newegg.com, our friend just purchased a rather nice Intel Duo/Toshiba system for just $399.

They have some rather nice deals including one with a 17" display for under $700!

Thanks for the info....the newegg puter looks great...no problems playing EQ2 with that graphics card? (the only reason I am paranoid with graphics cards is that the computer he has would not play EQ2 because the graphics card was not up to par)...at least that's the message I got when it said "this computer will not support EQ2 because the texture detail is too low.

That's a pretty good deal!

The only few problems I see in that spec are the HDD RPM (5400 is a bit slow), and the relatively low-powered video card. There's a fairly reliable laptop website which gives a mobile GPU hierarchy list, www.notebookcheck.net. If you scroll through the list, you'll notice that the Mobility HD4330 you're considering is a 'Class 3' GPU. It's capable of running EQ2 but there are some really good deals right now like this one I see over at NewEgg, MSI GX630-028US $749.99+Shipping, which has some really good specs as well. Also has an 'automatic' overclock button which supposedly works surpringly well, very stable if there's a cooling pad under the computer. That 9600M GT is a very capable graphics card, and the 15.4" inch screen means there won't be that much of a power drain if/when you decide to use it away from an outlet.

Just my 2 cents.

Be very careful with video card.  Laptops can be tricky and with the wrong card you may not be able to run anything.

Greetings,

Please remember when purchasing a laptop that we can't test all laptops with the game so we can't guarantee compatibility.  The main issue with laptops is the lack of a graphics card in favor of an integrated graphics chip.  Many laptops can still play the game, you'll just need to pay special attention to the graphics chip.

EDIT:  I also merged your 2 threads

Thanks for the responses so far guys.  Here are the 3 or so that we have narrowed down... Which do you think is the best choice?

1.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16834152108

2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16834152073

3.  This is another Dell :    $824.00

The MSI's will do well,  the more raw MHZ you can get the better.  Here is the real determining factor when buying a laptop for eq2.

GPU/VPUATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
Video Memory512MB DDR3 VRAM
Graphic TypeDedicated Card

See where it says Graphic Type Dedicated Card?  That means it's a graphics card with dedicated memory and it's not trying to share the system ram (which is terrible for gaming).

Here is a link to a website dedicated to laptops (I pre-selected the MSI section for you) and I am sure the 2 MSI models will be compared under there.  You can also get a feel for how people feel about them.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/for...play.php?f=1015

Personally I went with this one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16834152103

Which is slated to be delivered today,  the one bad review on it if you read through the MSI forums section was someone who received one running hot and voided his warrenty,  re-thermal pasted the CPU/GPU and then tried to send it in for a warrenty repair.

The other thing for you to notice is with that dell it has only 256 megs of video memory which in a MMO can get chewed through quickly depending on your settings.  512meg is more "future proof"

I'd still advise to go for the MSI GX-630-028US, if only for the fact that the laptop Nvidia cards are generally more mature when it comes to the drivers. Yes, I might be a bit biased when it comes to the laptop GPUs since I've usually used nvidia ones but I've seen some ATI ones that do have initial driver stability issues. Although the HD4670 seems a tad stronger than the 9600M GT, it's really up to you. Similar specs make the decision a bit harder, I guess. Both are good laptops for the price range and you can't go wrong with either.

That's really strange that the core 2 duo has a ati and the AMD has a nvidia...

I like Nvidia better too but I hate AMDs.

Yep, so do I. Although I used the AMD cpus back then, but once the Core 2 Duo series came out there is no way I would go AMD over Intel. Don't know why some laptop makers mix the AMDs and the Nvidias but it seems to keep their price low when compared to 'pure' Nvidia/Intel systems. And who doesn't like lower prices?

Thanks so much for the responses, guys!!!   We are going to go with the MSI  GX630-028US.

I knew you all would come through for us....I  have been playing EQ1/EQ2 since November, 1999, and the EQ community has always been fantastic!!

Thanks everyone for the fantastic recommendations!!  We went with the MSI GX630-028US, and after almost a month,  it is better than we expected!!  It plays EQ2 flawlessly

These are the specs if anyone is interested.

It wasn't my intention to spam  "my favorite link" website lol.  This link was actually posted by someone in response to my original post, and I was just excited to let you know that I went with that recommendation.  I simply added the link because I was too lazy to copy the specs down.  Also, FYI,  I didn't even buy it from that particulat "favorite link".

I think you misunderstood,  the TSR was basically saying.  Wow that's a good laptop at a good price for eq2 gaming,  I'm going to add this to my favorites so I can remember this is the one I want to purchase when the time comes.

Personally I splurged a few weeks back for a

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16834152103

and it dual boxes eq2 very nice.  I recommend if you have access to a vista x64 sp1 dvd to use that to re-install the OS using the key on the bottom of the PC (it works for x32 or x64) to take full advantage of all the ram.  But the MSI laptop really is a nice piece of hardware.

Oh wow, very nice as well. If I may ask, how long can that system handle dual-boxing EQ2 just on it's battery alone? It seems like that would be a very quick drain.

Glendora: I meant no offense! I'm actually glad you showed me a decent system within a price range I can go with, as I've been putting off a laptop purchase for some time.

Laptops have batteries?  Honestly you can't really dual box well without dual monitors so you can watch what the other char is doing (they get silly and stuck sometimes) oh and sorry to sidejack the thread.  Here are the forums I researched MSI laptops on before I bought one.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/for...play.php?f=1015

They first came to eye in a PC Gamer review on the lowest end gaming model with great overall marks so I took a look deeper into the company and hardware hence my suggestion and forking out a lot for one of there top models.  Those forums have tips for installing newer video card drivers.  Heat wasn't a problem either with 78f ambient temp dual boxing gets the vid card to 68c which is fully acceptable for a desktop never mind a laptop.

Josie that laptop should give years of good service,  mine has been really fast and not a single crash even after hours of gaming.

I like those odds! I was somewhat worried when, during a span of 2 years, all my buddies had purchased particular laptops and every last one of them ended up becoming bricks for varying reasons.

Granted, some of them were very low-end and others weren't handled properly. I've fixed my share of desktop systems,  But doing laptop surgery is a whole other story.

Hi Ken,  I play EQ2 exclusively with the computer plugged in ( got for my husband, lol,  but I have hijacked it often now to play eq2), so I am not sure how long the battery lasts.  I have dual boxed it while plugged in, and I have to say that I don't even notice there are 2 accounts running at the same time.  It is extremely smooth!!
