I was running writs today taking my time and doing them very slowly as I was trying to do a couple things at once. I lead with vampire bats on these mobs because I'm just lazy and cast dots and move on (only writ mobs after all). On close inspection of the spell (vampire bats) landing on the mob I noted that I'm hitting for 1k-1.2k when the description of the spell clearly says 179-268 peircing damage.I then thought to myself how is that even possible? Maybe I'm seeing another dot proc or something that I'm not looking at, so I began only casting that spell and sure enough every time it would hit for 1k-1.2k with a normal, 179-268, dot afterwards. After some testing I found that takeing off 400 spell damage the spell damage droped by 400. Perhapes I'm understanding this wrong but isn't spell damage on a particualar spell only suppose to increase it so much, so small spells don't get an 800 spell damage increase (which is how much +spell damage I have one, roughly)? If I'm wrong, then doesn't spell damage usually add to the spell and the increase is clearly visable when examining the spell?I'm sure I'm fairly slow and this has been this way for a while, but not sure it should be.

Spell damage for Vampire Bats does not show up in the tooltip. However it affects the spell perfectly fine.

I know it affects the spell, I personally think it affects it to much. There is no way that I should be hitting 1k-1.2k on a spell that is suppose to do less then 300 ever 4 seconds. I was fairly sure that the cap on +spell damage and the like was half (maybe the whole thing) of what the spells current damage is. I.E. 300 point damage spell would allow a 150 increase from +spell damage bonuses (possible 300 if it's actually just double the current damage).

It is just on the initial attack and not on the rest of the procs bud.

You are not understanding how spell damage adds.

With a nuke, it's like you think it is.  Half the base damage.  However, with a DoT, you have to add.

With a DoT that does say 50 - 100 per tick for 5 ticks, the maximum spell damage is NOT 50.  It's 250.  You have to add the value of every tick to get the FULL amount of damage the spell does.  The +damage is then frontloaded to the first tick of the DoT, with subsequent ticks being at their normal amounts.  So, your first tick would hit for 175 - 350, with subsequent ticks at 50-100.

When a mob gets good and debuffed, it's not uncommon for the your spells to hit for double what an inspect shows - all +damage aside.

I  had just equiped a third  item in a set and the bats  from vampire bats were attacking me .

What was happening was the added self healing from vampire bats was healing but coded as an attack.

This was fixed a patch  or so ago but was funny to see.
