So if you were to start off on kunark, is there no way to get off the island without lvling up past like... lvl 20?

I'm not sure why you'd want to leave early, since the quest gear available there is much better than gear from elsewhere. Having said that though, I did do some Darklight Woods quests in my mid-teens to get more AA and to get the skelly and werewolf L&L quests. Just take the carpet from the Gorowyn docks to Sinking Sands and then to Darklight Woods (make sure you right click for the carpet menu). Use the same method to get back again, or to Freeport.

*Edit* To clarify, I stayed in TD until about 13 or 14, then went to DW and did the quests from the Faire (where the carpet lands), as well as the werewolf L&L and the Neriak portal quest, then back and forth a bit to get everything in both areas before I out levelled anything. At 21 or 22 I moved on to BB.

As the above poster said. you can also use same carpet to go to Freeport / Commonlands to quest. Orc Lore book is to find in Commonlands on Crossroads behind a shield inside tower.
