Character Selection

I purchased the game at release and cancelled the account a week later (slow computer and WoW ran on it). Today, I just re-installed the original EQII and purchased 1 month of play. Unfortunately, I am unable to get a new character creation screen to show. All that I see is "Character Select Unavailable". I tried running the main application but get "login server unavailalbe". I have been playing the trial version the last 2 days so I know my machine works with the servers. Any suggestions bufore I give up and head back to WoW? There is no "Play" button on the opening screen, just the update info and chat, my account, etc. selections. My Trial version toon is showing but I am unable to play him.
