I wrote about it in my blog but the patch note for live update 32 seem to hint at a real web browser. They say you won't have to open an external browser to use the Knowledge base, and since the Knowledge base uses PHP, it seem to imply (at lest to me) that they are adding a web browser that is capable of using PHP. Which also implys it can do basic html (images, tables colors, links). Which would include almost all website (minus movies, and flash).

When you open a page which uses PHP, the server executes the PHP code and sends the resulting HTML page (which does not contain PHP code anymore) to the browser. An example for client-side processing would be JavaScript, which is executed in your browser. |

If you ever try and use the web browser it kinda sucks. You have to format your code perfectly or it cant render it. I hope with LU32 that the web browser gets a overhaul and maybe they even use a already working rendering engine to display the pages... maybe an open source one like Mozilla.

Yeah, the current browser is virtually useless except for the occasional checking up on your dkp or something like that which didn't require a whole lot. This new browser sounds like a great idea, hope it works like what is being described. There's endless possibilities with a fully functional in-game browser.

I'm confused. When I type /petition on the test server, it still spawns an external web browser.

Yes, EQ2 is gaining a real web browser in GU32. It's supposed to display when you do /petition, but we brought the test server up in the old customer service mode. It's basically Firefox 1.5 with plugins disabled (so no flash or quicktime). You can display a general browser with: /show_window MainHUD.Browser If you're a UI moder you can basically drop a web page anywhere now, there is actually no game code at all that corresponds to MainHUD.Browser, it's completely driven by UI script. Not that I recommend studding your UI with web pages, they cost a lot to render.

We've got a patch up that fixes the browser not rendering. Coming in the next build for test server is /browser, which will pop up the browser and optionally tell it what URL to load. You can use this with macros to make bookmarks like this: /browser forums.station.sony.com/eq2

Edit: this was originally posted from within the game =) Unfortunately I wasn't able to enter any text. Besides that it's truely amazing

I have no idea at all about this sort of thing, but is there any chance one of you clever UI modders would be able to use this to make an EQ2 version of /gems?

Maybe if they could allow for flash then it would be easy.

Of course any flash things don't show up, and for some reason you can't type in the text window here in the eq2 forums. I was able to post fine on the eq2interface forums from within the game browser. I'm sure it's a javascript issue, maybe with tinyMCE. Any way, here's a picture: |

HMMM.. Now.. is there any chance for a wishlist ability to load a webpage on login? I see a HUGE solution to our casual guild event organization if we can autoload a guild calendar or something in HTML or PHP.

Yes, you can view guild web pages and calendars easily. I noticed that the command /cl_homepage doesn't seem to work anymore when you put it in your eq2.ini file. Would it be possible to get that command back? I also noticed that browser.cache.disk.enable and browser.cache.memory.enable are both turned off in the about:config page. This causes every image to download on every page. Is there a reason there isn't any browser caching? Othesus - Dirge - Lucan DLere Vaspar - Fury - Lucan DLere

Agreed, at least the memory cache should be enabled otherwise browsing is just painful. But I'm very happy to get this browser (and that it is so easily accessible to modders), thanks for that!

![]() Gecko engine? Why don't you put some more CPU consuming and RAM draining products inside, since EQ2 is using just 5 mb's of ram and does not eat CPU at all? Sarcasm aside, seriously, Gecko (and especially <2.0) is the most turtle-speed and RAM consuming browser ever. Now let's face the facts. As long as you are not preparing to release Everquest II for Linux based kernels, you are putting completely alien product for Windows that uses "emulator" to run on Windows and more importantly, much more security bugs than ever (which is already stated by Mozilla itself and encouraged to move 2.0.0.1 at least) Now please, be reasonable again and don't punish people who waiting for this to resource draining and use their default browser. Some smart(!) people already been fooled by Mozilla's misadvertisements. And good point on not enabling objects, also another point would be disabling scripting and activex for maximum security. There are a lot of dummies who could blame SOE for webpages they browse.

Puhlease, I guess you would rather they use IE? I would use Firefox 1.5 over any version of IE including 7. I wont touch any version of IE at all.
