ok. So I am new to the Ranger class. I am wondering what I am doing wrong. I have spent 80-85% of my 25 levels in melee combat. I seem to do more damage in melee then I do in ranged? Is this picture wrong? LOL! I am a Ranger...

I dont want flamed just some constructive critisism! Thanks!

U guys are great!

Well assuming your taking solo mobs I can only say to make sure to use cheap shot so you can back up to hit with your bow. However, for soloing the only time you will get to use your bow is at the beginning of a fight and when you stun it (unless your trying to kite), the rest will be done by melee. Unfortunately, due to the combat update, alot fo the knowledge base from high level players has been removed. Many of us high level players have no idea what its like to be a new Ranger post LU 13. So hopefully someone who has done those levels recently can give you more information.

At higher lvls you will be using your bow 95% of the time. as for now you just dont have that many bow attacks.

Just a question for the original poster....are you using poisions?  I was lvl 23 ranger before someone clued me into the need to always have a poision active.  Then my bow attacks were doing considerable more damage due to the poision procs.  By the time the mob even gets to me its almost dead from my ranged attack.

I have a level 28 ranger, and I had the same experience as you up to the mid 20s. Over the next few levels though, you'll be getting several hard-hitting bow attacks, and by level 28/29 you'll be able to use your bow for at least half of your damage (or more). It's a pretty big shift over only a couple of levels, but it's a lot of fun when you can chain 4 big shots together (with poison and other procs) and start dropping stuff from range when you're in a group.

As the above posters have said, you're just about to start getting combat arts that let you fight like a ranger. Not only will you start getting new bow combat arts, but through the levels many of your existing attacks will be replaced with long-range versions.  I'd say the turning point is probably level 28, when you get Triple Shot. For a few levels, you'll probably have to dance in and out of melee range, as your timers come up.  Move into melee range, perform a few melee attacks, back off, perform a few ranged attacks, repeat.  At level 40, I find I stand at bow range most of the time. For solo fights, you'll probably try to attack at maximum range and get off lots of ranged CA's while the mobs charge you.  Depending on how tough the mob is, he may never reach you.  If he does, you'll throw a few up-close CA's on him, maybe do a heroic oportunity.  Then you'll hit Cheap Shot to stun him, take a few steps back, and launch another volly of Triple Shot (or whatever). By the way - use a longbow.  The mechanics of procs make it so that your poison is *much* more likely to go off on an attack - normal or CA - with a high-delay weapon.  When you're relying on attacks like Open Shot and Triple Shot, those extra procs make a big difference.

ok, I've had a pally main for a long while and after seeing how far rangers have come, I felt like making one just recently, so I know how you feel. I felt like I wasn't using my bow enough, but after looking at our upcoming skills and reading this forum, it'll get much better. right now if i have a group I just wait a bit, then click on steady aim (the 30sec buff) and rip off Trickshot (for aggro control), Wounding Arrow (debuff shot), Back Shot (high dmg), and then Open Shot, all in that order. You can do it all in the 30secs and by now you'll have had  a lot of procs go off and the mob will be fairly weak. Just finish him off with some melee moves and as you lvl it seems as it will get better (next lvl is hidden shot).

Also, don't use store bought poisons. Get crafted Legendary poisons, there's no substitute. If you have an Alchemist in your guild, become his (or her) best friend. Otherwise find another alchemist who'll be your source of poisons.
