When did you play your very first ranger?

Many of us have commented at one point or another that we tend to roll rangers in whatever fantasy RPG we're playing. I'm curious - where / when did you create your first ranger ever? And what other games have you played where you rolled your more notable ranger characters?

The first for me was in Dungeons & Dragons, but I don't remember which ruleset / edition. They weren't in Basic, were they? I had several rangers over the years, none of them got terribly uber (we didn't do PnP terribly regularly), but one did marry a princess who turned out to be a silver dragon. Go figure.

Some of my more notable ranger characters in video games... hmm, I had a good one in Baldur's Gate, he was fun. Oh, and my main Neverwinter Nights character was Jerridan Crissaegrim, straight ranger for 20 levels before I multi-classed into something to augment his rangerriffic skills. I also have a ranger in Guild Wars, Jaerin Crissaegrim (descendent of Jerridan) who is still kind of a lowbie but was maxed out in beta. I actually had a longbow in beta that was one of the best in the game, courtesy of my g/f at the time. Even in the current live game, I've yet to see one that was better. Good thing I got a screenshot of it before the beta ended. SMILEY

Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point. Share your ranger stories and keep me entertained SMILEY

I first played a Ranger with basic D&D. I think that was around 1980 for me. Always have been a ranger and always will be. I played Ranger throughout the Baldur's Gate series and Icewind Dale (and the expansions). I played a Ranger in NWN and I am sure I will play a Ranger in NWN2 when it comes out. Speaking of that, who is excited for that to come out in the summer of 2006. I feel like sometiumes I am just biding my time until that comes out.

My favorite Ranger was in NWN. I did a Ranger/Rogue/Shadowdancer. What an awesome combo. With the overpowering skill of Hide In Plain Sight I was unstoppable...hehe. That was probably some of the most fun I had with a Ranger.

In MMOPGs my first Ranger was in Guild Wars. His name is Thomas de Hookton and i play a lot with him before leave GW.

In off-line games my first Ranger was in NeverWinter Nights.

Like most of us I made my first D&D guy a ranger/fighter type. Named Rick Jagg ( Don't ask I was like 9) Which has translated into Jagg and now Jaggud *Dayum you SOE not letting me have my Jagg title*. I then went on to UO making the same type of Character, drifting into EQ where I made my first full blown Ranger. Ahhh and the magic that i could barely see was now fully infront of my face.

I have had alts, but I rarely play them. I always tend to make a Ranger no matter what game I play. I think I got a Ranger Voodoo curse cast on me or something, cuz I can't think of another class I would truely be happy ( or as happy) with.

Always thought 1st edition D&D had only fighter, Mage, Cleric, Thief. I could be wrong.

D&D 2nd edition was my first PnP Ranger.

AC2 was my first MMO Ranger.

Yeah, I'll definitely continue to play rangers in future games, but I'm proud that Kaeros has earned his place in my own Ranger Hall of Fame. In fact, he may win top honors, just b/c I've put so much time into him and had such a good time creating a story and concept behind him. And through him I've become very involved in the ranger community, which continues to make this game great for me. SMILEY

My second D&D character ever was a ranger named Arathorn. I'm sure you'll never guess what inspired that name! :p But, this was in late '79, (IIRC) and I was only seven years old. Gimme a break!

Strangely enough, my current character name (Tarryn) was actually born as an outlaw in Star Wars RPG in the late 80s. Obviously not a ranger, but I played him like a ranger. SMILEY So, it wasn't much of a stretch to make him as a ranger in the fantasy MUDs I played in college in the early 90s.

Thereafter, Tarryn was born in EQ1 in 2000...and has been catting around in dozens of MMOs ever since...

I would have stuck with Arathorn, but once I'd developed some creative sense I realized I should use a name that wasn't a direct ripoff from a book... SMILEY

My first ranger type was born in Ultima Online, and moved to EQ where he actually had a ranger title. After that it came DAoC and a few archer type classes and finally back to EQ2, where I'm still having a lot of fun with him.

My first ranger was in World of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, the spin-off from the wargaming leviathan. Embarrassingly I can't remember his name. I loved the relative simplicity of the ruleset combined with the relatively sophisticated world in which the game was set. Two of my EQ2 alts still have names I used way back when (though race and class have changed for one of them).

My first MMORPG ranger was Keredh in Everquest, back in 2000/1. He's still sitting on a server at 63 and I take a nostalgic look every other month or so. He was re-rolled as my main in EQ2 beta and now live in EQ2. I googled the name the other day and chuckled to see there are some imposters out there now - one of whom at least told me he was nicking the name (ex-guildy from EQ1 days, but didn't believe him at the time!). The others are probably coincidence.

My first Ranger was in Neverwinter. Loved it when they added the expansion with Prestige classes. Ranger with Shadow Dancer's Hide in Plain Sight and a little Rogue for Sneak Attacks simply rocks. Disengage from a fight and *blink* you are gone only to nail them with extra damage from a Sneak Attack. And unlike our beloved class in this game, you could do that with multiple mobs on you. :smileyvery-happy:

Yeah, I multi-classed Jerridan in NWN too, once they added Prestige classes... I know he picked up some rogue levels, but I can't remember what I did with the third class. It wasn't Shadowdancer, tho...hmm.. maybe Weapon Master? LOL

Anyway, yeah, that was a LOT of fun for a while. It's too bad they turned NWN into a single-player game. SMILEY

I don't think I ever PnPed a ranger... but.. I did play one for 2 years in EQ1, Caillou on FV. But.... it was for all the negative reasons that I left EQ1 that I didn't start up with a ranger here. I jsut couldn't go back... But... I did create a ranger-to-be a while back to test out poisons myself and because I wanted to see if it would be possible to play a ranger without raising Caillou's ghost. She's dead, she's buried, she's gone... though some of her bad habits remain *laugh*. I do like the EQ2 ranger heaps better than the EQ1, even starting from scout. In EQ1, I was a bow ranger nearly from the first, using it not jsut for pulling, even before I got the bracer and then the AA. So... it warms my heart immensely that bow damage even in the lower tiers in EQ2 is so worthwhile. I absolutely love how stuff falls over while it's running at me with all sorts of arrows sticking out of it. It's a real close second to the joy in seeing an elephant simply explode with fire and ice shards all over *impish grin*.

My very first Ranger I made for AD&D 2nd Edition, you know back when you had to like all 14's or better just to be one. It was the second character I ever made (my first was a cleric bleh) and his name was guess what....well it wasn't Rhanin it was actually Evric(also seen as Everick sometimes) one of my other stock names that I seem to use in a lot games I play. Anyways I never really got to play as that ranger and I guess I prolly made a few more as time went by. I had a couple that I had made in 3rd Edition that I never really got to play and I was going to make a Ranger for EQ1 but my friend already had one. I'd guess you could say my very first real ranger character was Rhanin Falconscry that I created for Neverwinter Nights. Since then I have used the name Rhanin just about any time I've made either a Ranger or a Vah'shir/Kerran type character. I finally settled about the surname/title Gladestalker semi named after Gailstrider from my EQ1 Druid. Basically I almost always either play Ranger, Druid, Shadowknight, or Berserker/Barbarian classes anymore. For instance when playing Icewind Dale II instead of having your typical Fighter, Thief, Mage, Cleric, misc, and misc group I had Ranger for main fighter, Barbarian for 2ndary fighter/dps, Druid, Cleric(didn't want to but I had to have the [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] Ressurect spells), Bard, and Sorceress. The D&D Sorcerer character type is one of my favorites as well I like them quite a bit more than Wizards though Wizards are still bad [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn].

I'll tell you what my first ranger was even if it wasnt an adult game.

It was when I was about 5 years old playing in the woods in nothern part of sweden, great fun tracking animals in the snow, discovering the lands and whatever.

Anyway thats what I tell kids that are bored. Go play ninja or whatever in the woods and youll have a great time alone or with others;P

Weird huh, oh btw I was paladin too sometimes choping down bushes with my wooden sword my brother made for me SMILEY

Lol Sweden aye? Well to be perfectly honest I think the big reason why I seem to have gravitated towards the likes of Rangers and Druids had to do with childhood romps through the backwoods of Missouri. I still remember this awesome fort me and my older brother had, it was two gigantic oaks that had fallen over and overlapped each other perfectly over a hollow in the ground. There was a big clear area in the middle and a nook we dug back into the giant torn up root system of one of the oaks. Fortified on all sides by the tree's and their branches and it only had 3 sides of approach with the southern side being blocked by dense woods and a viscious rusted barbed wire old fence that would make Superman want a tetnis shot. I remember defending it with a bow I made of a stick and a shoe string with pulled up long straight weed thingies for arrows. Hehe ah the good times. I honestly still hate going outside to this day unless there is a patch of trees or woods to be in or around.

D&D 1st Ed had only the basic classes...BUT.....There were additional books you could purchase that gave you expanded classes..>Which turned it into Advanced D&D 1st Ed.

I usually played a mix of 1st and 2nd Ed rules...One of my first characters was a Ranger. Never did anything but lob arrows...Always stayed out of the thick of things. Usually had him back behind the mages on horseback...Until I rolled a 1, and critical hit my horse in the back of it's head....I flew off the horse and into a tree...snapping the character's neck and never played another ranger again until Baldur's Gate. After that it was a set of Fighter/thief or Fighter/Mage (elves, of course) twins, D'Nala and D'Tran. D'Nala was the Fighter/Mage. Kicked much butt....

At first I almost cried, because I had been running that character for almost a year....Then the mental images came in on how it would have looked...

Charging into battle, taking a shot...just as the horse was jumping over a log....point blank full strength shot to the base of the skull. Horse collapses, I fly forward, getting intimate with a tree, headfirst....Wasn't wearing a helmet....Actually rolled the damage taken to me. At that speed it did so much damage that if it were real life, my head would have been where my stomach was....At that point everyone at the table laughed so hard that I'm sure several of us soiled our shorts.

Our DM was notorious for involved failure tables. Was one of his favorite things.. Had a chart for each weapon type, and used either 1d100 or 2d100 depending on how creative he felt like being...and had each number defining the severity. I think he rolled a 2 on that...A roll of one would have been that the horse took out at least one other party members....

Along the lines of RL experience steering you toward ranger - I was talking to a good friend the other night about stuff we used to read when we were kids. She'd mentioned a kid's story magazine she used to get, and I suddenly remembered one of the magazines I had a subscription to for years: Ranger Rick. Suddenly I thought whoah... RANGER Rick... and of course this was a magazine all about animals and plants and nature stuff.

Kinda got me thinking about how I was so interested in wildlife and wild places when I was young; still am, in fact, but I forgotten that those interests were a big part of that formative period of my life. This came up recently when we found a snake and I picked it up gently without hesitating, despite warnings that I'd get bitten (it wasn't poisonous and was far too small to bite, but I seemed to be the only one that knew that). Odd stuff, but all in a day's work for a longtime Ranger. SMILEY

Nice to go with your friend and meeting a poisonus snake and the friend allmost goes bezerk while yourself is sain enough to do the safe thing to stand still to calm both yourself and the snake then slowly move away SMILEY

The available classes in the original D&D were Fighter, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Dwarf, and Elf (which was basically a Ranger).

My first Ranger was a Wild Elf named Armach Kaganost in my buddy's Forgotten Realms campaign. I think I only got to 15th level with him before we stared a new campaign (in which I played a Dwarf Paladin named Balkor).

Gailstryd General Join Date: Jan 2005 Posts: 204	My very first Ranger I made for AD&D 2nd Edition, you know back when you had to like all 14's or better just to be one. It was the second character I ever made (my first was a cleric bleh) and his name was guess what....well it wasn't Rhanin it was actually Evric(also seen as Everick sometimes) one of my other stock names that I seem to use in a lot games I play. Anyways I never really got to play as that ranger and I guess I prolly made a few more as time went by. I had a couple that I had made in 3rd Edition that I never really got to play and I was going to make a Ranger for EQ1 but my friend already had one. I'd guess you could say my very first real ranger character was Rhanin Falconscry that I created for Neverwinter Nights. Since then I have used the name Rhanin just about any time I've made either a Ranger or a Vah'shir/Kerran type character. I finally settled about the surname/title Gladestalker semi named after Gailstrider from my EQ1 Druid. Basically I almost always either play Ranger, Druid, Shadowknight, or Berserker/Barbarian classes anymore. For instance when playing Icewind Dale II instead of having your typical Fighter, Thief, Mage, Cleric, misc, and misc group I had Ranger for main fighter, Barbarian for 2ndary fighter/dps, Druid, Cleric(didn't want to but I had to have the [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] Ressurect spells), Bard, and Sorceress. The D&D Sorcerer character type is one of my favorites as well I like them quite a bit more than Wizards though Wizards are still bad [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn].

It was when I was about 5 years old playing in the woods in nothern part of sweden, great fun tracking animals in the snow, discovering the lands and whatever. Anyway thats what I tell kids that are bored. Well to be perfectly honest I think the big reason why I seem to have gravitated towards the likes of Rangers and Druids had to do with childhood romps through the backwoods of Missouri. I still remember this awesome fort me and my older brother had, it was two gigantic oaks that had fallen over and overlapped each other perfectly over a hollow in the ground. There was a big clear area in the middle and a nook we dug back into the giant torn up root system of one of the oaks. Fortified on all sides by the tree's and their branches and it only had 3 sides of approach with the southern side being blocked by dense woods and a viscious rusted barbed wire old fence that would make Superman want a tetnis shot. I remember defending it with a bow I made of a stick and a shoe string with pulled up long straight weed thingies for arrows. Hehe ah the good times. I honestly still hate going outside to this day unless there is a patch of trees or woods to be in or around.

I usually played a mix of 1st and 2nd Ed rules...One of my first characters was a Ranger. Never did anything but lob arrows...Always stayed out of the thick of things. Usually had him back behind the mages on horseback...Until I rolled a 1, and critical hit my horse in the back of it's head....I flew off the horse and into a tree...snapping the character's neck and never played another ranger again until Baldur's Gate. After that it was a set of Fighter/thief or Fighter/Mage (elves, of course) twins, D'Nala and D'Tran. D'Nala was the Fighter/Mage. Charging into battle, taking a shot...just as the horse was jumping over a log....point blank full strength shot to the base of the skull. Horse collapses, I fly forward, getting intimate with a tree, headfirst....Wasn't wearing a helmet....Actually rolled the damage taken to me. At that speed it did so much damage that if it were real life, my head would have been where my stomach was....At that point everyone at the table laughed so hard that I'm sure several of us soiled our shorts. Our DM was notorious for involved failure tables. Was one of his favorite things.. Had a chart for each weapon type, and used either 1d100 or 2d100 depending on how creative he felt like being...and had each number defining the severity. The group wanted him to climb into a giant rat hole to look for treasure. He said no, got backslapped and died LOL. Jay General Join Date: Jan 2005 Posts: 2,137	Along the lines of RL experience steering you toward ranger - I was talking to a good friend the other night about stuff we used to read when we were kids. She'd mentioned a kid's story magazine she used to get, and I suddenly remembered one of the magazines I had a subscription to for years: Ranger Rick. Suddenly I thought whoah... RANGER Rick... and of course this was a magazine all about animals and plants and nature stuff. Kinda got me thinking about how I was so interested in wildlife and wild places when I was young; still am, in fact, but I forgotten that those interests were a big part of that formative period of my life. This came up recently when we found a snake and I picked it up gently without hesitating, despite warnings that I'd get bitten (it wasn't poisonous and was far too small to bite, but I seemed to be the only one that knew that). Odd stuff, but all in a day's work for a longtime Ranger. __________________

My first Ranger was a Wild Elf named Armach Kaganost in my buddy's Forgotten Realms campaign. I think I only got to 15th level with him before we stared a new campaign (in which I played a Dwarf Paladin named Balkor).
