YANQ (Yet Another Noob Question):

I apologize if this has been covered in the sticky FAQ, but all of the links there lead to the basic Sony "Oops, forum maintenance" page.

Just wondering what class would make for a decent duo with a Coercer (with possibility of a third for a trio).  I imagine that typically the best duo would be a dps/tank class + dps/healing class, but I'm wondering how a Coercer + Wizard combo would work out.  I'm thinking the mana regen from the Coercer would be a boon to both, as well as the crowd control possibilities (mezzes, roots, charms) against groups of mobs.  Add in some serious direct damage and I figure this combo could mow down mobs pretty quick.

Any thoughts?  Chances are my wife (the Wizard) wouldn't be willing to change her class, and we're just starting out, so if the general concensus is "No, terrible duo!!!" then I'll be looking for something else. SMILEY

 Thanks in advance!

IMO a Coercer and Necro would be very strong. Mezz will allow you to take on group encounters easily, and chain stuns will reduce the damage the Necro Tank pet will take against tough mobs or heroics, which should allow the Necro to keep the pet up much more easily. Necro's can also get a transfer life to provide limited healing, FD and Rez eventually for wipes, fear and root for Charm breaks, etc. I think the 2 classes would complement each other very very well.

A Coercer would probably do well with any good Solo class, however. Root/Nuke would be cake for a Sorcerer with a Coercer along, for example.

It will be a good quick duo.  The Coercer root is much better than the Wizzy root (faster cast time as well as like 3x less chance to break).  That would be your foundation.  Let the Wizzy nuke while you keep the mob at bay. Just be careful with group encounters.  Get a good group mez upgrade and group stun upgrade until the wizzy hits 40 and gets group root, which still isn't that great. If you want to take a few more chances put 5 points into charm in the EoF tree and get an M1 charm.  Try to charm a caster if you can and you'll be doing some serious DPS.  You just have to stay on your toes without healing and without taunts. agressiv

Coercer and Wizzy would be a very solid duo.  The wizzy would just have to limit their damage to the DD nuke spells so if the root breaks you can mez and regain control of the mob.  Add in your caster pet of choice and you'd be fighting with two strong nukers.

I believe the coercer / wizard duo would work very well.  Personally, I two box a coercer and a warlock and the stuff I can take down shocks many people.  I didn't play this duo leveling up as they were both level 70 before I split them onto seperate accounts but I'll share my experiences.

Solo mobs are really just a joke for any duo.

Single heroic mobs (non-named) can just be chained stunned for the most part and they'll die before they get an opportunity to do anything.  At lower levels you won't have sonic boom or mind bend which are nice for keeping mobs at bay for long periods but this would still work pretty well.  If that doesn't work, you can do what I do against named mobs.

Single heroic named mobs I typically start by stacking all 3 roots on (2 warlock / 1 coercer).  I don't worry about refreshing the roots unless the named is immune to stun (which you won't hit until higher levels anyway), and when they all break I switch over to stuns.

For groups of mobs, the warlock would have an advantage over the wizard just because of the sheer power they have in AOE combat.

Couple of downsides to this combo is you get into trouble and one dies, you're basically stuck.  You have no way to rez (unless you become a tinkerer).  This might be one side of having a necro like someone mentioned as they still have great DPS but the added utility of feign death and rez.

If you're wife isn't wanting to change from a wizard, I hear many people recommending an illusionist for that duo.  Their buffs are slightly more caster friendly but I wouldn't say it's a necessity by any means.  Personally, I do fun stuff when I duo using charm, and losing that ability would make me have to relearn strategies.

Thanks for all the replies and advice!  It's good to hear that Coercer/Wizard is definitely a good duo, better than just "doable".  I'm certainly not looking to duo some serious high end content, but it's nice that playing won't be overly frustrating with this combo.

 Thanks again! SMILEY

I duo with a wizard quite a lot.  I basically use the wizard as a super pet.  I get the mob under control, mez, root, stun, whatever is needed and then keep it that way while the wizard burns the mob down.  It works very well.  SMILEY

IMO best BEST Coercer duo team is Coercer Illy.... Hands down. It is just such a broken combonation that its sickening. Sure the pr regens dont over lap but who cares. A illy at 70 can lock a mob down for 23 seconds if you time your stuns right with the illy you can keep a mob permenantly stunned w/o the care for root. Throw time compression on the coercer to beef up their casting speed AND recast speed. Both can easily handle mezing. Both can have pets you charm illy's pet casts which also stuns and roots. Throw illusory arms on the coercer pet. Throw dps buff on coercer pet have the coercer pet be a tank. Heck could throw haste on it also. But just over all its an unfair combo if put together. AND safe

IMO best BEST Coercer duo team is Coercer Illy.... Hands down. In terms of flexibility, I think Coercer-Illy is fantastic. However if you want to kill named NPCs quickly methinks that duoing with a wiz would be faster.  Wizard DPS is 2-3 times that of a coercer. Wiz has stifle, stun, mez,  root & group-root too. And the best thing is if you have enough wiz AA, your wiz can manaburn (nuke up to 50% of the HP of a mob) + coercer channel to restore the lost mana immediately FTW.

Ever since ive started playing my coercer I've been duoing with a warlock pretty much every day. It's been pretty handy. I think being with a wizard would be a little better, but coercer/warlock go very well together, too. I can keep her alive and she drops mobs very easily. We also raid/group together and she receives all my hate debuffs, which saves a few deaths from aggro. While not the perfect team, we work very well together. I imagine coercers go with almost any offensive mage class quite well.

The same question was asked on the Wizard boards about a month ago for duo classes. I play coercer and wizard duo and its just unstoppable. Taking down heroic lvl 74 nameds in castle mistmoore is no problem (made 30 plat from 2 drops). Its very simple. Mez with wizard ghetto mez and coercer mez, catalyst and then ice nova, throw a few stuns in, hit manaburn then channel and if its not dead its about to be. Manaburn is unresistable so getting power back instantly after is very useful.
