In general, player characters are more powerful (and more interesting) then the avatars. Each avatar has an auto-attack and 4 arts. Depending on the avatar 1-3 of the arts are mostly useless. If you really want to play an avatar the Duhjalm Sentinel is one of the sturdier ones. It is dropped from various giants around Norrath
