I'd say, get the mage master and give it a shot. You will know inside of 5 kills whether you want to use it to solo or not, would probably take you less time than it does to read through this thread

Another +1 on this. Mage pet is a MONSTER in DOV; just remember to know how to summon him when he tries to pull big groups away from hitting you, or he'll get out of healing range.
