Mail isn't being "borked". Knowing a little about server structures, it is more than likely that the mail server is completely seperate from the other servers, and probably controls mail for multiple if not all the actual game servers. This is also more than likely for chat as well, which is why you have the option of cross server chat and mail. So even though they are only merging 2 or 4 game servers, the mail and chat servers also need to come down.
And that would be totally correct.. because the "domain" names of the leaving servers need to be changed to the names of the final servers. All this would need to drop while the upgrades are happening.
