So...because some people are crazy and are so obsessed with a game they will spend money on something they won't use (the booster packs) just to have a chance to get an item for a MAKE BELIEVE CHARACTER...Sony is the big bad?  You buy the packs to play the card game.  The in game loot items are just an extra "perk" to help blend the games together.  Just because some people have more money than sense doesn't mean Sony is masterminding some humongous plot.  As a side note -- the people that would spend hundreds of dollars on booster packs but have no intention of playing the card game are the same type of people that would buy money from gold sellers.  They don't see an issue with being incapable of playing a game naturally so they throw real life cash at it to offset their lack of skill.
